Steve Davis' fourth Criss Cross set as a leader has a different instrumentation than his previous sets. The trombonist is teamed with vibraphonist Steve Nelson and guitarist Peter Bernstein in a sextet/septet that also includes pianist David Hazeltine, bassist Peter Washington, drummer Joe Farnsworth, and (on three of the eight songs) altoist Mike DiRubbo. Davis, who in addition to being a Curtis Fuller-inspired trombonist is an underrated composer, wrote five of the eight songs and the band also plays Thad Jones' "The Summary" and one song apiece from Peter Bernstein and Leonard Bernstein ("Somewhere"). Despite the unfamiliar material, the swinging hard bop style is quite accessible to straight-ahead jazz listeners and the blend between the trombone, vibes, and guitar is quite attractive. All of Steve Davis' Criss Cross sets are well worth acquiring. ~ Scott Yanow
for his 4th Criss Cross album, trombonist Steve Davis has created a fresh, effective forum for presenting his instrument & compositions - vibist Steve Nelson & guitarist Peter Bernstein join Steve in this unique front-line, supported by the stellar "One

Vibe Up! album
$14.55 A veteran tenor saxophonist who gained early recognition for his work with the Lennie Tristano school, Ted Brown has remained fairly obscure despite his consistent creativity. This superior trio set with the great bebop pianist Hod O'Brien and bassist Jacques Schols, features Brown at the top of his form. Other than his own "Smog Eyes" and the lesser-known "Trane's Slo Blues," all of the tunes are familiar bebop standards, but Brown, O'Brien, and Schols uplift and infuse them with fresh ideas. Among the more memorable selections are "Trane's Slo Blues," "Lester Leaps In" ...
| | Conrad Herwig Osteology CD (1999)
Vibe Up! CD music
$14.65 Conrad Herwig's second Criss Cross release is a trombonist's dream as Herwig joins forces with another trombonist, former Jazz Messenger Steve Davis, and a first-rate rhythm section of pianist David Kikoski, bassist James Genus, and drummer Jeff "Tain" Watts to perform three Herwig originals, two jazz classics, and two standards. Both Herwig and Davis are skilled improvisers with distinctive voices on their chosen instruments, choosing to complement each other rather than compete. Herwig plays mostly in the bone's upper register,Davis prefers the middle and lower registers, while Kikoski, Genus, and Watts supply enough fire to keep the proceedings heated. Favorites include the hard swinging ...
| | David Hazeltine Blues Quarters, Vol. 1 CD (2000)
Vibe Up! music CDs
$15.05 David Hazeltine's third Criss Cross release features him in the company of tenor saxophonist Eric Alexander, bassist Dwayne Burno, and drummer Joe Farnsworth. The pianist contributes three originals, two of which, "Naccara" and "A Touch of Green," share a similarly spacious, hard bop-oriented harmonic layout. The third, "Blues Quarters," is a 16-bar minor blues. Its form can be divided into quarters (hence the title), a fact that becomes especially interesting during the "trading fours" rounds with the drummer. On this tune and on Charlie Parker's "Cheryl," Alexander's and Hazeltine's mastery of the bop-blues idiom is astonishing. The lightning-quick closing track, "What Are You Doing?," also highlights Alexander's ...
