On his debut as a leader alto saxophonist, Steve Wilson is joined by Tom Williams, Mulgrew Miller, James Genus, and Carl Allen for a unusual program of one original, one standard, and seven jazz compositions, five of which are rarely, if ever, covered by other musicians: Ted Curson's "Reava's Waltz," Joe Sample's "Freedom Sound," Eddie Harris' "ATC," Ron Carter's "Last Resort," and Bobby Timmons' "Damned If I Know." While no individual's playing really stands out on this recording, and Wilson was still developing his voice on alto sax, the music is well arranged and well played. The standard "Put on a Happy Face," played at a more relaxed tempo than usual, is transformed into a happy swinger, while Wilson's "Ujima," played at medium tempo, alternates between an Afro-Cuban and swing feel. A good example of modern post-bop played by a group of the music's best young musicians. ~ Greg Turner

New York Summit album
$13.85 There are times when you listen to this recording and, if you close your eyes, you would think you were listening to Susannah McCorkle. That is how powerful Dena DeRose can be. For this, her third release for Sharp Nine Records, the vocalist continues to dazzle with her sensuous voice and confident style. Once again, she assembles a strong team to accompany her, including drummer Matt Wilson, vibist Joe Locke, and Jim Rotundi (on a couple of tracks). When DeRose is at her best (as she is on several tracks), she is as good a singer as there is. Her "Day in Day Out," taken up-tempo, hearkens to the great vocalists of years past. DeRose gets inside the lyrics, and with a slight vibrato to end ...

| | Kurupt Against Tha Grain CD (2005)
New York Summit songs
$15.05 On his 2005 release, AGAINST THE GRAIN, Kurupt announces his return with the powerful track "I'm Back." Not only had he reappeared after a four-year absence, but the one-time Dogg Pound member was back on the Death Row imprint he fled nearly a decade earlier. Despite the respite, Kurupt's manner has not changed a speck nor have his skills vanished. On everything from the opening political tract, "Speak on It," to the throwback sweetness of "Tha Past," AGAINST THE GRAIN continues the rugged, insightful style one expects from the veteran MC.
The 2005 release of Kurupt's Against tha Grain was surrounded by drama. It was promised in early 2004 and then delayed, and it's the reunion of the snarling rapper and Suge Knight's Death Row, a label suffering a decade-long dry spell after dominating the early '90s. The album itself is strong -- well rounded and slick but with sharp teeth and a hard ghetto punch. When the album addresses ...
