Bruce Springsteen's debut album found him squarely in the tradition of Bob Dylan: folk-based tunes arranged for an electric band featuring piano and organ (plus, in Springsteen's case, 1950s-style rock & roll tenor saxophone breaks), topped by acoustic guitar and a husky voice singing lyrics full of elaborate, even exaggerated imagery. But where Dylan had taken a world-weary, cynical tone, Springsteen was exuberant. His street scenes could be haunted and tragic, as they were in "Lost in the Flood," but they were still imbued with romanticism and a youthful energy. Asbury Park painted a portrait of teenagers cocksure of themselves, yet bowled over by their discovery of the world. It was saved from pretentiousness (if not preciousness) by its sense of humor and by the careful eye for detail that kept even the most high-flown language rooted. Like the lyrics, the arrangements were busy, but the melodies were well developed and the rhythms, pushed by drummer Vincent Lopez, were breakneck. ~ William Ruhlmann
Hailed early on by Columbia producer and talent scout John Hammond as "the new Dylan," Bruce Springsteen has always shared many of the folky, poetic, word-savvy tendencies of his hero and predecessor. Nowhere is this more evident than on Springsteen's debut, GREETINGS FROM ASBURY PARK, NJ, which veritably bursts at the seams with lyrical invention, pell-mell imagery, and acoustic-guitar driven troubadour tunes. Yet Springsteen trades in on Dylan's pensive and bitter sides for dew-eyed optimism and exuberance.
While there is spare, folkie fare like "The Angel" and "Mary Queen Of Arkansas," on which Springsteen sings of his local New Jersey color in his uniquely passionate voice, there is also something fresh and irrepressible here. A rock & roll heart beats at the center of GREETINGS, with a spunk and spirit that push the whole affair along. "It's Hard To Be A Saint In The City" and "Growin' Up" are fueled by David Sancious's rollicking piano, wailing tenor sax, and Springsteen's husky voice. Together these elements defined a James Dean rebel persona and a giant rock & roll ambition that would guide Springsteen's music for the rest of his career.Rolling Stone (7/5/73, p.64) - "..influenced a lot by the Band..a Van Morrison tinge every now and then...what makes Bruce totally unique and cosmically surfeiting is his words...a bold new talent with more than a mouthful to say.." [Lester Bangs]

Greatest debut album of all rock history, Bruce and his band here were simply fantastic, playing wonderful songs with a sound coming from dirty streets. This is full of soul, blood and feelings, really a masterpiece.

Digitally remastered with 3 additional bonus tracks, & a special booklet. Personnel: John Lennon (vocals); David Spinozza (guitar); Michael Brecker (saxophone); Kenny Ascher (piano, organ, Mellotron); Jim Keltner (drums).
Audio Remixer: Peter Cobbin.

Arranger: John Lennon.
After the hostile reaction to the politically charged Sometime in New York City, John Lennon moved away from explicit protest songs and returned to introspective songwriting with Mind Games. Lennon didn't leave politics behind -- he just tempered his opinions with humor on songs like "Bring on the Lucie (Freda Peeple)," which happened to undercut the intention of the song. It also indicated the confusion that lies at the heart of the album. Lennon doesn't know which way to go, so he tries everything. There are lovely ballads like "Out of the Blue" and "One Day (At a Time)," forced, ham-fisted rockers like "Meat City" and "Tight A$," sweeping Spectoresque pop on "Mind Games," and many mid-tempo, indistinguishable pop/rockers. While the best numbers are among Lennon's finest, there's only a handful of them, and the remainder of the record is simply pleasant. But compared to Sometime in New York City, as well as the subsequent Walls and Bridges, Mind Games sounded like a return to form. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
On this disc, Lennon tackles his usual messages including love (of Yoko and mankind in general), peppy optimism in the face of dire circumstances, and humorous observations of crazy times and conditions. The breadth of his interests has always been gargantuan, and somehow when Lennon switches between the global focus of the title track to the personal "Yoko (I'm Sorry, I'm Sorry, Yoko)," he convinces us that these ...

Freakwater Old Paint CD  (1995)

Greetings From Asbury Park, NJ
CD $12.39  Audio Samples Definitive Album
Freakwater: Janet Beveridge Bean (vocals, guitar, percussion); Catherine Irwin (vocals, guitar); Bob Egan (pedal steel & steel guitars); Dave Gay (bass).
Additional personnel: Floss (electric guitar, fiddle); Poppy Brandes (cello); Joe Tech (piano).
Recorded at Idful Music, Chicago, Illinois in May 1995.
1995's OLD PAINT continues to support Freakwater's standing as one of the finest roots country bands on the scene. Despite their name, their following (comprised largely of indie rock fans), and their label (the post-rock-oriented Thrill Jockey), Freakwater create traditional, beautifully crafted old world country that--if not for the detail-rich, pristine production--could have been made in the 1940s or '50s.
OLD PAINT demonstrates all of these qualities in spades. Lilting vocals, lush harmonies, and softly strummed acoustic guitars are the primary ingredients, with additional instrumentation adding subtle color here and there. The spare, ...
