tenor saxophonist's trio w. Hod O'Brien on piano and Jacques Schols on bass, recorded Oct. 4 & 10, 1987
Personnel: Ted Brown (tenor saxophone); Hod O'Brien (piano); Jacques Schols (bass). Recorded live at Cristofori, Amsterdam, Holland on October 4, 1987 and at Studio 44, Monster, Holland on October 10, 1987. Includes liner notes by Mark Gardner. Personnel: Ted Brown (tenor saxophone); Hod O'Brien (piano). Liner Note Author: Mark Gardner. Recording information: Cristofori, Amsterdam, The Netherlands (10/10/1987); Studio 44, Monster (10/10/1987). Photographer: Frans Schellekens. A veteran tenor saxophonist who gained early recognition for his work with the Lennie Tristano school, Ted Brown has remained fairly obscure despite his consistent creativity. This superior trio set with the great bebop pianist Hod O'Brien and bassist Jacques Schols, features Brown at the top of his form. Other than his own "Smog Eyes" and the lesser-known "Trane's Slo Blues," all of the tunes are familiar bebop standards, but Brown, O'Brien, and Schols uplift and infuse them with fresh ideas. Among the more memorable selections are "Trane's Slo Blues," "Lester Leaps In" and "Lover Come Back to Me." Quite possibly this is the definitive Ted Brown set to acquire; certainly it is highly recommended to lovers of straight-ahead jazz. ~ Scott Yanow

| | Solomon Burke That's Heavy Baby 1971-1973 CD (2005) (Import) Australia
Free Spirit MP3 Album
$19.99 Raven presents the very best of Solomon Burke's recordings for MGM in the 1970s, many on CD for the first time. A pioneering soul singer, Burke's powerful voice and fervent emotionality were much-admired through the 1960s. At MGM, with arranger Gene Page, Solomon deftly crafted a commercial and contemporary sound - both urban pop ballads and rhythmic hymns to black empowerment, all framed around his impassioned voice. Using fractured, multi-layered background vocals ...

Free Spirit music CDs
$19.99 Raven presents two classic soul/funk albums by Ike & Tina Turner, "Nutbush City Limits" and "Feel Good" on one CD for the first time. Dominated by Tina Turner's powerful voice and volcanic stage presence and Ike's hard-driving guitar, the duo's incendiary, funked-up blend of rock and soul made them one of the most potent live acts of the early 1970s. These two storming albums saw the duo transplant the visceral frenzy of their stage act successfully into the studio. Complete with five bonus tracks, including the Extended Disco Version of their iconic signature tune "Nutbush City Limits" and Tina Turner's super-funky rendition of The Who's "I Can See For Miles", this 25-track, ...
