As proven by the band's sophomore effort, 1973's TYRANNY & MUTATION, Blue Oyster Cult had only hinted at its knack for penning gripping heavy metal with its 1972 self-titled debut. Whereas the debut did have moments where hard rock shined through the psychedelic haze, TYRANNY was the first BOC record to fully stress the band's metallic roots. The production team of Murray Krugman and Sandy Pearlman returned once again, this time helping BOC focus the intensity and power of its compositions by streamlining the vastness of the debut.
The opening track, "The Red & the Black," is a scorching rocker that brings to mind the uncontrollable energy of the punk rock that came a few years later (renowned punksters the Minutemen/fIREHOSE/Mike Watt proved this point by covering the track numerous times). BOC's penchant for hatching peculiar song titles continues, as proven by such tracks as "7 Screaming Diz-Busters," "Wings Wetted Down," "Teen Archer," and "Mistress of the Salmon Salt (Quicklime Girl)," all of which are album highlights.

Blue Oyster Cult Tyranny And Mutation Songs Tyranny And Mutation Music Review Average Rating: (4.2 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews The best of early BOC Of all the earlier BOC albums this one has to be the best. There is not one second of filler on this album. Roeser and Lanier complement each other many times like in Teen Archer, and Bloom's lyrics are awesome. Anyone who likes psychedelic, early 70's metal, this is an album you should own. Submitted by a reviewer (Crescent City, CA, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 1 of 1 found this helpful.

B.O.C. STOMPS LITTLE ROCK Well it's obvious our co-reviewer from Little Rock must have mistaken BOA for BOC. Perhaps he should stick with Black Oak Arkansas. "Tyranny & Mutation" is one of the premier hard rock albums of the early 70's. "Tyranny" shows BOC in their prime, with NO FLUFF, as our beloved friend in Fresno so aptly up it. Contrary to L.R., you CAN go back; in fact, music is one of the only ways you can. This is a must for any BOC fan, and CD Universe has it for the best price; as always! Can't go back I was a bit disappointed in this one. Make that extremely disappointed. The 24 bit remaster can't do a lot for a lame performance or some cheesey songwriting. Did these guys really believe that they spewing on these tracks? Doubtful. In my defense, I just had these vague memories of St. Louis radio station KSHE 95 playing "Hot Rails To Hell" back in '75 but it was sounding so much better then (under the influence?). I guess this purchase proves a couple of things. One, you can't go back and relive the past even if it's just reliving what you once thought was a great sound. Two, Barnum was right, there really IS one born every minute and I'm definitely feeling a bit wet behind the ears (for at least the last sixty seconds while writing this). Impulse buy! Definitely not recommended. Submitted by a reviewer (Little Rock, AR, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Simply the best BOC Before the over-production and arena rock hype set in, there was Tyranny and Mutation. Way back in 1973, BOC forged a path beyond the acid rock base provided by Black Sabbath. Taking the same creepy subject matter and adding in a frenetic guitar assault, BOC never played coy with the overtly dark nature of their songs.
The thing that strikes me most is that Sabbath and other bands got pilloried for their satanic overatures, while BOC blatantly flaunted their proclivities and suffered no backlash whatsoever. I guess we know who really had the Devil on their side!
Buy this CD if you want to experience top-shelf 70's rock with a side of very heavy occult leanings. And it do no harm, so shalt it be! Submitted by Drenlok (Chapel Hill, NC) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
