Paul Bley has returned many times over to recording solo piano works. In the course of over three decades, Bley has found ever more possibilities. This 1993 recording stands comfortably aside his best work (including 1972's OPEN, TO LOVE--a peak solo piano recording by any player). On many of his albums, Bley interprets the work of other composers (most notably those by two former wives, Carla Bley and Annette Peacock), but SWEET TIME is entirely self-composed. As always, the line between composition and improvisation blurs as Bley unearths every nuance of melody. Space and silence have always been integral to his playing as well; notes linger, fade or simply stop, creating gorgeous tension, drama and beauty.
Solo performer: Paul Bley (piano).

Photographer: David Daly.JazzTimes (5/96, p.112) - "Dry wine. SWEET TIME is full bodied, aromatic....Bley can work the keys like a psychiatrist, make you recall a swirl of deep feelings. After listening, you sigh, shake your head and move on, oh, but for a moment this has been the kind of tinkering with your insides, a sort of turning of your emotional earth..." | | Branford Marsalis Eternal CD (2004)
Sweet Time songs
$14.59 ETERNAL proves (yet again) that saxophonist Branford Marsalis, though no longer a "young lion" of jazz, still has a strong, unique musical voice. This 2004 album begins with "The Ruby and the Pearl," a somber tune that suggests an Argentinean tango. On this selection, Marsalis's soprano sax glides effortlessly over the understated ...
| | Don Ellis Tears Of Joy CDs (1971)
Sweet Time album
$13.59 Recorded in 1971, Tears of Joy is a Don Ellis classic. The sheer musical strength of this ensemble is pretty much unparalleled in his career. The trumpeter/leader had backed off -- a bit -- from some of his outlandish and beautifully excessive use of strange and unconventional time signatures, though there is no lack of pioneering experimentalism in tone, color, arrangement, or style. This double LP/CD features a string quartet, a brass octet (four trumpets, tuba, bass trombone, trombone, and French horn), four winds, and a rhythm section boasting two drummers, a percussionist, a bassist, and the Bulgarian jazz piano wizard Milcho Leviev. This is a sprawling album. Disc one is made up of short- to mid-length pieces, the most notable of which ...

| | Cuong Vu Come Play With Me CD (2001)
Sweet Time songs
$14.49 Redefining the concept of a horn-led trio, trumpeter Cuong Vu uses a minimum of instruments to acheive a bounty of tonal colors on COME PLAY WITH ME. Key to Vu's success in this endeavor is bassist Stomu Takeishi, whose fretless work reveals a kaleidoscope of sounds and feels, from agressive, full-throttle attack to languid, pastel notes that drift slowly and gently across the compositions, to a percussive, rhythmic approach. Takeishi is the only member of the trio capable of playing chords, so he also takes a more harmonic role here than your average bassist.

| | George Harrison Dark Horse Years 1976-1992 CDs (2004) Bonus DVD; Remastered
Sweet Time album
$112.19 THE DARK HORSE YEARS contains: THIRTY THREE & 1/3 (1976)/GEORGE HARRISON (1979)/SOMEWHERE IN ENGLAND (1981)/GONE TROPPO (1982)/CLOUD 9 (1987)/LIVE IN JAPAN (1992).
The 2-CD LIVE IN JAPAN is a multi-channel hybrid Super Audio CD playable on both regular and Super Audio CD players. THE DARK HORSE YEARS also includes a bonus DVD featuring song videos and concert footage from LIVE IN JAPAN.
A beautifully packaged collection, this set compiles all of the solo albums George Harrison released on his own Dark Horse label, from 1976's THIRTY-THREE & 1/3 to 1992's two-disc LIVE IN JAPAN. Although this period marked some creative valleys for the former Beatle, his slightest songs still outshine most artists' best offerings, and THE DARK HORSE YEARS boasts numerous high points.
Confident yet relaxed, THIRTY-THREE & 1/3 and 1979's self-titled album are particularly notable for the inclusion of songs that were nearly Beatles tracks ("Beautiful Girl" and "Not Guilty," respectively). The following albums, SOMEWHERE IN ENGLAND and GONE TROPPO find Harrison flirting with a distinctively '80s, synth-based sound, while 1987's blissed-out, Jeff Lynne-produced CLOUD NINE marks Harrison's welcome return to the pop charts ("Got My Mind Set on You"). Finally, LIVE IN JAPAN features Harrison performing solo and Beatles hits (including "Something," "Here Comes the Sun," and "While My Guitar Gently Weeps") onstage with longtime friend Eric Clapton and his band. On each of these Dark Horse records, Harrison's past with the Beatles is still tangible, but the Fab Four connection never ...

| | Art Hodes Glad To Be Here CD (2006)
Sweet Time album
$13.99 One-dozen traditional jazz piano solos by Art Hodes were recorded on July 19, 1986 but would not be released on CD until almost exactly 20 years later when the Solo Art label brought out a 40-minute disc bearing the title Glad to Be Here. The octogenarian (Hodes was born in Nikoliev, Russia in 1904) performed with characteristic ease, tossing a pair of originals and the "Tennessee Waltz" (a song he played quite often) into a sequence of tunes consisting mainly of old-time jazz and blues standards by Jelly Roll Morton, W.C. Handy, Leroy Carr, Maceo Pinkard, ...
