Monsore album
$15.95 This is a continuous in-the-mix CD compiled and mixed by DJ David Waxman.
Despite the rather unfortunate title, Ultra Chilled, Vol. 1 assembles some of the most established names in down-tempo electronica and trip-hop, mixing them with some relative unknowns. The flow from Dido to Gorillaz to St. Germain to Morcheeba is deceptively smooth, as is what will be most listeners' introductions to acts like Zero 7 and Goldfrapp, with each song seamlessly blending into one another. The sequencing on the two-disc set is a little predictable, with many of the better-known artists grouped near the front of each disc, but little glimmers of familiarity (like Alex Gopher's "The Child" on disc two or the impeccable inclusion of Badly Drawn Boy's "The Shining" on the first ...

$16.59 The blueprint for Ultra Chilled, Vol. 2 is the same as the solid first edition in Ultra's downbeat series -- which rose above the heap of substandard, commercialized chill-out compilations -- with compilers balancing a few downtempo tracks by a varying cast of vocal artists (Coldplay, the Specials, Black Box Recorder, Nelly Furtado, Bebel Gilberto, Radiohead) with electronica specialists (here, usual suspects like Boards of Canada, Groove Armada, Thievery Corporation, Tosca, Fila Brazillia, and Röyksopp). ~ John Bush

Monsore songs
$25.59 Contains original 15-track mono album as well as 12-track stereo version.
It's easy to imagine the confusion with which this manifesto for the defense of the status quo was received on its release in 1968. The world was in turmoil and the pose of the Street Fighting Man, rebellious and politically aware, was far sexier than the quaint homebody image the Kinks present here. The title track finds Ray Davies proudly declaring himself a preservationist of custard pies, vaudeville, and such comic book characters as Desperate Dan. However, these slices of suburban life have weathered a lot better than most of their contemporaries.
The Kinks were working in their own homey little world, as evidenced by songs such as the album's title track, "Picture Book," about family snapshot albums, and "All of My Friends Were There" whose very un-rebellious subject is public embarrassment. To compound ...

Monsore album
$11.99 LA DONA is mostly vintage Marie--sweet, dark, and sultry. Tracks such as "I'm Still in Love" and "My Body's Hungry" are steeped in the kind of '70s soul perfected by the Delfonics and the Stylistics. Many tracks open with modern hip-hop-flecked beats, as on "Honey Call" or "I Got You" (featuring her mentor James), but a jazzy sort of funk prevails, bringing with it a more timeless quality. Even "Makavelli Never Lied" with its opening calls of "thug life," mixes references to both '90s stars (2Pac and Lauryn Hill) and '70s icons (Marvin Gaye and Chaka ...

Monsore CD music
$9.05 It may seem odd that a band clearly influenced by a variety of worldbeat styles -- reggae, soca, mbaqanga -- would be based in Detroit, MI. But then, Paul Simon of Forest Hills, Queens, New York, NY, made a success by drawing on some of the same styles for his celebrated Graceland album, so there seems no reason why anyone anywhere in the global village can't draw upon rhythms not native to them. And it's hard to argue when 47UMa (named after a newly discovered star) begins producing its dance music and Gail Baker begins to sing of love, rhythm, and world peace in her warm, rich alto. On "African Dream," she explains her love of sounds from far beyond the Upper Midwest over music that could have come from Soweto, noting, "I knew instinctively/A distant part of me/Felt the harmony/Deep in my African dream." Of course, no matter how much they love exotic beats, the members of 47UMa remain Americans drawing upon a rock & roll tradition. For every world influence, there's one from the U.S., as they fall back on the sounds of Buddy Holly here and Bo Diddley there, often coming across as just a good-time Midwestern bar band, or even a jam band. On "Ojos Bien Abiertos (Eyes Wide Open)," it's as if Alison Krauss is fronting the Grateful Dead on a follow-up to "Touch of Grey." 47UMa isn't so much a true world music group as it is an American rock band that's spent a lot of time listening to the The Harder They Come soundtrack, Bob Marley & the Wailers, and a few records from South Africa, and tried to apply those sounds to their established taste for American rock. It makes for an entertaining hybrid that no doubt sounds just a little different from the average group playing in the local roadhouse. ~ William Ruhlmann
47UMa, fronted by past Billboard Magazine pick-hit vocalist Gail Baker, is a Detroit area world beat band, with reggae, ska, soca, samba, African, blues, New Orleans, and rock-n-roll influences. Baker's credits include 1980 Detroit jazz radio favorite 'Live at Chaps-on-Main', 1983 hit 'What If Thinking', and a 1997 Silent Radio retrospective on the MEGAWAVE label. Mike Friedman is a long-standing ...
