Director Martin Scorsese
Closed Captioned; Soundtrack English; Soundtrack French; Academy Awards

Paul Newman re-creates his role of Fast Eddie Felson, the pool hustler who believes the game "ain't about pool...It's about money!" He forms a partnership with a young hotshot and, through tutoring, rediscovers his own passion for the game.

Martin Scorsese's THE COLOR OF MONEY picks up where Robert Rossen's 1961 film THE HUSTLER left off. Fast Eddie Felson (Paul Newman), now middle-aged, finds the image of his youthful self in a pool hustler named Vincent Lauria (Tom Cruise). Trying to relive his past days of glory through the cocky but inexperienced youngster, Fast Eddie takes on the role of Vincent's manager and mentor. But Fast Eddie didn't count on having to contend with Vincent's smart, sexy, and extremely ambitious girlfriend. The three characters become engaged in an emotionally complicated power struggle as they make their way to Atlantic City, where Vincent plans to compete in his first pool tournament. Scorsese's, as well as Newman's, love for the character of Fast Eddie shines through in every frame of this sequel, something that didn't go unnoticed by the academy (earning Newman the Best Actor Oscar). Playing the young upstart, Cruise steps up to Newman's challenge, delivering an energetic performance that cemented his place at the top of the young Hollywood elite. Robbie Robertson's bluesy score reflects the smoky interiors of the various pool halls that Fast Eddie and Vincent haunt, adding another layer of moodiness to the already stylish proceedings.

Theatrical release: October 17, 1986. Shot on location in Chicago, Illinois, and Atlantic City, New Jersey. Shooting began on January 20, 1986, and finished in April 1986. Released on video July 1987. THE COLOR OF MONEY is the sequel to THE HUSTLER, which starred Newman and Jackie Gleason and was directed by Robert Rossen.

5 stars If you play pool/billiards you'll enjoy this movie.
I'll bet Allison Fisher has seen and enjoys this one. This is the sequel to "The Hustler" and Paul Newman is in both of them. Buy them both and enjoy a great "double feature". I'm confined to a wheel chair and I love to play "8 ball" and/or "9 ball"...one-handed. NO ONE wins them all. Floyd Turtle, Fort Bragg, California, USA

The Color Of Money

Legendary actor Paul Newman (MESSAGE IN A BOTTLE) and Academy Award(R)-nominee Tom Cruise (Best Actor, 1997, JERRY MAGUIRE) ignite the screen in this powerful drama. Brilliantly directed by Martin Scorsese (BRINGING OUT THE DEAD), Newman re-creates one of his most memorable roles from THE HUSTLER. As Fast Eddie Felson, he still believes that "money won is twice as sweet as money earned." To prove his point, he forms a profitable yet volatile partnership with Vince (Cruise), a young pool hustler with a sexy, tough-talking girlfriend (Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio, THE PERFECT STORM). But when Vince's flashy arrogance leads to more than a few lost matches, all bets are off between Eddie and him. THE COLOR OF MONEY will electrify you with its suspenseful story, dazzling cinematography, and dynamic performances.

Deep in the bombed-out streets of the Bronx lies Fort Apache, the local police station, in this hard-hitting drama that portrays the lives of two local cops working the beat in the worst precinct in New York. Paul Newman stars as Murphy, a loyal and ethical cop who has been working on the force for 18 years. He and his partner, Corelli (Ken Wahl), hit the streets every day, facing desperate and impoverished conditions with a combination of courage, responsibility, and gritty humor. Despite the hardships the two men face, they carry on with their off-duty lives, carousing at local bars, flirting with girls, and sharing a deep respect for each another. Murphy's developing relationship with Isabella (Rachel Ticotin), a local nurse, is at the heart of the film, a captivating combination of romance, violence, and tragedy. When two rookie cops are murdered in broad daylight, the new police chief (Ed Asner) shakes up the force and demands violent and reactionary measures against the local citizens. But their extreme police actions provoke riots in the streets, and Murphy and Corelli are forced to face the corruption and indifference that pervade their department. A truly moving tale of two men attempting to stay afloat in an urban wasteland, director Daniel Petrie's film features outstanding lead performances and an excellent supporting cast, including Danny Aiello and Pam Grier. Quoting from a score of tough-guy classics like THE HUSTLER, MEAN STREETS, and ON THE WATERFRONT, Mars Callahan writes, directs, and stars in this saga of pool and redemption. Johnny (Callahan) is a natural ace player held back from the pro circuit by his greedy mentor Joe (Chazz Palminteri), who wants to keep him hustling in smoky pool halls. At the encouragement of his law student girlfriend (Alison Eastwood), Johnny tries to go straight. Of course he has a kid brother (Michael Rosenbaum) who idealizes him in all the wrong ways; when he winds up in big trouble, only Johnny can bail him out by going back to the life he left behind. Christopher Walken shows up and steals the show as a strange lawyer who bankrolls Johnny against Joe in the big game climax. Rick Schroder plays the pro Johnny must beat to save the day; Rod Steiger is the hall's grizzled proprietor. POOLHALL JUNKIES is a lot of fun. Callahan's infectious love of the game shines through in every spectacular shot and Walken is at his bizzaro best. Fans of the films Callahan emulates should appreciate his heartfelt homage to cinematic coolness. Martin Ritt's HUD is an adaptation of Larry McMurtry's novel HORSEMAN, PASS BY, successfully transformed into an entertaining and ambitious contemporary Western. Set on a Texas ranch where Cadillacs, cattle, and transistor radios coexist uneasily, the film stars Paul Newman as the hedonistic, arrogant, and rebellious farmhand Hud Bannon. Hud is constantly at odds with his kind father Homer (Melvyn Douglas), who blames him for the death of his brother. Hud further strains their relationship when he begins taking his nephew out drinking and chasing women. But when it appears that Homer's herd of cattle may have contracted hoof-and-mouth disease, he asks his son's help and advice. Predictably, Homer and Hud disagree about what should be done with the cattle, so Hud tries to gain ownership of the ranch--which could mean taking away his father's sole possession and livelihood. Beautifully photographed, the film has a clean visual style, emphasizing both the open spaces of the Texan landscape and the Cadillacs and Dr. Pepper signs that adorn it. Patricia Neal won an oscar for her role, and Newman's performance gives the film its wit and considerable velocity; his character, Hud, is morally reprehensible but still likeable and charismatic, and he carries the film forward to its surprising and poignant ending.
