Trumpeter Greg Gisbert leads an impressive septet through a set of challenging material on this program. His playing is excellent as are his two originals, which are performed along with a pair from pianist Janice Friedman (including the witty "The Love Dirge"), Maria Schneider's "Waltz for Toots," and three jazz standards. The music is post-bop jazz that occasionally sounds a bit (during the ensembles) like Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers and sometimes looks back toward classic bebop. The solos are mostly quite advanced, with each of the horn players having their spots (tenor saxophonist Tim Ries is particularly impressive). The versatile Greg Gisbert, who is sometimes quite fiery, deserves to be much better known. ~ Scott Yanow
this is Gisbert's 3rd Criss Cross album - he's joined on a four-horn front line by 3 of New York's finest - Conrad Herwig, Tim Ries, Jon Gordon & Greg Gisbert, as well as a 3-piece rhythm section
Recorded in New York, New York on December 27, 1996.
Recording information: RPM Studio, New York, NY (12/27/1996).
Personnel: Greg Gisbert (trumpet, flugelhorn); Jon Gordon (soprano & alto saxophones); Tim Ries (soprano & tenor saxophones, flute); Conrad Herwig (trombone); Janice Friedman (piano); Jay Anderson (bass); Gregory Hutchinson (drums).

Court Jester album
$14.55 A veteran tenor saxophonist who gained early recognition for his work with the Lennie Tristano school, Ted Brown has remained fairly obscure despite his consistent creativity. This superior trio set with the great bebop pianist Hod O'Brien and bassist Jacques Schols, features Brown at the top of his form. Other than his own "Smog Eyes" and the lesser-known "Trane's Slo Blues," all of the ...

Court Jester songs
$8.49 Frank Wess has long been one of the most underrated flautists in jazz, but it's his primary instrument on this CD reissue of a Moodsville LP recorded in 1960. With fine accompaniment by piano master Tommy Flanagan, bassist Eddie Jones and drummer Bobby Donaldson, the leader's lyrical chops are evident in Alec Wilder's rarely performed ballad "It's So Peaceful in the Country." The light Latin setting of "Star Eyes" initially spotlights Flanagan's elegant piano, with the rhythm switching gears as Wess works his magic on flute. Flanagan alone introduces the dreamy interpretation ...
| | Eric Alexander Battle: Live At Smoke CD (2005)
Court Jester album
$14.29 Tenor saxophonist Eric Alexander and alto saxophonist Vincent Herring pair up for two nights of fireworks at Smoke on this 2005 release. Unlike the various two-tenor battles that have appeared on numerous releases over the decades, the contrast provided by featuring two different reeds is easier on one's ears. The furious take of "Blues Up and Down" (penned by the two-tenor team of Gene ...
