The third album from EPMD, BUSINESS AS USUAL, is the duo's most aptly titled album ever. In 1991, when the album was originally released, EPMD was making a solid claim at becoming one of hip-hop's greatest acts. After two straight gold albums and an ever-growing fan base, BUSINESS AS USUAL could not have been released with better timing. Hard-core tracks such as "I'm Mad," "Gold Digger," and "Manslaughter" firmly entrenched EPMD at the top of the hip-hop food chain. By this time, EPMD had won over its fans by delivering over and over again the typical trunk-funk tracks that they had come to expect. Vocally, the green-eyed bandit and PMD are both on point as usual. The killer cut "Rampage" has a guest appearance from LL Cool J. BUSINESS AS USUAL is just that.
Additional personnel includes: LL Cool J (vocals).
Recording information: North Shore Works, Long Island City, NY; Power Play Studios, Long Island City, NY; The Hit Factory, New York, NY.
EPMD: Erick Sermon, Parrish "PMD" Smith (vocals).
Entertainment Weekly (1/18/91) - "...EPMD raps tough." - Rating: A Q (3/91) - 4 Stars - Excellent - "...EPMD's essential appeal is that they remain two funky, unregenerate, materialistic and occasionally misogynistic young black men from Long Island." NME (Magazine) (2/17/96, p.48) - 7 (out of 10) - "...dependable, competent product from people more creative than they were [usually] willing to demonstrate..." Funk EPMD is one of my favorites. Simply put, they brought the funk. Off the heels of "Strictly Business" - considered a breakthrough - this lp was not as well received. And then their next lp, had the hit "Crossover". So what of the work EPMD in between? Well, it is my favorite, hands down. With E-Dub and DJ Scratch on production - you get rap at its best. Thick basslines, Horns, strings, piano, and turntables (remember those things?) all grace track after track of pure funk. Now, remember, this is 90 - PE has their layered chaos, Cube was drenched in George Clinton heaven - which was amazing. Not like the vapid 4note synth mess of today. Not gangsta, but EPMD was hardcore- early references to Philly Blunts and 9's pop up there and here. And the lyrics could be fun or tough - not Rakim or KRS or Kool G level - but puns and witicisms that work with street tough edge. Song by song: "I'm Mad" is a fury to kick it off - "Hardcore" and "Manslaughter" are laid back funk, relying on that thick bass, oh and features a yet unheard Redman - "Rampage", with LL Cool J has all three MCs rip it over a glorious track. There are 3 songs that give a real societal outlook on rap, its reputation and its responsibilites. "Goldigger" is a cautionary tale of getting ganked by the ladies of the same moniker - creatively, not demeaning. While "Mr Boazack" is a warning against unsafe sex. this album also sees: the "Jane" trilogycontinue, Scratch shine on "Fubky Piano", and the boys glow over a rehash of an oder utne on "Brothers...". Altogether - this is not just the Best EPMD album - but one of the 90's top ten, and one of Rap's top 50. Perfect, beginning to end. Submitted by hutch13 (Providence, RI) Was This Review Helpful? Eric & Parrish Making Dollars Long Island's Hip-Hop Statesmen from rap's golden era...by the time they dropped their 3rd LP in '90,EPMD had really hit their stride. They were really taking advantage of the sampling technology which was being developed at the time,& along with maybe NY pioneers BDP,were among the 1st crews to constantly cross-reference their own back-catalogue of material. There's some classic beats to be found here! Not only features the debut appearance of Redman (on 'Hardcore' & 'Brothers On My Jock'),but also LL Cool J guest stars(on 'Rampage').This is back when their hearts were in it.Way back in the days when every MC had their own vocal timbre & style of flow & prose.Unlike nowdays where most sound the same. Business As Usual CD music
$12.59 Sergio Salvatore has the odd fortune of resembling child actor Fred Savage from TV's "The Wonder Years, " and that could have plagued the public's openmindedness towards taking him seriously as a major jazz talent, rather than just a cute novelty. Fortunately, deep talent has won out and the prodigy, now a teenager, has bloomed into a multi-faceted composer/performer. A true product of the 90's, he not only named his shift towards contemporary pop/funk oriented jazz after an internet ...

| | Joe Simon Chokin Kind CD (1969) (Import) Netherlands
Business As Usual album
$9.39 There's something about Joe Simon's rich, burnished voice that sounds as smooth as a glass of 12-year-old bourbon, and feels just as appropriate on a sad and lonely day. In some respects, Joe Simon could be called the Roy Orbison of soul music -- there's a naturally sorrowful tone in Simon's voice that shines clearly through even the most upbeat material, and both singers had obviously learned more than a little from the sounds of classic country. The Chokin' Kind, the first of three albums Joe Simon would crank out in 1969, features three tunes written by the great ...
