Let's Do It Again album
$11.18 Last time around, Shakira touched upon so many styles she couldn't be contained on one album, splitting Oral Fixation in two. This time, she focuses on one sound only: a pulsating electro-disco that crosses all boundaries and welcomes all nationalities. Such concentration behooves Shakira, freeing her to release her inner She Wolf, a wild wacko who's as coo coo as she is carnal. And for as sexy as Shakira is -- crucially, her music is ...

| | Angie Stone Unexpected CD (2009)
Let's Do It Again music CDs
$13.10 On her second album for Concord's Stax imprint (and fourth overall), Angie Stone delves deeper into funk and hip-hop than on her previous outings. Her last offering, The Art of Love & War, was a critical and commercial triumph for the vastly underrated vocalist, and topped the Billboard chart. With a slew of producers including Sly Williams, Willie "Chuck" Shivers, Karrim King and Fitzroy Reid, Steven "Supe" White, Jonathan Richmond, Jazze Pha, and Stone herself, these dozen tracks continue to reveal her versatility as a vocalist and recording artist; she can sing whatever it is she wants to with equal verve, authenticity, and flair. Despite the slicker and more diverse sounds on Unexpected, the soul quotient is high, even if this isn't strictly a neo-soul album. The new beat consciousness reveals itself most on the title track, which is hard funk at its 2009 best. Cuts such as "Free" might have come right out of the 1990s with their use of careening synths, shimmering hip-hop beats, and colliding loops. But the melody is solid, its chorus and refrain catchy. "I Found a Keeper" is another; its production, ...
| | Z-Ro Cocaine CD (2009)
Let's Do It Again songs
$15.05 Despite his status as one of hip-hop's most prolific artists, Z-Ro never quite spreads himself too thin. The provocatively titled COCAINE is his second release from 2009, and features his trademark self-aware, yet rapier-sharp lyrics over some of the hotter beats out of the fertile Houston scene. The Intro skilfully sets out the landscape as the dark-vocaled MC reflects upon his choice of a life of street dealing without a shred of ...

| | Jimmy Bennington Midnight Choir CD (2003)
Let's Do It Again music CDs
$14.79 The debut album from West Coast touring artist Jimmy Bennington. The basic style seems to be hanging around the domain of avant-garde jazz, with some excursions into more rhythmic and melodic pieces as the mood takes the band. Half of the compositions (three-and-half of the seven tracks) are from sax player Seth Paynter, one is from Coltrane, and a few are leftovers from around the jazz scene. Given that the leader of the group is a drummer, there's surprisingly little drumming to be heard in the majority of the works, serving more for effect and accentuation than for rhythm, and holding out of whole sections of songs entirely. That said, there's also precious little melody to be heard from the horn section, often simply letting out a few notes at a time, rarely in any noticeable order. The free jazz movement admittedly has (at least) two aspects: that of the twisted melodies and inventive approaches coming from the Ornette Coleman and John Coltrane camps, and that of the sparse, empty, instrumentalism from the side of the ...

| | Ivory Joe Hunter Since I Met You Baby CD (1988)
Let's Do It Again album
$7.99 A skilled songwriter and nimble pianist, and possessing an emotive, velvet voice that prefigured Nat King Cole and other such crooners, Ivory Joe Hunter was instrumental in bringing R&B to an uptown audience in the late '40s. He almost repeated the trick in the mid-'50s for the then-emerging rock & roll style (although it took uptown audiences a good long while to catch on) when he signed with Atlantic Records and released a series of rock & roll-leaning sides for the label between 1954 and 1957, including the majestic "Since I Met You Baby" in 1956. A year later, Hunter's "Empty Arms" neatly welded R&B and straight country together, complete with a bed of soulful gospel organ. Hunter was so skilled at combining strains of blues, gospel, country, jazz, R&B, ...
| | Gene Burkert Jazz Palette CD (2006)
Let's Do It Again CD music
$13.25 Multi-reed player Gene Burkert has recorded sporadically as a leader, though he has excelled as a sideman on a number of other recordings. Alternating between alto, tenor and soprano saxes, flute and alto flute, clarinet and bass clarinet (sometimes within a single song), Burkert assembled a top-notch core group, including pianist Christian Jacob (known for his work with vocalist Tierney Sutton and the late Maynard Ferguson), bassist Trey Henry (also a regular with Sutton) and drummer David Tull, with guitarist Larry Koonse added on selected tracks. The opener is a surprising choice: "Sugar," taken from one of Stanley Turrentine's ...
