(3 Customer Reviews)
From "Strong Island" (Long Island, New York) came the unstoppable sound of Public Enemy, a rap band that saw itself as a vital, explicitly political voice in the black community.
YO! BUM RUSH THE SHOW, their debut album, filled a gap in hip-hop: raps that attempted to delineate black suffering in America, and instill pride in the place of hopelessness. The balance between Chuck D's explosive raps and Flavor Flav's humorous asides played perfectly off the scratching of DJ Terminator X. While some critics branded them "too hostile," their message spread to fans of all colors.

Q (9/95, p.132) - 4 Stars - Excellent - "...a stunning opening...just the first, in retrospect almost shy, step on a remarkable journey...a hard, droning extension of the basic drum`n'scratch Def Jam template that had served LL Cool J and the Beastie Boys so well..." Melody Maker (7/22/95, p.35) - Recommended - "...It wasn't just a new sound, a discovery. It was like being struck by a meteor..." NME (Magazine) (9/25/93, p.19) - Ranked #49 in NME's list of The 50 Greatest Albums Of The '80s. NME (Magazine) (7/15/95, p.47) - 9 (out of 10) - "...YO! BUM RUSH THE SHOW announced a hip-hop group who smouldered beneath dark, sparse beats like no other, introduced us to the coolest vocal double act ever...and featured as striking a statement of intent as you could wish for in `Public Enemy Number 1'....brilliant..." R. Kelly proves that he's as prolific as he is talented on the two-disc set R., which not only culls together his most noteworthy and successful work, but is bursting with new tracks as well. Filled from start to finish with Kelly's unique blend of smooth vocal stylings and no-nonsense lyrical stance, this album also features the work of a few of his prominent friends--the opener, "Home Alone" sports a guest rap courtesy of Keith Murray, while "Money Makes The World Go Round" is graced by Nas.
A more mainstream pairing is witnessed in the dramatic show stopper ...
| | Public Enemy Fear Of A Black Planet CD (1990)
Yo! Bum Rush The Show
$7.79 If Public Enemy's two previous albums had ruffled feathers, Fear Of A Black Planet set out its stall to exploit mainstream fears. Again, the title spoke volumes. This time they raged just as hard, but their political consciousness had grown. Professor Griff had been ejected from the band for his anti-Semitic stance, and much of the album's atmosphere is ...
| | Public Enemy Apocalypse '91: The Enemy Strikes Black CD (1991)
Yo! Bum Rush The Show
$6.39 APOCALYPSE '91-THE ENEMY STRIKES BLACK finds Strong Island's finest plying their raucous, angry trade once again, as unapologetic as ever. Their place in rap history was long secured by 1991, but the trio doesn't waste a second resting on its laurels--the album's opening salvo, "Lost At Birth" is militant and severe, introducing them as the "prophets of rage." Chuck D's no-nonsense delivery contrasts Flava Flav's manic rage, while turntable master Terminator X serves up an endless assault of hardcore sonic shrapnel.
"Nighttrain" is a staccato barrage, relentless and steeped in the blend of extreme racial pride ...
