Mujuru, who comes of a long line of Shona mbira (hand-piano) players from one of the mbira heartlands, is also a talented percussionist and an important figure in the African neo-traditional movement. Here he plays his own arrangement of Shona percussion pieces, as well as a range of mbira compositions, with a virtuosity that needs no flashiness. ~ John Storm Roberts, Original Music

Rhythms Of Life album
$16.05 Celtic Woman, initially a one-shot collaboration by six leading Irish vocalists for a 2004 PBS special, struck a chord of adoration for the Emerald Isle, a fancy affecting both sides of the Atlantic, and swiftly became a permanent collective. THE GREATEST JOURNEY captures many of the best moments of elegant harmonizing by the act, from their serene and rapturous take on Enya's "Orinoco Flow" to the mournful yet poppily uplifting indigenous folk of "You Raise Me Up."
Import pressing includes two bonus tracks, Mo Ghile Mear (Live From Slane Castle) and Spanish Lady (Live From Slane Castle). Since their beginning in 2005, Irish vocal phenomenon Celtic Woman have sold 4 million units worldwide and occupied the #1 spot on the Billboard World Music Chart for a record-breaking 90 consecutive weeks. The Greatest Journey: Essential Collection represents the band's first Best Of collection and includes four new songs ('The Call', 'Pie Jesu', 'Ave Maria' and 'You Raise Me Up') as well as two ...
| | Dead Can Dance/Garden Of The Arcane Delight CD (1984) Reissue; Special Edition; Extended Play
Rhythms Of Life CD music
$11.99 On the evidence of this, the band's first record, Dead Can Dance can clearly be seen as a "Goth" group in the vein of Bauhaus, et al. The band's sound here is much more clearly based in the "contemporary"--Dead Can Dance uses traditional song structures, the group's instrumentation is almost entirely synthesized, and co-vocalist Lisa Gerrard's voice rarely gets into the truly ethereal, other-worldly realms that it would on later albums. Perhaps the most surprising single song on the album is "East of Eden." Built on a picked (and heavily echoed) guitar line and a rolling drum pattern, it is probably the only track in the DCD catalogue ...

Rhythms Of Life songs
$9.15 Also available as part of the Delta 2-CD set THE BEST OF EDITH PIAF.
A very strong best-of collection, VOICE OF THE SPARROW's title is a reference to Edith Piaf's widely used moniker "the Little Sparrow." And it's an apt moniker at that: Piaf was petite, ...

| | Azam Ali Portals Of Grace CD (2002)
Rhythms Of Life CD music
$11.69 Having made her name as the ethereal vocalist of Vas, Azam Ali ventures forth with this shimmering solo debut. Openly influenced by Hildegard von Bingen, PORTALS OF GRACE continues Ali's long relationship with the music and stories of medieval Europe, drawing from Sephardic, Breton, and Latin sources, to name a few.
The opener, "Lasse Pour Quois," recounts the heartbreak of a 14th-century French member of a little-known order of female troubadours who roamed the continent. "O Quanta Qualia," written by the poet-heretic Peter Abelard, is apparently the only surviving composition from a hymn book he wrote for Heloise, whose father had Abelard castrated.

Recorded between November 2001 & March 2002.

| | Untamed Youth Youth Runs Wild CD (1998)
Rhythms Of Life music CDs
$13.29 Although by 1998 the Untamed Youth were nothing more than a group that regrouped for the occasional reunion gig or semi-tour, this is their most perfectly realized album. Although the group's small-combo sound is still pretty well intact, leader Derek Dickerson stretches the musical boundaries further than previous outings, making this far more than your average one-riff retro album. For a band that seldom, if ever proffers their own material, there are five originals aboard this 14-track album. Dickerson brings us the instrumental "Lightnin' Louie," "Full Blown 426 Hemi," and the quirky but very cool "Mace Has Got a Hot Rod Dart," a '90s updating of the Jan & Dean "Schlock Rod" theme. But even more intriguing are the two vocal and songwriting efforts from bass player/resident wildman Steve Mace, "They Can't Call It Beer" (a rant against everything in the beer cooler that isn't Pabst Blue Ribbon) and ...
| | Essential Adam Ant CD (2003) Remastered
Rhythms Of Life songs
$8.25 Recorded between 1979 & 1995. Includes liner notes by Tony Fletcher.
Ranging chronologically from the guitar-heavy post-punk of his early recordings to the smooth, Adult Contemporary stylings of 1995's "Wonderful," THE ESSENTIAL ADAM ANT provides a compact overview of this seminal '80s popster. Ant was key to the development of the image and sound of early-'80s New Pop; his flamboyant persona and infectious, angular rock (flavored with elements of punk, dance, and pop melodicism) struck a chord with the public. Songs like "Stand and Deliver" and "Antmusic"-- which feature pounding, tribal drums and wry, chant-oriented choruses-- are inventive, yet immediately accessible. Consequently, these tunes topped the British charts in the '80s.
Naturally, these hit tracks are included on THE ESSENTIAL, as are the cheeky "Prince Charming" and the jaunty "Goody Two Shoes" (both of which also reached #1 in England). Ant's skill in incorporating the dark, jagged energy of post-punk into pop contexts is further evidenced on the psychobilly of "Place in the Country" and the goth-disco hybrid "Desperate But Not Serious." Appropriately, the compilation only includes two tracks from Ant's slicker '90s output, putting the emphasis ...
