In the dry, sun-baked hills of Anatolia was born a folk music of passion and rhythmic energy. Musicians of the secretive Moslem Sufi sect adapted this powerful music for religious rites and created a lively, raw musical form. These songs are still a stap

| | Gregory Isaacs Night Nurse CD (1982) Remastered
Turkish Sufi Music CD music
$10.45 A classic release from one of Jamaica's greats, NIGHT NURSE shows the Cool Ruler at his best--performing melodic, chilled reggae such as the title track and "Hot Stepper." The title track was a hit for Simply Red when they covered it in 1997. Although at his most prolific in the mid '80s, when he was beset by financial problems, Isaacs managed to maintain the quality of his material as this album proves. The Roots Radics provide excellent backing for Isaacs' smooth vocals. Perhaps a bit too mellow for fans of more militant reggae such as that purveyed by the Revolutionaries, time has nevertheless proved this to be a classic reggae album--the epitome of the feel-good Jamaican sound.
Although his 1981 album, More Gregory, was picked up for international distribution, Gregory Isaacs' 1982 release, Night Nurse, was his first to be designed for an audience outside Jamaica. Accordingly, Island Records head Chris Blackwell upgraded the overall sound quality, making this Isaacs' most professional-sounding record yet, and he brought in synthesizer player Wally Badarou to overdub keyboard parts on the tracks, making them less spare and distinguishing the arrangements ...

| | Night Of Chesky Jazz Live At Town Hall: JVC Jazz Festival CD (1992)
Turkish Sufi Music songs
$15.89 All of the music on this CD comes from the June 24, 1992, concert at Town Hall in New York City, with a host of artists each being featured. Trumpeter Tom Harrell leads off with two fine originals, the turbulent "Journey to the Center" and the mellow but swinging "Weaver." His very strong supporting cast includes ex-boss Phil Woods on alto sax, tenor saxophonist Joe Lovano, and pianist Jim McNeely, as well as bassist Peter Washington and drummer Bill Goodwin. Pianist Fred Hersch is next, beginning with a dazzling trio arrangement of Brazilian composer Egberto Gismonti's "Nostalgia," with some superb arco cello by Erik Friedlander and powerful percussion from Tom Rainey. A captivating medley of two Hersch originals, "Child's Song" and "Forward Motion," and the humorous (and well-named) "Nostalgia," adding saxophonist Rich ...

Turkish Sufi Music songs
$12.79 The Portuguese Jazz Hour label presents 25 tasty tracks from the first six years of tenor saxophonist Zoot Sims' recording career. The 18-year-old Lester Young devotee is heard as a member of the Joe Bushkin Sextet on four swingin' sides recorded for Commodore on May 24, 1944. He then resurfaces as accompanist on two romantic ballads sung by Harry Belafonte in 1949. Sims' first date as a leader came together in Stockholm, Sweden on April 23, 1950. He pays tribute to Prez with a smart rendition of "Tickle Toe" and communes with harmonica man Toots Thielemans on "All the Things You Are." A bop exercise titled "Yellow Duck" was recorded the following day using a group billed as "Zoot Sims & His Five Brothers." This little band included a trumpeter named Sixteen Eriksson, baritone saxophonist Lars Gullin and pianist Dick Hyman, who sounds very comfortable with the boppish "Duck." On June 9, 1950, Hyman and Sims sat in with Pierre Michelot and Ed Shaughnessy on what could be considered the best of the Parisian Vogue sessions led by Roy Eldridge; on "It Don't Mean a Thing" and "Ain't No Flies on Me" Eldridge sings in duet with Anita Love. Seven days later Sims led his own quartet date for Vogue, in collusion with Gerald Wiggins, Pierre Michelot and Kenny "Klook" ...
