Upward & Onward album
$14.29 On their Criss Cross follow-up to Upward and Onward, One For All mainly concentrate on original group member compositions, continuing to hone the neo-bop these musicians have become known for over the past decade. The Long Haul was recorded after a single gig in New York, keeping the improvisatory freshness of the session bright. While the members of One For All perform in this manifestation only occasionally, they manage to share the spotlight and provide an unbridled musical camaraderie (a nineties version of the Jazz Messengers would not be far off the mark.) Among the highlights are drummer Joe Farnsworth's classic Coltrane quartet influenced opener "A Cry For Understanding," the Latin tinged, three horn melody on "Echoes In the Night," pianist David Hazeltine's reflective contributions "The Poo" and "Summer Nights" the later starts to sizzle mid way through into lazy funk before the initial theme gently reappears. Tenor saxophonist Eric Alexander's ...

Upward & Onward music CDs
$15.05 Jazz supergroup One for All delivers another solid mix of straight-ahead standards and originals on its fourth Criss Cross release, Wide Horizons. Although never a group to stray too far from its original concept of a modern Art Blakey-style ensemble, One for All's musicians nonetheless have displayed a steady growth in individuality. Trumpeter Jim Rotondi's fat, burnished tone and solid harmonic concept are delicious to the ears, and it seems that every year tenor saxophonist Eric Alexander transmutes even further in his mitotic process toward becoming the most finely developed jazz musician on the planet. While past albums ...

Upward & Onward music CDs
$14.89 Two unrelated but rewarding sessions by the great Dixieland cornetist Wild Bill Davison are combined on this delightful CD. The first session -- a six-song ballad-oriented date that also includes trombonist Jimmy Archey, Garvin Bushell on clarinet and (on "Yesterdays") bassoon, pianist Ralph Sutton, bassist Sid Weiss, and drummer Morey Feld -- has some particularly ferocious playing from Davison (who takes his first recorded vocal on ...
