A wonderfully sparse and subtle offering from guitarist Philip Catherine, featuring Tom Harrell on flügelhorn and Hein Van de Geyn on bass. This drumless trio pays memorial tribute to Chet Baker with a tranquil, melancholy set of standards and originals, beginning with Miles Davis' "Nardis" and continuing with an extended Catherine original titled "Twice a Week." The set also includes a swinging "I Remember You," a mid-tempo "My Funny Valentine," and a nod to hard bop with Hank Mobley's "Funk in Deepfreeze." Harrell contributes two originals, "From This Time, From That Time" and "Songflower," while Van de Geyn weighs in with a dark waltz, "Soul Role." Catherine closes the album with his own angular, altered "Blues for G.T." Catherine's bright, twangy sound and tasteful use of vibrato, harmonics, octave leaps, and volume and chorus effects distinguish him from many other straight-ahead jazz guitarists. Van de Geyn proves himself to be not only an excellent timekeeper, but also a conversational ensemble player. And this stripped-down setting especially flatters the velvety, lyrical brilliance of Tom Harrell. ~ David R. Adler

I Remember You songs
$14.99 Mehldau is a strikingly original young jazz pianist, an innovator in a world too often bound by tradition. Combining classically influenced harmonic sensibilities with a sensitive, panoramic approach that owes to both Bill Evans and Keith Jarrett, Mehldau burst onto the '90s jazz scene, taking the world by storm. SONGS is the third volume in a series of trio works that find Mehldau deftly accompanied by the stalwart rhythm section of drummer Jorge Rossy and bassist Larry ...
| | Bobo Stenson Serenity CDs (2000)
I Remember You album
$22.89 Over its last two albums, Reflections (ECM 1516) and War Orphans (ECM 1604), the Bobo Stenson Trio has enveloped itself in a study of chromatic lyricism and modal architecture that balances the three traditional jazz elements for alchemy -- rhythm, harmony, and melody -- the organization of space within the composition. On Serenity -- the group's most ambitious project to date and Stenson's ever -- the Bobo Stenson Trio (Bobo Stenson, piano; Anders Jormin, bass; Jon Christensen, drums) has taken the results of its earlier explorations along this line and transformed them into an entirely new kind of spontaneous compositional terrain, one that holds balance for the space between players rather than on individual contributions of sound. The fact that this methodological apparatus has worked lyrically with adherence to Western scale and melodic invention is a surprise; that it has deepened over time as the band's communication and sense of adventure develops is a wonder. Over two CDs, Stenson proves his trio is capable of realizing spatial improvisation in the context of not only their own compositions and improvisations, ...
| | Natalie Merchant Motherland CD (2001)
I Remember You CD music
$6.45 In the post-Lilith Fair solo career of former 10,000 Maniacs frontwoman Natalie Merchant, MOTHERLAND stands as something of an achievement. It melds the lyrical craft she began developing all those years ago with the Maniacs, the contemporary pop sensibilities she's been crafting since the beginning of her solo work, and a variety of new influences that seem to have seeped in somewhere along the way. Things kick off distinctively with the creepy, violin-colored reggae slow-burner "This House is on Fire." From there it's off to an eclectic mix-and-match of ...

I Remember You music CDs
$22.35 Heavy metal from the U.K., Orange Goblin's 2003 fifth recording includes "If It Ain't Broke Break It" and "Crown of Locusts."
Many wondered how Orange Goblin would cope as a four-piece following the departure of second guitar player Pete O'Malley, but, by making it sound like nothing has changed, the band's fifth album, 2004's Thieving from the House of God, answers that question with a perfunctory "just fine, thank you." Of course, as will be discussed shortly, this same "staying of the course" could also pose a problem. But first things first: except for retreating just a tad from the overt punk-metal of its predecessor, Coup de Grace, Thieving from the House of God retains the same, appropriately thick and meaty post-stoner rock crunch -- neither here nor there in terms of outright hard rock or heavy metal -- that Orange Goblin fans have come to expect. "Some You Win, Some You Lose" gets the ball rolling in promising fashion and the novelty of counterpoint vocals in the chorus; and ensuing hard rockers like "Hard Luck" and "Black Egg" each manage a few surprises between them -- be it in the former's clever lyrics, or the latter's striking use of piercing, soulful ...
