| | Osibisa Ojah Awake CD - Import Osibisa Discography of CDs
(1 Customer Review)
Osibisa's eighth album in only five years, 1976's Ojah Awake was the Ghanaian Afro-poppers' commercial high point in their adopted home of Great Britain. Though the band had a strong cult following throughout their career, this big-selling album spawned two big hits: the Brazilian-flavored "The Coffee Song" (a '40s novelty song that had previously been recorded by the Andrews Sisters, Rosemary Clooney, and, improbably, Frank Sinatra) and the disco-tinged groover "Dance the Body Music." As might be imagined, then, this is Osibisa's most slickly commercial record, with Gerry Bron's glossy production smoothing out the free jazz influences that had peeked around the corners of earlier Osibisa gems like Woyaya. (It's telling that as "purer" West African highlife artists like King Sunny Ade started showing up on U.K./U.S. cultural radar, Osibisa's critical reputation plummeted.) That said, in no way does Ojah Awake feel like a sellout move; Teddy Osei and company keep the rock and funk influences as a flavoring, not a main dish, and the exciting, potent highlife of the title track or "The Warrior" is among the group's best work. This is an excellent album for newcomers to Afro-pop, though those already familiar with more challenging artists like Thomas Mapfumo or Fela Kuti might find it a little bland. The AIM CD adds two contemporary single tracks, "Living" and "That's Life," and an alternate take of "The Coffee Song." ~ Stewart Mason

Ojah Awake album
$6.19 The '60s Blues Revival begins here. Calling this album influential is an understatement akin to calling the Grand Canyon a rut; suffice to say that an entire generation of musicians (mostly young and white) heard this and had their lives changed forever. In fact, for at least a year after the album's release in 1965, ...
| | VH1 Presents The Corrs Live In Dublin CD (2002)
Ojah Awake CD music
$6.39 This audio document of The Corrs' Dublin homecoming concert has pretty much everything fans of Irish pop could wish for, including an appearance from Bono in his earthly incarnation, fresh from an audience with President George W. Bush. It's to the band's credit that the charismatic singer fails to steal the show, despite creditable efforts via an anthemized version of Ryan Adams' beautifully downtempo "When the Stars Go Blue," and a great, leering rendition of Lee Hazlewood and Nancy Sinatra's "Summer Wine."

| | Drive-By Truckers Southern Rock Opera CDs (2001) Digipak
Ojah Awake music CDs
$11.99 A sprawling two-disc set, the Drive-By Truckers' SOUTHERN ROCK OPERA is a cracked masterpiece that's enjoyable on several different levels. Hipsters might enjoy the giggly premise of a two-disc set devoted to a slightly altered retelling of the rise and fall of 1970s Southern rock icons Lynyrd Skynyrd. Progressive rock fans lamenting the modern era's relative lack of story-driven albums divided into "Act I" and "Act ...
| | Keane Hopes & Fears CD (2004)
Ojah Awake songs
$11.89 Often compared to countrymen Coldplay and Radiohead, the UK-based trio Keane plays a similarly majestic, sweeping blend of pop-informed rock music. Fueling the comparisons is the fact that lead vocalist Tom Chaplin makes heavy use of the same kind of Jeff Buckley-esque falsetto and emotion-filled wails favored by Chris Martin and Thom Yorke. On HOPES AND FEARS's epic tracks such as "She Has No Time," however, Keane takes the more dramatic elements of the aforementioned bands' sounds and magnifies them, creating piano- and synthesizer-driven cinematic soundscapes dripping with quiet heartache and existential angst. In addition, Keane incorporates minimalist trip-hop beats, which, in combination with Chaplin's strong pop melodies, evoke a male-led Portishead jamming with the Raspberries. One of the most sonically atmospheric groups of the Britpop scene, Keane ignores the notion of traditional guitar-based rock music in favor of something altogether quieter, yet equally as intense.
The English music press can never let anyone be. They're always quick to hail the next big ...
| | Antony I Am A Bird Now CD (2005)
Ojah Awake album
$12.49 Though he probably achieved his greatest mainstream recognition backing up Lou Reed on tour, idiosyncratic songbird Antony is a fully established artiste in his own right. Backed by the Johnsons, as on I AM A BIRD NOW, he crafts delicate ballads that skirt the lines between cabaret, artsong, and pop, with the kind of voice that Stephin Merritt would probably kill for. Antony's unique pipes bring to mind an androgynous Bryan Ferry or a high, quavery summit meeting between Jimmy Scott (another Reed supporter) and Aaron Neville. The stately, graceful, largely piano-driven ...
| | Dredg Catch Without Arms CD (2005)
Ojah Awake CD music
$8.49 Early on, critics often described Dredg as a metal group. However, the quartet has since matured into a hard-edged indie-rock ensemble that seeks diversity and refinement in its music. On CATCH WITHOUT ARMS, the band favors highly orchestrated parts, dense guitar riffs, and powerful ...
| | Bounty Killer My Xperience CD (1996)
Ojah Awake music CDs
$13.99 In the rough-and-tumble '90s, Bounty Killer (along with nemesis Beenie Man) was one of the premier DJs to emerge from the hard-core dancehall scene. MY XPERIENCE is Bounty Killer's impressive 1996 compilation of hot Jamaican singles that feature him alongside a boatload of guest artists. The lines between hip-hop and reggae seem blurred as some of rap's biggest stars appear including Jeru Da Damaja ("Suicide or Murder"), Raekwon ("War Face [Ask fi War] Remix") and The Fugees (the ambitious "Hip Hopera [`Mr. Punk']"). Bounty Killer's huge appeal always stemmed from songs that combined slack lyrics and hard-core depictions of street life. The album's "Gun Down" and "Guns & Roses" (with Anthony Malvo and Red Rose) follow in that style. For MY XPERIENCE, he also includes colorful covers (Michael Sembello's "Maniac," featuring Richie Stephens) and draws from the moral underpinnings of roots reggae ("The Lord is my Light & Salvation," "Seek God"). Reid also appears with hip-hop madman Busta Rhymes on the beat-heavy "Believe it or Not," a track that is surpassed only by Bounty Killer's monumental "Revolution III," which features Beenie Man and reggae legend Dennis Brown.
