Clifford Jordan was still an important tenor saxophonist during the years prior to his death in 1993, though his final recording for Criss Cross is one of his lesser known dates. With pianist Kevin O'Connell, bassist Ed Howard and Ahmad Jamal's former drummer Vernell Fournier, Jordan's performances are all top-shelf quality throughout this 1986 session. In addition to a swinging waltz treatment of Billy Strayhorn's "Lush Life" and a gorgeous rendition of the standard "Little Girl Blue," he explores the music of Duke Ellington and Thelonious Monk with equally strong results. The leader's sole original is "Royal Blue," which has a tense, somewhat menacing introduction, then lightens up into a more familiar closing-hour blues setting as Jordan finally makes his entrance. The drummer contributed the easygoing Latin tune "Armando." Any fan of Clifford Jordan will want to seek out this release. ~ Ken Dryden

| | Monsieur Leroc Le Slow Motion Boogie Woogie CD (1999)
Royal Ballads songs
$11.85 German DJ/producer Monsieur Leroc's debut album is a smooth, funky combination of various late-20th century musical idioms. Combining acid jazz, hip-hop, dub, and downtempo in equal doses, LE SLOW MOTION BOOGIE WOOGIE is an exact description of the type of music Leroc makes. Staying away from downtempo's often-easy slide into grey, depressed regions, Leroc keeps his music sultry, occasionally kinky, and always melodic.
Leroc borrows heavily from jazz as a compositional element, aping the improvisation sequence of each instrument having its say, as on the track "Jazzz." Bachelor pad music surfaces on "Une Boogie Pour Faye," and "I Think I," one of the album's most interesting tracks, steals a vocal scat and electric guitar riff straight out of post-SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER 1970s FM radio. For all intents and purposes, "I Think I" could be the "Pina Colada Song" of the future: equal parts cheese and sincere longing, played out over a thumping bassline.
By blending massive amounts of jazz, funk, R&B, stuff from the 1960's/70's, and some cool old guitar rock, Monsieur Leroc's electro -hip hop - euro - soul - head trip surfaces in the U.S. and is made available for the first time as a domestic release by Cornerstone R.A.S.The funk flavored ethereal sounds of Monsieur Leroc are the sonic equivalent of tapping into the Pythagorean "music of the spheres". Listening to Le Slow Motion Boogie Woogie is like visiting a funk filled Heaven - a perfect place to have an "out of body experience."Monsieur Leroc makes his way from Highmshighm, Germany - somewhere near the Black Forest in France. When asked about how it all started: Leroc responded "I took piano lessons and angeldust when I was little...since that didn't really kick off, I decided to take some jazz lessons."When asked how he usually produces his albums, Monsieur Leroc responded: "I sit in front of the computer, smoking, with my headphones on, all naked, except for the shoes." Fueled by nicotine the unclad Leroc busts out a collection of the funkiest jams this side of the Black Forest using as his medium a Macintosh computer, an Akai S2000 sampler and a Korg 01/W pro X keyboard (collectively and affectionately known as the groove circle). The U.S. release of Le Slow Motion Boogie Woogie includes all the tracks of it's European release, from the lazy synthesizer and drum beat driven opening track Monique's Theme to the retro, soul groove of I Think I and the guitar wacca wacca underwritten, deeply pleasant lo-funk ...
