Memphis Bleek's 1999 debut album COMING OF AGE, besides being the only hip-hop album of the year that didn't include any intentional misspellings in its title, signaled the rapper's emergence from the shadow of his more experienced mentor Jay-Z. THE UNDERSTANDING picks up where its predecessor left off.
With his individual artistic status already satisfactorily established, Bleek is free to pursue his lyrical muse wherever it leads him. While his approach can't be said to have softened, Bleek does intersperse the thug-life themes with less overtly criminalistic scenarios. Though Jay-Z makes a few guest appearances on THE UNDERSTANDING, it's more as a peer paying his respects than a teacher keeping tabs on his student.

Still, Bleek is growing....[his rhymes] spread over blends of thunderous electrobump..." NME (Magazine) (1/20/01, p.34) - 7 out of 10 - "...Clubbers will revel in Memph's celebratory tales of the high life and memories of penury, set to crisp, futristic beats..." $15.95 R. was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for Best R&B Album. "I'm Your Angel" was nominated for the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Pop Collaboration With Vocals. "When A Woman's Fed Up" was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance.
R. Kelly proves that he's as prolific as he is talented on the two-disc set R., which not only culls together his most noteworthy and successful work, but is bursting with new tracks as well. Filled from start to finish with Kelly's unique blend of smooth vocal stylings and no-nonsense lyrical stance, this album also features the work of a few of his prominent friends--the opener, "Home Alone" sports a guest rap courtesy of Keith Murray, while "Money Makes The World Go Round" is graced by Nas.
A more mainstream pairing is witnessed in the dramatic show stopper "I'm your Angel," which finds Kelly alongside superstar Celine Dion, but the collaboration which really makes its mark ...

$11.45 At the start of the 21st century, much hype in the rap world was built around the debut of Roc-a-fella rap artist Beanie Sigel. And rightfully so. Prior to his debut, the Philly native had created quite a discography without ever having his own song. He has appeared on posse cuts alongside a number of different MCs, including Jay-Z, and mesmerized listeners with his rhymes every time out (see the Jay-Z cut "Reservoir Dogs" or ...

$10.75 "Change The Game" was nominated for the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Rap Performance By A Duo Or Group.
Jay-Z released REASONABLE DOUBT, his solo debut, in 1996. Only four years later, he dropped his fifth album, THE DYNASTY. Matching his unique off-beat delivery with hip-hop's most impressive lyrics, the Brooklyn-native reinforces the idea that he is one of rap's most profound MCs. Once again, Jay-Z shows us he knows about "big pimpin'" with tracks like "I Just Wanna Love U (Give It 2 Me)" and "Parking Lot Pimpin'," tales about the fast life, women, and money.
Still, the rapper doesn't abandon the street ethics that have made him famous, as evident on the hustler's ...

$15.25 Breakstone is a fine bop-oriented guitarist, well known after years of recording dates. He knows his instrument and melody, and has an economical sense in terms of phrasing. On this studio recording though, he performs as if he were in a club or at a concert: Compositions linger on endlessly, averaging about seven to nine minutes. It gets a bit tedious to ...
