Few old-school hip-hop artists made prominent comebacks in 1994, but Slick Rick, whose music never seems to grow outdated, dazzled the industry with BEHIND BARS. With his special brand of stories and experiences, Ricky Walters once again presents the original style that has been copped by so many others. There's only one "Ruler," and he's back to reclaim his title.
Rather than focus on the expected subject matter of his incarceration, BEHIND BARS concentrates on the suffering Slick Rick has endured at the hands of women. "A Love That's True (Part 1)" reconstructs his classic "Hey Young World" into an up-tempo story of no-good females, while on "A Love That's True (Part 2)," he goes off on the same themes but on a ragamuffin tip. On the Greg Nice-produced "Let's All Get Down," Rick invites Nice & Smooth to bring their updated style to his stage, but without overpowering his singular flow or stealing his spotlight. "Sittin' In My Car," which features ex-partner Doug E. Fresh, takes the rap-educted ear on a journey back to the mid-'80s, when the beatbox was a "profile" characteristic of the music and its culture.
Though it serves as only a tease for its listeners, BEHIND BARS is a fully-realized idea and among the few hip-hop discs that should meet the approval of both East and West Coast rap fans.

R. was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for Best R&B Album. "I'm Your Angel" was nominated for the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Pop Collaboration With Vocals. "When A Woman's Fed Up" was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance.
R. Kelly proves that he's as prolific as he is talented on the two-disc set R., which not only culls together his most noteworthy and successful work, but is bursting with new tracks as well. Filled from start to finish with Kelly's unique blend of smooth vocal stylings and no-nonsense lyrical stance, this album also features the work of a few of his prominent friends--the opener, "Home Alone" sports a guest rap courtesy of Keith Murray, while "Money Makes The World Go Round" is graced by Nas.
A more mainstream pairing is witnessed in the dramatic show stopper "I'm your Angel," which finds Kelly alongside superstar Celine Dion, but the collaboration which really makes its mark is "We Ride," which features Cam'Ron, Noreaga, Jay-Z and Vegas Cats in a veritable who's who of Hip Hop's brightest stars. As if all this weren't enough, the mega-hit "I Believe I Can Fly" is included for good measure. Newcomers to the world of R. Kelly will be attracted by the hits, but they're sure to stay for the instant classics and star-studded ...

It was easy to dismiss The Ruler's Back before it was even released, or to assume that there was no way it could live up to The Great Adventures of Slick Rick. Of course, it did not attain the same level of artistic success as that debut, and it certainly did not equal that album's commercial success, in fact seemingly passing beneath the radar of the whole hip-hop community, for the most part. At the time of its release, the album received mixed reviews and indifferent reactions even from fans of Slick Rick. That's another unfortunate, ill-fated aspect of The Ruler's Back, because, in truth, it is a strong, albeit uneven, progression from the debut and occasionally strikes a flawless note. To think of the album as anything other than a confused, transitional effort would be inaccurate, but it does not follow that it isn't an intriguing record. The messiness of its execution perfectly encapsulates the sort of turmoil Slick Rick was experiencing in his life at the time, and the music pulls the listener into that sort of tangled experience. Both Vance Wright's production and Slick Rick's rapping sound pressed for time, and they rush through the songs with a whip-lashing intensity. It can be a disorienting listen, but ...
