One would not expect to use the word opus when discussing the mid-'90s D.C./Virginia indie pop scene that revolved around the Teenbeat and Simple Machines record labels. This was a scene that fed on 7" records and four-track cassette-only releases. With Exploder, Washington, D.C.'s Eggs proved that their four-minute pop excursions could come together to form a cohesive double album by combined the familiar Beatlesque melodies with raucous post-punk noise and tongue-in-cheek quirkiness. Unlike Eggs' debut album, Bruiser, which was in essence a solo project for singer/guitarist Andrew Beaujon, Exploder was created by a more permanent ensemble, including bassist Evan Schurack and guitarist/trombonist Rob Christiansen (the lack of a permanent drummer is comically addressed in an entire page of the liner notes). The result is a much more confident and diverse performance. "Why Am I So Tired All the Time" delivers a professional version of the "we just wrote this five minutes ago" style, while "Salsa Garden" makes a case for just how dramatic and full sounding a shoestring indie band can be. "Saturday's Cool" is a garage band's shot at '70s rock bombast, complete with ridiculous harmonies and an a Yes-inspired synthesizer solo. The finest moment on the album comes at "Evanston," an exquisitely written song which lacks any sly referential treatment. Dispersed between the complete songs is the occasional 30-second sound collage. The CD release even contains one-minute silent tracks to mark the breaks where the listener would have to flip the sides of the vinyl version. Mixed at Inner Ear Studios, best known as the recording home for D.C.'s other great musical leaders, Fugazi, Eggs clearly intended to raise the bar on the quality of records coming from themselves and their peers. They succeeded by creating one of the most outstanding and timeless albums to come out of that scene. ~ Joshua GlazerOption (8/94, p.98) - "...this is a daunting chunk of material that reveals its nuances during repeated plays....That's the only way one could explain a record so intriguing that at first listen sounds so casual and careless..." Melody Maker (3/5/94, p.41) - "...This album is far weirder than your King Missiles or your Weens; it changes mood constantly, trips out occasionally....pleasantly eccentric..." NME (Magazine) (2/5/94, p.41) - 7 - Very Good - "...file this in that cherishable oddball niche, just to the left of Sebadoh...." $11.89 BY A THREAD is Gov't Mule's first studio album since HIGH & MIGHTY was issued in 2006. Since that time, bassist Andy Hess has been replaced by Jorgen Carlsson, though Hess appears on two tracks at the end of the album. Carlsson's playing style is much more aggressive than Hess', and is therefore closer - in spirit anyway - to Gov't Mule's original bassist, the late Allen Woody, though he possesses an adventurous sense of time and is harmonically more colorful than either Woody or Hess. Carlsson and drummer Matt Abst are a solid match, since Abst is a drummer used to shifting time signatures and allowing the unexpected in while ...

Teenbeat 96 Exploder music CDs
$10.25 here's a bio according to the editor of Heckler magazine:What makes a band good? Raw emotion, high energy live performance, attitude, and of course, good songs. Sacramento, CA's Filibuster has it all. THE MUSIC Some call it urban rocksteady, or streetsteady. Filibuster stays true to their roots, relying on organic tones, hard hitting grooves and gut-wrenching, lip-smacking vocal melodies. Filibuster songs range from breakneck ska to deep reggae without sounding retro or losing cohesiveness, which is not an easy task in today's confused music market. Refreshingly raw, refined and exciting, Filibuster binds you into head-nodding spells, and makes you want to rush to see them live. With a sound evoking an emotion that money can not buy, it is easy to sense that Filibuster has blue collar sensibility and mad street credibility. Throw in a tasty, yes, tasty (not cheesy and overused) DJ and you have a band with a crucial sound. Bottom Line: Every Filibuster song makes the most stone cold bystander sway and groove to the beat, to the sound, to the song. THE BAND Filibuster is a six piece band combining a range of sounds from many eras of music. In fact, the many eras of Filibuster itself has led the sound through different size bands, different instrumentation, and different ideas to eventually become the tightly honed style found on Deadly Hi-Fi. Not all has been rosy. However, initiations have been turned into notches on the belt of the group that has become the representative of empowered youth, demonstrating ...
