Crawfish Lady is the seventh release for the Justin Time label from Bryan Lee. This New Orleans blues guitarist manages to combine his Crescent City influences with Memphis soul and Chicago and Texas blues. Lee's guitar abilities bring to mind the spirits of Elmore James, Albert King, and Albert Collins. The appearances of Ward Smith and Jody Golick on tenor sax, Barney Floyd on trumpet, and longtime bandmember Marc Adams on organ add fiery flavor to this musical gumbo. ~ Al Campbell

Because Gloria Gaynor is best known for "I Will Survive," some listeners might have a hard time imagining that an album titled The Best of Gloria Gaynor could lack that disco-soul classic. But when this German LP came out in 1977, "I Will Survive" was still two years away, and Gaynor was best known for her work with the Meco Monardo/Tony Bongiovi/Jay Ellis team. Full of gems, this LP boasts some of the strongest tracks from Gaynor's first four albums, including "Never Can Say Goodbye" and "Honey Bee" from 1975's Never Can Say Goodbye; "Casanova Brown," "If You Want It (Do It Yourself)," and "How High the Moon" from 1975's Experience Gloria Gaynor; "Let's Make a Deal" and "I've Got You Under My Skin" from 1976's I've Got You; and "We Can Start All Over Again" and the haunting "Most of All" from 1977's Glorious. Of the four albums, Glorious is the least memorable; but to its credit, Polydor's German division picks two of the stronger tracks from that competent though unremarkable release. In 1977, dance club DJs didn't find this album terribly useful because Polydor favors the shorter versions of Gaynor's hits over the extended dance versions. The phrase "very best of" in an album title usually indicates a highly selective collection of an artist's career highlights. By that standard, in one sense Collectables Records' The Very Best of Freddy King, Vol. 1 should be called something else; a more accurate description of the contents would be "The Complete Freddy King on Federal Records, Vol. 1." That's because this is the first of three discs that present every recording King made for the King Records subsidiary Federal in chronological order. This disc traces King's Federal stint from his first recording session on August 26, 1960, to the following July. But in another sense, The Very Best of Freddy King is an apt title. King enjoyed all of his singles chart success during 1961, scoring six entries on the R&B charts and five on the pop charts, and all of those tracks are included here, from "You've Got to Love Her With a Feeling" to "Christmas Tears."
