| | Todd Garfinkle Immigrant's Dilemma CD Todd Garfinkle Discography of CDs
Contains two bonus tracks that appear to promote other M-A Records releases.
Pianist Todd Garfinkle and his quintet perform six of his post-bop originals on this adventurous set. Although none of the songs (which include "Vulgarity in Tropical Living" and "The Immigrant's Dilemma") are destined to become standards, they serve as viable vehicles for the playing of Garfinkle, guitarist Miroslav Tadic, Tom Alexander (on tenor and soprano), bassist Yasushi Yoneki, and drummer Takumi Iino. This CD is rounded off by a pair of selections ("Davy the Baby" by tenor saxophonist Marty Krystall's Special Quartet and "The Traveller" from Miroslav Tadic's group) taken from other albums put out by M-A Music. ~ Scott Yanow

| | Masada Quintet Stolas: Book Of Angels Volume 12 CD (2009)
Immigrant's Dilemma CD music
$12.99 STOLAS is the 12th volume in John Zorn's BOOK OF ANGELS series of compositions, and it's a welcome and compelling idea that he decided to re-form his stellar Masada quintet for the occasion. In addition to the rhythm section of Joey Baron and Greg Cohen, trumpeter Dave Douglas, and pianist Uri Caine, Zorn enlisted tenor sax giant Joe Lovano to replace him on all but one cut where he adds his alto, making the group a sextet. Here klezmer, Yiddish folk music, bossa nova, and other Latin jazz all come together in a seamless meld of tunes that accent the symmetry of ensemble play as much as they do an extremely advanced sense of ensemble harmonics, rhythmic invention, and, of course, tautly arranged spaces for individual improvisation--check out the album's longest cut, "Tagriel," for evidence as Zorn's composition not only travels genres but centuries. The popping showcase for solos that ...
| | Lounge Lizards Live In Berlin 1991 Vol. 1 CD (1991)
Immigrant's Dilemma music CDs
$9.79 When saxophonist John Lurie originally formed the Lounge Lizards in 1978, it was a type of joke band, a satirical group that made fun of the idea of a jazz combo. However, after a short time he began taking the music much more seriously without losing his wit. The 1991 version of the Lounge Lizards was potentially one of his strongest, featuring such notables as saxophonist Michael Blake, trumpeter Steven Bernstein and vibraphonist Bryan Carrott. However two of the six selections on this Berlin set are very brief and the longest one, the 19-minute "Mr. Stinky's Blues," is a rather aimless introduction of the group members to the audience. Since it is in the middle of the disc, it slows down the little momentum that the band had built up during its best performance, "King Precious." The net result is that a strong group is wasted on largely inferior material which comprises a forgettable CD. Surely the Lounge Lizards performed more substantial material during their Berlin concerts ...
| | Marty Robbins Drifter CD (1966)
Immigrant's Dilemma songs
$10.29 Based on Marty Robbins' syndicated television series of the same name, The Drifter was one of the purest cowboy albums Robbins ever made. Though he had made several cowboy albums before -- indeed, his love of Western music informed much of his music -- the instrumentation and song selection on The Drifter was stripped-down and direct, concentrating almost entirely on epic Western narrative sagas. The lack of concise songs resulted in a less successful album by commercial standards -- only "Mr. Shorty" was a hit, while the "El Paso" sequel "Feleena" ran over eight minutes -- but The Drifter was one of ...
| | Steve Davis Systems Blue CD (2002)
Immigrant's Dilemma album
$13.89 Additional personnel includes: Mike DiRubbo (alto saxophone).
Steve Davis, the Criss Cross house trombonist and a member of One for All, is joined by a couple bandmates and two other label regulars for a session mostly devoted to standards. The setting sets Davis' deep debt to the work of J.J. Johnson in sharp relief. The trombonist develops his solos with smooth, measured phrases that emphasize eighth-note lines mostly in the middle register of the horn. On tunes such as "Who Can I Turn To," his work also bears evidence of early Miles Davis (not surprising given the close relationship between the trumpet legend and J.J. Johnson in the late '40s when each was coming to grips with bebop). What Davis lacks that his namesake had was a dramatic way with the melody. This is most evident on the trombonist's matter-of-fact ...
| | Unbound Jazz Recidivists CD (1996)
Immigrant's Dilemma CD music
$13.79 Inevitably, some worthwhile jazz CDs will fall through the cracks. One such disc was the Unbound's Jazz Recidivists, which was recorded in 1992 and 1993 and released by the small Evergreen, CO-based Tapestry label in 1996. It isn't hard to see why the Unbound have that name. The Unbound -- a pianoless quartet consisting of Pat Ireland on violin, the Rev. Dwight Frizzell on reeds, Eric George on bass, and James DeRigue on drums -- play mildly avant-garde post-bop that is loose, uninhibited, and free-spirited. However, their work is also relatively lyrical and melodic -- certainly by avant-garde standards. Jazz Recidivists is far from an album of atonal chaos or screaming for the sake of screaming; an inside/outside approach prevails, but the material (some of which often incorporates East European and Middle Eastern elements) is generally more inside than outside. ...
