Boston: Brad Delp (vocals); Tom Scholz (guitar, organ); Barry Goudreau (guitar); Fran Sheenan (bass); Sib Hassian (drums). Recorded at Foxglove Studios, Watertown, Massachusetts; Capitol Studios, Hollywood, California; The Record Plant, Los Angeles, California between 1975 and 1976. Boston is one of the best-selling albums of all time, and deservedly so. Because of the rise of disco and punk, FM rock radio seemed all but dead until the rise of acts like Boston, Tom Petty, and Bruce Springsteen. Nearly every song on Boston's debut album could still be heard on classic rock radio decades later due to the strong vocals of Brad Delp and unique guitar sound of Tom Scholz. Tom Scholz, who wrote most of the songs, was a studio wizard and used self-designed equipment such as 12-track recording devices to come up with an anthemic "arena rock" sound before the term was even coined. The sound was hard rock, but the layered melodies and harmonics reveal the work of a master craftsman. While much has been written about the sound of the album, the lyrics are often overlooked. There are songs about their rise from a bar band ("Rock and Roll Band") as well as fond remembrances of summers gone by ("More Than a Feeling"). Boston is essential for any fan of classic rock, and the album marks the re-emergence of the genre in the 1970s. ~ Vik Iyengar Recorded on a simple 12-track recorder as a demo, it was so good that the record company released it. Tom Scholz masterminded the project in his spare time; little did he know that this record came to define AOR, and would become a hi-fi store standard demo disc. Since that time, this record-breaking debut has sold 15 million copies in its homeland. Sholtz put so much effort into making it, he has managed only three further records in 22 years. "More Than A Feeling" still chills in a corny sort of way and the harmonies are pretty impressive. Boston
$19.10 Essentially a harder-rocking reprise of Every Picture Tells a Story, Never a Dull Moment never quite reaches the heights of its predecessor, but it's a wonderful, multi-faceted record in its own right. Opening with the touching, autobiographical rocker "True Blue," which finds Rod Stewart trying to come to grips with his newfound stardom but concluding that he'd "rather be back home," the record is the last of Stewart's series of epic fusions of hard rock and folk. It's possible to hear Stewart go for superstardom with the hard-rocking kick and fat electric guitars of the album, but the songs still cut to the core. "You Wear It Well" is a "Maggie May" rewrite on the surface, but it develops into a touching song about being emotionally inarticulate. Similarly, "Lost Paraguayos" is funny, driving folk-rock, and it's hard not to be swept away when the Stonesy hard rocker "Italian Girls" soars into a mandolin-driven coda. The covers -- whether a soulful reading of Jimi Hendrix's "Angel," an empathetic version of Dylan's "Mama, You Been on My Mind," or a stunning interpretation of Etta James' "I'd Rather Go Blind" -- are equally effective, making Never a Dull Moment a masterful record. He never got quite this good ever again. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine NEVER A DULL MOMENT picks up where EVERY PICTURE TELLS A STORY left off. Here we have more raucous rock & roll with healthy dollops of soul and twang thrown in for good measure. Always looking for a good songwriter to cover, Stewart's honorees here include Jimi Hendrix ("Angel"), Dylan ("Mama You Been On My Mind"), and Rod's personal hero, Sam Cooke ("Twistin' The Night Away"). Sidling up nicely next to these heartfelt interpretations are some of Stewart's finest original songs. Teaming with spiritual brother ...

| | Halford III: Winter Songs CD (2009) Special Edition; Digipak
Boston
$15.55 Personnel: Rob Halford (vocals); Mike Chlasciak (guitar); Ed Roth (keyboards); Bobby Jarzombek (drums). Audio Mixer: Pete Martinez. Arrangers: Rob Halford; Ed Roth. At first glance, Halford's entry into the crowded holiday market looks like a parody. Heavy metal and Christmas make for strange bedfellows, and WINTER SONGS' pastoral cover art -- which depicts Rob Halford staring wistfully (with a goatee and shades) into a soft, snowy pine forest -- screams Spinal Tap. That said, the Judas Priest frontman approaches yuletide standards like "We Three Kings" and "What Child Is This?" with the same conviction that he applied to Priest classics like "Electric Eye" and "Freewheel Burning" -- it probably helps that most traditional Christmas hymns tend to fall into the same brooding minor keys that serve as the foundation for most, if not all, heavy metal songs. While WINTER SONGS, like Twisted Sister's excellent 2006 ...

| | Justin Bieber My World CD (2009) Enhanced CD
Boston
$7.96 Within a couple years, Canadian teenager Justin Bieber went from covering Usher on YouTube to working with Usher. An internet sensation from his renditions of several pop and pop-oriented R&B hits, he was still only 15 years old when he released this, his first album -- though it's more like an EP since it is contains only seven songs that are 25 minutes in duration. Given the comfort level he showed in the material he covered, My World plays it straight, based on the kind of age-appropriate content that would fill out a release from a younger Chris Brown or a junior version of Ne-Yo. Members of the Clutch, Midi Mafia, "Tricky" Stewart, ...

