(3 Customer Reviews)
A concise and well-selected overview, Marty Robbins's ALL-TIME GREATEST HITS packs 20 songs by this eclectic singer onto one disc. Though categorized as a country artist, Robbins defied pigeonholing with his forays into styles as diverse as gospel, mariachi music, and sentimental ballads, yet he always managed to infuse each song with his own distinctive style. Robbins is probably best known for Western-themed story-songs, which usually involve romance, gunfights, and dusty Southwestern settings. The two prime examples, the nearly epic tale recounted in "El Paso" and the lugubrious "Streets of Laredo," lead off this collection, though the surging, minor-key "Big Iron" ranks alongside the two better-known tunes.
Robbins's straightforward singing style bears the stamp of pop crooners more than the twang of Nashville. In fact, Robbins recalls the smooth vocalizing of early Sun Studios artists (particularly Roy Orbison and Charlie Rich) on "Maria (If I Could)" and "Devil Woman." If Robbins throws out a few curveballs, such as the fuzzed-out guitar solo on the otherwise honky-tonk-flavored "Don't Worry" or the light, folk feel of "Ribbon of Darkness," it is all to his credit. This generous compilation is a perfect place to sample Robbins's genre-melding talents.

| | Martin Lass Sonnet CD (2002)
All-Time Greatest Hits music CDs
$7.18 No one disliked categorization more than Duke Ellington, who used to argue that there are only two types of music: good and bad. But realistically, a certain amount of categorization is necessary. If an artist's music is going to sell, it has to be marketed and promoted -- and part of the marketing/promotion process is describing the music you're trying to sell. Martin Lass is one of those artists whose music isn't all that easy to categorize. A classically trained violinist, Lass provides gentle instrumental music that has a strong classical influence (although it isn't classical per se) and occasionally has hints of Celtic folk. For the sake of convenience -- and for marketing purposes -- Lass has been described as new age, which is probably just as well because Sonnet is calm enough to appeal to the new age market. And when one sees words like "healing" in the liner notes, it is obvious that Lass is going after new age audiences. Although Sonnet is the violinist's first U.S. release, it isn't his first album -- before Sonnet, he recorded eight CDs that were released in Australia. If Sonnet is essentially new age -- and new age is as good a description as any -- it's important to know what type of new age it is. The term new age is a lot more far-reaching than it was in the '80s; it is used to describe everything from spacy, atmospheric, electronic sounds to rhythmic stuff with world music leanings. Sonnet is an example of the more classical-influenced new age, and even though the material falls short of mind-blowing, all of it is pleasant and sincere. ~ Alex Henderson
Martin began the violin (classically) at the age of eight, after being inspired by Yehudi Menhuin on a television special. (Some 12 ...
| | Darden Smith Circo CD (2004)
All-Time Greatest Hits songs
$12.39 Like the somber black-and-white photos of lonely back roads on the cover, singer/songwriter Darden Smith travels the darker byways of the human psyche. The music seldom escalates above a mid-tempo strum, but these tunes are so beautifully conceived, sung, and arranged that the album never stagnates or seems repetitious. Story songs like "Mill Creek" slither like alligators, building tension through an eerie stripped-down approach that arrives like a slow-moving thunderstorm. He doesn't sing these haunting tunes as much as whispers them into your ear, sounding like secrets that you share with him. Clever turns of phrases like "Make Love So Hard," which can be interpreted in a few ways, and "Shooting Star" (not the Bad Company hard-rocking hit) infuse this music with smart yet subtle impact. Steuart Smith, Kim Richey, Shawn Colvin, Jim Lauderdale, and Lloyd Maines all contribute, but nobody weakens the focus on Smith's gripping, predominantly acoustic tunes. Bleak but hopeful, this is an album made for quiet times and headphones, when the intricate arrangements and intelligent lyrics can be fully absorbed without distractions. Although Maines contributes occasional pedal steel, this is not country. Rather, the marvelous standup bass of Roscoe Beck injects a jazzy yet forlorn feel, taking ...
