Not as widely available as other recordings from Louis Armstrong and his All Stars, this disc is well worth the search, as it includes some of the most rollicking music ever recorded by this always-excellent lineup. Side one is a live San Francisco show from New Year's Eve, 1954. From the wildly enthusiastic crowd roar that accompanies the band's opening notes, the album never lets up, continuing all the way though a second San Francisco show three weeks later. The material here is culled from the All Stars' usual repertoire of crowd pleasers, although there are some surprises when it comes to the arrangements.
Highlights abound on this disc. The band burns through "Indiana" (an Armstrong staple) like men possessed, which is particularly amazing considering how often they played it. "Back O'Town Blues" is simply as down and dirty as it gets, with great rumbling bass from Arvell Shaw and wailing high-register trumpet note-bending from the Master. Trombonist Trummy Young delivers several superb solos. The wonderful Velma Middleton is also featured on two tracks and matches Armstrong perfectly with both vocal chops and humorous asides. Although the CD could use some better editing (songs often begin and end rather abruptly), to nit-pick would be missing the point, as these recordings are all about having a great time.

In Concert, 1954 CD music
$16.45 ALPHA AND THE PRINCES OF FUTAAlpha Diallo, a Guinean human rights lawyer, has been involved in theater and musical performance since his arrival in the U.S. in 2000. He wrote “The Wind Blew,” which was performed at the University of Chicago Theater in 2001 as a part of the Antigone Project. As a musician, he explores his musical roots with his band The Princes of Futa. His main source of inspiration comes from the Wolof and Fula cultures of West Africa. Through African beat and jazz, the Princes of Futa try to reconcile modern and traditional African culture while also embracing the musical multiplicity of the U.S. To audiences as varied as those frequenting the Green Mill, Darkroom, Morseland, the Subterranean, and various festivals across Chicago, his songs speak of peace, love, and justice. Alpha Diallo believes that human diversity will lead to a better world, and the Princes of Futa reflect that diversity, which, after all, is what America is all about.it is never too late to realize a dream. My mom told me that when I was a child I used to dream of being a pilot. When I was a teenager I used to dream of being a musician and singer but I ended up studying law. When I came to the United States I ended up working in a job that had nothing to do with law but I always dreamed of playing music. Today I realize that my dreams are not just about myself but also about the whole world. Dream come trueI have a dream, a dream of peace, a dream of seeing Jews, Christians, Muslims and people of all faiths come together to pray under one ...
