Peter Bernstein's second CD as a leader reunites him with pianist Brad Mehldau and once again features him in a quartet. However, both Bernstein and Mehldau had grown quite a bit as soloists during the previous two years (the pianist really tears into "Nobody Else but Me") and this time they are joined by the virtuosic bassist Christian McBride and drummer Gregory Hutchinson. In addition, the songs (five Bernstein originals and four standards) are stronger and challenge the soloists to play at their best. Among the highlights are "Jet Stream," "Jive Coffee" (Bernstein's sly revision of "Tea for Two"), "Will You Still Be Mine," and a tasteful "My Ideal" in addition to "Nobody Else but Me." An excellent effort. ~ Scott Yanow

Signs Of Life album
$19.45 Guitarist Peter Bernstein, who was 25 at the time, made his recording debut as a leader on this CD. He plays quite well, as does his friend, the up-and-coming pianist Brad Mehldau. Teamed with bassist John Webber and drummer Jimmy Cobb, Bernstein and Mehldau (who was almost recognizable at this early point) play three of the guitarist's ...

Signs Of Life CD music
$9.59 Anyone who loves traditional jazz piano will recognize the names Ralph Sutton and Johnny Varro. Their careers have been on roughly parallel paths since the 1950s, when each had a turn as intermission pianist at Eddie Condon's Greenwich Village club. On this delightful album the two are paired in an unusual combination: two pianos with bass (Phil Flanagan) and drums (Ed Metz, Jr.). It's a potentially awkward arrangement, but they swing together beautifully, sometimes alternating solos and sometimes improvising together in a style reminiscent of the earliest days of New Orleans jazz. The program is strictly potboiler standards: ...
