Saxophonist Peter Epstein is nothing if not distinctive; his thoughtful, unmistakable playing has been a highlight of recordings by Michael Cain, Jerry Granelli, and many others. Staring at the Sun finds him taking the plunge as a leader on a session of tentative but beautiful exploration. Epstein has assembled a quartet of alarming sensitivity, able to provide his experiential pieces with the delicate touch they deserve. The tonal blend of Jamie Saft's accordion with the leader's saxophone is astonishing, and Saft displays a remarkable fluency on this sadly underused instrument, from spinning curious melodic lines to coaxing forth ominous tone clusters. Bassist Chris Dahlgren is solid but never overpowering and uses his prodigious arco technique to great advantage (also, his composition "Per" is among the album's highlights). Ubiquitous drummer Jim Black's role runs the gamut, from laying down odd-meter grooves of daunting complexity to providing gentle ambient coloration. "In Your Voice," the album's opener, is stunning; Dahlgren begins with a descending figure alternating in meter between six and seven while Black dances around him -- Epstein and Saft enter with a poignant melody that leads the band into a territory of airy abstraction. "Cumulus" finds its seed in several simple tones that the band slowly builds upon to a triumphant climax, while Dahgren's "Per" is a starkly beautiful composition for bowed bass and saxophone with accordion droning quietly in the background. MA is known for meticulous attention to audio, and the label complements the album wonderfully, leaving no subtle touches unheard. And listeners should not want to miss a single one on this astonishing debut. ~ Tom Benton

"Only one word suffices to describe the sounds emerging from David Rothenberg's CD Why Bird Sing: sublime. This is music that transports you to another world." --Discover"Rothenberg... merges the intentional music of an improviser with the more mysterious sounds of feathered friends." --All About Jazz"Rothenberg is a participant in the passerine orchestra, not just an observer. Benny Goodman, eat your heart out!" --E Magazine"Why Birds Sing is one of those ramblings that transforms one of those taken-for-granted things into let's-think-about-it-again stuff."--The New York TimesDavid Rothenberg finds musical inspiration beyond the human world. He jams with lyrebirds and laughing thrushes, catbirds and bou bou shrikes. This recording has been five years in the making, and it involves cutting-edge musicians from all over the world mixing their sounds with the wonderful musical melodies and tones of birds. Hear the interspecies jams that set the book in motion, as Rothenberg's clarinets and Michael Pestel's flute meet a white-crested laughing thrush in the National Aviary, and a wild Australian lyrebird named George in his rainforest home. These pieces are live interactions betweeen humans and birds, and the music lies somewhere along the uncharted flyways of evolution. Back in the studio a stretched-out hermit thrush song meets the bass clarinet, and Maori flutes, Estonian guitars, and live Finnish electronics meet catbirds, starlings, skylarks, and waves. David Rothenberg is an improvising composer and philosopher with numerous recordings, performances, and books to his credit. His 1995 record, On the Cliffs of the Heart, with percussionist Glen Velez and banjo player Graeme Boone, was released by New Tone Records. A few years earlier John Cage praised this trio's "sense of virtuosity traveling all over the world." Jazziz named it one of the top ten releases of 1995. His 1997 record, Unamuno, blending improvised music with natural soundscapes, was featured on NPR, WDR German Radio Cologne, and Radio Mafia in Finland. In 1999 he released Bangalore Wild, a ...
Tati
Enrico Rava Tati CD  (2005)

Staring At The Sun songs
CD $14.99  Audio Samples
Enrico Rava's restrained trumpet playing has been regarded in modern times as perfectly reflective of the ECM sound. It is wrapped in European classical music while displaying a lyricism that goes beyond strict tonality, reaching for a soulful arena that only he can claim in the post-Miles Davis era. The emerging pianist Stefano Bollani joins Rava and veteran drummer Paul Motian for this contrabass-less trio that uses a downplayed sonic footprint, at times ethereal, but mostly calmed, collected, and serenely furnished. The compositions are mainly Rava's in hushed tones, but occasionally a modern progressive, bop-influenced, or energetic presence creeps in. Bollani's style is romantically based and postmodern in derivation, while Motian is simply one of the most sensitive drummers ever, with ears that pick up on every shading or nuance, translating it into artful percussive brush strokes of light color. The title track with its pensive, requiem mood; the tranquil, ...
House That Trane Built: The Best Of Impulse Records
House That Trane Built: The Best Of Impulse Records CD  (2006)

Staring At The Sun album
CD $6.65  Audio Samples
Given that these tracks were taken from the four-disc box set House That Trane Built: Best of Impulse Records to accompany Ashley Kahn's excellent book of the same name, it is difficult to place this music in context given its diversity (a goal from the jump at Impulse). It does give an overview of the avant-garde side of the label with tracks by John and Alice Coltrane, Archie Shepp, and Albert Ayler. It is balanced with cuts by Art Blakey and Earl Hines, Oliver Nelson, John Handy, and Charles Mingus. The sequencing is troublesome and problematic: placing Hines' read of Duke Ellington's "Black and Tan Fantasy" after Albert Ayler's "Our Prayer" is just plain strange, as is John Handy's funky "Hard Work" after Alice's "Journey in Satchidananda" (and these are the last four cuts on the disc). The most beautiful transition here is from Mingus' "Theme for Lester Young (Goodbye Pork Pie Hat)" to the first section of John Coltrane's "A Love Supreme." Given its length of only 61 minutes, it is truly puzzling that more music wasn't added to shed further light on Impulse's range. There's nothing here by Gil Evans, Chico Hamilton, Gabor Szabo, Gary McFarland, Tom Scott, Pharoah Sanders, or Ben Webster, and the reason, on the surface at least, is inexplicable. This is the only truly shoddy volume in the set. ~ Thom Jurek The discs are arranged chronologically. Disc one begins with Gil Evans and his reading of "Where Flamingos Fly" from Out of the Cool, issued in 1961. Other big-band moments on this disc include Oliver Nelson's "Stolen Moments" from Blues and the Abstract Truth, and Coltrane's reading of "Greensleeves" from his Africa Brass issue. These three albums alone present very different large band approaches to jazz, and the number of established and up-and-coming names who played on them is staggering: Budd Johnson, Ron Carter, Elvin Jones, Charlie Persip, Eric Dolphy, Bill Evans, Roy Haynes, Freddie Hubbard, Paul Chambers, Julius Watkins, Julian Priester, Booker Little, McCoy Tyner, Reggie Workman, and more. Bob Thiele, the label's house producer and A&R man, is equally responsible. He was a visionary, open to any and all changes in the music; also in his favor was a healthy ambivalence toward the music business itself. Other headline acts in those early years included Art Blakey, Ben Webster, Benny Carter, Coleman Hawkins, Count Basie, Johnny Hartman, and Charles ...
