Admittedly, it would be a stretch to file this as a Celtic recording, but since Maddy Prior's connections to that revival of the '60s and '70s are well documented (her band Steeleye Span borrowed heavily, at times, from the Celtic tradition), prevailing interest in her music still exists in Celtic circles. This is her second Christmas recording with the Carnival Band, a musical troupe that specializes in early music forms, playing instruments like clarinet, recorders, shawm and lute as well as fiddle, tin whistle and bagpipes. Capers and Carols is an unlikely collection of secular and mostly sacred songs that range from the seldom-heard "Boar's Head Carol" and the Cajun forerunner "Monsieur Charpentier's Christmas Stomp" to instrumental interludes of "Turkey in the Straw" and "Old Joe Clark." The a cappella American spiritual "Poor Little Jesus" contains a moving four-part harmony backup by the Carnival Band. This album doesn't necessarily produce images of snowflakes, holly and St. Nick, but it does provide a welcome alternative to some of the overplayed ghosts of Christmas past. ~ Dave Sleger

(11-12/94-1/95, p.124) - "...a tremendous treat....an ingenious, canny, motley crew comfortable with songs, arrangements and instruments spanning five centuries....[The Carnival Band] are a perfect foil for Maddy's voice..." $12.15 "Loser" was nominated for a 1995 Grammy Award for Best Male Rock Vocal Performance.
The definitive outsider, Beck is a lonely voice raging against the stifling winds of conformity and complacency in both our mainstream culture and in our stock-model counter-culture (check out one of his first indie releases, "MTV Makes Me Want To Smoke Crack"). Growing up in heartland America, Beck dropped out of high school and cultivated his muse on a combination of traditional folk music and Delta blues, not unlike another legendary outsider from the heartland--Bob Dylan.
Already well-known in the New York and Los Angeles folk scenes, Beck's stature as an independent artist was cemented by college radio programmers. While terms like "alternative" came to mean next to nothing, Beck's 12" version of "Loser," released on the Bongload label, became an underground hit. The music he makes on MELLOW ...

Cape Breton fiddler Ashley MacIsaac is as schizophrenic as ever on his self-titled first release for Decca. With his uniquely punk rock approach to Celtic reels and jigs, MacIsaac has plenty of room to toy with drum loops, reversed passages, and bizarro studio effects, and there are certainly moments where that experimentation pays off. The layered and loping "To America We Will Go" and the brittle "This Is My Father" both benefit from this multi-tiered approach, but it can also seem cluttered and unnecessary ("Grapes" may be the worst of these offenders). MacIsaac's ...

Carols & Capers music CDs
$13.49 River of Madness, originally released on D'Ville Records in 1994, is Steve Conn's long out-of-print "Louisiana" album. It features several songs that have become minor classics, like "Mardi Gras Morning" and "The One and Only Truth." It has been remastered by the great Jim DeMain in Nashville and sounds great. It also includes a bonus track, a smoking version of "I've Got Your Dog," recorded live in Louisiana with his old friend Sonny Landreth on guitar.Allen Howie said it better than we could in his review of the original album for the Louisville Music News in 1996. We'll let him take it from here:___Deft Musical Cross-PollinationBy Allen HowieWhile hanging out in the hospital with our new daughter last August, my wife and I couldn't help reflecting on how much our lives had changed from the time, just a year before, when we had been unwinding in New Orleans. Shortly thereafter, the mail brought a copy of Steve Conn's new release, River of Madness, and for the ensuing forty-two minutes, I ...