$10.65 Guitar/Drums Duo From France
Personnel: Steve Albini (drums). Additional personnel: Steve Albini. Chateauvallon starts with a doomy synth instrumental backed by crashing drum rolls that seem to have been lifted from an entirely different record. It's an intriguing opening, but it doesn't set the scene properly for what's to come. The French duo consists of a guitarist and a drummer, the former playing his instrument through four independent mic and amp setups at the same time and the latter marrying the twin poles of '70s hard rock muso tendencies: he plays with the swaggering intensity of John Bonham (dig the first third of the epic "Turbofonte") as well as the jazzy complexity of King Crimson's Bill Bruford. The drummer, Julien F., is the showboating star of the album, alternating between tricky grooves and arrhythmic free jazz freakouts, but Tony C.'s layered guitar sounds are perhaps the most intriguing aspect of Chateauvallon. The multiple setups create an effect not unlike Steve Reich's early tape-phase pieces or Robert Fripp's Frippertronics: similar sounds placed slightly out of sync with each other begin to form overtones that create a peculiarly fascinating overall sound. This is most fully explored on the ghostly closer, "Rauturo," an exercise in ambience and room sound that incorporates the feedback and hum of the amp setups, as well as the sound of Tony C. physically manipulating the ...
| | Craig Smith Nashville Sessions EP CD (2005)
Boston
$6.69 Craig Smith is a singer/songwriter type who sometimes plays in bands and lurks around the outskirts of Philadelphia and occasionally decides to focus on actually finishing a started project.THE NASHVILLE SESSIONS consists of four songs written and recorded over the span of seven days at the Opryland Hotel. To combat Smith\'s ability to repeatedly give in to distraction, this time was used as a retreat; an experiment in alternate tunings, impromptu lyric writing, playing and singing softly as to not annoy the neighbors...All in all, a lo-fi collection of four track demos for further embellishment and a snapshot of the moment of creativity when four songs were in their infancy.Even though the songs have previously been available to listen to and download for free, the physical product contains a nifty color cover which is neat to hold in your hands and study. It\'s a small handmade operation of limited numbers, each piece lovingly ...
| | Father Peter Bowes In The Hour Before Dawn CD (2004)
Boston
$12.15 Father Peter Bowes has devoted his life in service to God, and has served as a Priest and Master Teacher for over 20 years. He currently serves as Co-Director of the Order of Christ/Sophia, teaching and ministering to students throughout the country. Many of the elements of the Mystical Christian teachings of this Order can be heard in Father Peter's lyrics, encouraging the listener to discover the Truth within. (See www.orderofchristsophia.org). Father Peter demonstrated musical acumen from the earliest ages, receiving an invitation to join the Vienna Boy's Choir at the age of 12. He also picked up guitar at an early age, developing an ear for modern folk/pop melodies, and has been influenced by the likes of Paul Simon, James Taylor, Bob Dylan, and The Beatles. Living in Newport Rhode Island, home of the famous Newport Folk Festival, gave Father Peter the opportunity to hear and even learn from many of the major folk, blues, and folk and blues musicians of the late 60's and early 70's.Father Peter Bowes' latest release, "In The Hour Before Dawn", combines modern folk/rock music with the essence of ancient Christian Mystical experience, giving the listener a deep sensation of God's Divine presence. Father Peter leaves no question as to the message of his music or the motivation he seeks to instill in his audience. The clarity of Father Peter's voice in delivering simple and ingenious lyrics, over moving and inspirational melodies, succeeds in creating a unique body of work that vigorously compels and gently caresses the world to listen."In The Hour Before Dawn" invites the listener to connect with the music and allow Light to inundate the heart. In comparison to the minimalist approach used on his first CD, "Devoted To You", the arrangements on this release include cello, flute, drums, percussion, and background vocals, which compliment Father Peter's acoustic guitar and vocals well. The instrumentation adds depth to the music, and fills out the theme and timbre of the songs. Overall, the album applies timeless spirituality to plant a seed within each listener's heart, pour the water of God's love and the Light of Christ over it, and allow it to bloom into a full expression of God's divinity within us. The compositions span a wide range of musical structures, from devotional hymns and poignant ballads to pop/rock foot-stompers and joyous folk sing-alongs. Father Peter's varied, multi-textured fingerpicking technique lends flavors of blues, jazz, and rock to his classic folk style. His versatile voice rings clearly, and subtly weaves into the occasional minor key with grace. One can easily envision several of these songs covered in a variety of styles by multiple artists, in the way that classics such as Bob Dylan's "All Along the Watchtower" and The Beatles' "Come Together" have over the years. Ultimately, Father Peter's work marks the opening of a new chapter, the beginning of an era, the dawn of a new day in Christian music. Father Peter's works testify to the power of his vision, the clarity of his sight, the ...
