Long before the term world music was a twinkle in anyone's ear, there was Osibisa -- a Ghanaian name meaning "criss-cross rhythms exploding with happiness" (a big phrase for a small word). But the mix of musicians from Ghana, Britain, and the Caribbean exploded on the English scene, scoring a massive hit with the catchy, danceable "Sunshine Day" and opening ears to their mix of highlife, prog rock, and reggae -- prior to them the only mix of African music and rock had come with an obscure collaboration of Steve Winwood with some West African artists. But Osibisa crossed over in a big way, not only finding the charts, but also the more open student audience with songs like "Celebration" and "Make Everybody Happy." It was sunshine music in a dank climate. However, in the fickle musical world, their popularity faded after a few years, down to a core audience that kept them going. The band continued to expand their musical horizons, however, as pieces like "Ayiko Bia" and "Ke Le Le" show. While they might seem more like a historical footnote than a mighty force, they were where so much of it started, and this collection, even if too much of it is live rather than the definitive original studio recordings, does them and their polyrhythms and melodies ample justice. ~ Chris Nickson

Celebration - The Best Of Osibisa album
$11.99 Barry White's ALL-TIME GREATEST HITS contains the original single versions of his classic solo hits, as well as two songs White performed as the lead vocalist of the Love Unlimited Orchestra. All tracks were previously released on the 20th Century Records label.
All tracks digitally remastered by Gary Mayo (Polygram Studios).
It took quite a while for a definitive Barry White compilation to hit the market, but All-Time Greatest Hits -- part of Mercury's Funk Essentials series -- finally filled the bill in 1995. Boasting a full 20 tracks from White's heyday of 1973-1978, more than half of which made the R&B Top Ten, All-Time Greatest Hits is easily the most generous single-disc White collection on the market. It includes the edited single versions, not the full-length album tracks, ...

Celebration - The Best Of Osibisa CD music
$12.09 BLUES ON THE BAYOU won the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Traditional Blues Album.
Having just turned 73, B.B. King released BLUES ON THE BAYOU as a kind of retrospective look at 50 years of playing the blues. King produced BAYOU himself and recorded it at a remote studio in the heart of Lafayette, Louisiana with the band he'd been playing with for the past 10 years. A relaxed and well-oiled feeling is felt throughout this group of songs, some of which were newly written while others are older numbers that were dusted off and re-recorded specifically for these sessions. "Blues ...
| | Donald Byrd Black Byrd CD (1973)
Celebration - The Best Of Osibisa music CDs
$8.25 Purists howled with indignation when Donald Byrd released Black Byrd, a full-fledged foray into R&B that erupted into a popular phenomenon. Byrd was branded a sellout and a traitor to his hard bop credentials, especially after Black Byrd became the biggest-selling album in Blue Note history. What the elitists missed, though, was that Black Byrd was the moment when Byrd's brand of fusion finally stepped out from under the shadow of his chief influence, Miles Davis, and found a distinctive voice of its own. Never before had a jazz musician embraced the celebratory sound and style of contemporary funk as fully as Byrd did here -- not even Davis, whose dark, chaotic jungle-funk stood in sharp contrast to the bright, breezy, danceable music on Black Byrd. Byrd gives ...

| | Stevie Wonder Definitive Collection CDs (2002) 2CD Edition
Celebration - The Best Of Osibisa album
$20.89 There aren't any accolades you can heap upon Stevie Wonder that haven't already been heaped -- all you can do is let the song titles speak for themselves: "Superstition," "Sir Duke," "I Wish," "Higher Ground, "Overjoyed," "Living For The City," "My Cherie Amour," "You Are The Sunshine Of My Life"...one could go on all day.
Missing in action for much of the 1990s, Stevie Wonder is a living legend whose consistent creative output is sorely missed. THE DEFINITIVE COLLECTION provides a snapshot overview of Wonder's stellar legacy starting back in 1963 as a teen musical prodigy with the exuberant "Fingertips Part 2." This jubilant tune, showcasing Wonder's much-touted facility on the chromatic harmonica, is a powerful harbinger of things to come. Along the way are classics that find this Michigan native going from being a one-man Motown hit machine to a young artist whose vision eschewed singles-based sensibilities for album-long artistic statements.
