Principally recorded live at The Knitting Factory, New York, New York on October 21, 1998.
Frigg, the German group led by composer/guitarist Bert Wrede, is named after a Norse goddess who was worshipped by both northern and southern Germanic barbarian traditions. Wrede is an experimentalist devoted to the avant-garde and European music traditions. There is little free improvisation on Brecht, which, contrary to what one might think after reading the title, is not an album of Bertolt Brecht's songs. Therefore, it is not a tribute album. Instead, Wrede claims that Frigg's inspiration on the album is equal parts Tom Waits' Black Rider, Kurt Weill's Seven Deadly Sins, and the Willem Breuker Kollektief playing film music. Using avant-vocal wizard Phil Minton adds not only pathos but also an essential dash of wry humor to the proceedings in honor of its namesake. Other guests include guitarist and co-producer Elliott Sharp and stunning vocalist Meira Asher, who sounds like Marianne Faithfull before the cigarettes and decadence turned her voice into a glorious ghost of one. Meira adds the "devil- may-care" attitude so essential to Brecht's spirit, particularly in the political cabaret songs. But it's Frigg itself who is the shining light here. The band's willingness to stretch itself to the breaking point is felt over and over again in these proceedings; breaching the worlds of German folk and cabaret music and '60s vanguard jazz, these musicians play with an exactitude that would be suffocating were it not for their abandon, recklessness, and passion. Nowhere is this more evident than in the hilarious and scathing "Anne Smith Relates the Conquest of America," with its stridently American-English narration, swing charts, distortion guitars, flimflam rhythms, and a melodic framework that literally falls apart in every measure but moves shambolically forward. Frigg's Brecht is a masterpiece of sorts, one that offers a view of love among the ruins of 20th century popular music from Berlin to Los Angeles. ~ Thom Jurek

Brecht
$7.99 Like the Archie Shepp and Alice Coltrane volumes in the Impulse Story series, the Pharoah Sanders issue is one of the flawless ones -- despite the fact that it only contains four tracks. Ashley Kahn, author of the book the series is named after, wisely chose tracks with Sanders as a leader rather than as a sideman with John Coltrane (those were documented quite well on the John and Alice volumes). The set begins with "Upper Egypt and Lower Egypt," recorded in 1966 while he was still a member of the Coltrane band. Featuring Sanders on tenor, piccolo, percussion, and vocals, it also contains a who's who of the vanguard: pianist Dave Burrell, guitarist Sonny Sharrock, bassist Henry Grimes, percussionist Nat ...

You will be taken in from the opening instrumental track "Intimate Encounter" to a masterful re-make of Yes' song "Your Move / All Good People" to the closing meditation of "One Day The Father." If you're already a fan, this effort has been long anticipated. If you are just climbing on board you will soon be singing "... so satisfied, Iâm on my way!"Christopher's dynamic vocals, guitar playing, and thought provoking lyrics have earned him the praise of many local fans, and the recognition of his peers. With a growing list of musical accomplishments and CD releases under his belt, including an ASCAPlus award in 2006, he continues to grow as a guitarist, singer, songwriter, performer, and producer.Whether performing for 17,000 people at a venue like the Hollywood Bowl, or in an intimate coffee house, it is not uncommon to see Christopher playing along side a whoâs who list of musicians.Especially now with the availability of websites like YouTube, Christopher can be seen anytime playing with the likes of GRAMMY winner and consummate guitarist Laurence Juber, or ukulele master Jake Shimabukuro. In addition, he has performed or shared billing with many other noted national and local acts. A selective list includes: The Kingston Trio, Jars of Clay, Anna Nalick (whom he groomed for major label signing), Oz Fox and Tim Gaines of Stryper, Shane Fontayne, Mark Schulman, and Robert Deeble.Christopher ...
