Personnel: Carole King (vocals, keyboards); James Taylor (acoustic guitar, background vocals); Robert "Waddy" Wachtel, Danny Kortchmar (guitar); Tom Scott (soprano & tenor saxophones); Leland Sklar (bass); Russ Kunkel (drums); Ralph McDonald (percussion); David Crosby, Graham Nash, J.D. Souther (background vocals). 1976's THOROUGHBRED was Carole King's last album for Lou Adler's Ode Records imprint, and it's clearly a transitional release. Change was afoot in the musical air in 1976, and while there's no hints of punk or disco on THOROUGHBRED--which is a good thing--King is definitely moving away from the solo piano sound of her earlier solo albums. King's thumping, percussive piano playing is still all over the album, but guitars play a more prominent role than ever before. At times, the instrumental interplay resembles that of Fleetwood Mac, particularly Waddy Wachtel's Lindsey Buckingham-like solo on "Only Love Is Real." The songs themselves are in the eclectic style of 1973's all-over-the-map FANTASY, with the country-tinged "We All Have To Be Alone" and "Ambrosia" sitting comfortably between the slinky pop of "I'd Like To Know You Better" and the soulful "Still Here Thinking of You."

$11.49 MY WORLD Jon GreavesThis album features songs that I wrote way back in the 1980's during my teens and early 20's. Although I have moved on slightly since those days and know that songs of this nature are never likely to spill out of my head again, I am still quite chuffed by what I produced during these rebellious times and it has been a lot of fun finally recording them. All the male vocals and instrumental backing was put down by myself on my Yamaha AW16 recording desk. The painting for the cover is also one of mine, in fact the only thing I couldn't do was the female backing vocals which were kindly donated by my good friend Angela Gardner. An overriding theme to the content seems to be my ongoing battle with those around me over my reluctance to apply myself to the type of education that involves classrooms, exams, grades and photos of graduation days. I left school at 16 without anything much to show for it and although I don't recommend this for everyone it doesn't seem to have done me much harm. I prefer to make my own way in life.I think the best way of describing this album is to go through it song by song and tell you a little bit about each one as I do so.Track 1. The Reluctant Gift, 1987: Here we go, straight in with a song that exemplifies what I was just talking about. The creative gift is something that I seem to have in abundance. The problem for me though was that as soon as it was discovered, people immediately started making plans to pack me off to art school or stage school. Trouble is, I didn't want to go. This song tries to explain those feelings as I recalled them when I wrote it and how it affected me.Track 2. Oh Woman, 1982: This one is a little embarrassing as it's one of those slushy love songs that you just know is going to destroy your street credibility but yet, you still somehow feel obliged to write it. On the other hand I have to admit I quite like the song and although it wasn't really written to anyone in particular it serves it's purpose in stating that even an old school blokey bloke can still have a few tender thoughts.Track 3. My World 1985: A song that describes exactly what the title would suggest. It has quite a powerful tune and at the time I didn't hold back on the lyrical content either. It was My World and this was the song that I wrote about what it's like to live in it.Track 4. The Dreamer, 1982: The first song I ever wrote and completed, based on an acquaintance of mine who was currently putting his life on hold in anticipation that fame and fortune was only just around the corner. The problem as I saw it was that he didn't really have much talent and I kind of knew that it wasn't going to happen. Since nearly thirty years later I still have yet to see him on TV it appears I was right.Track 5. I Believe In Me, 1982: The Dreamer may have been the first song I ever completed but this little ditty was actually bouncing about in my head from around the age of 14. Yet it was only completed years later once I learned to play a guitar. It was a protest really about people finding it all to easy to write me off. Of all the songs I've written this one is particularly poignant as years after it was finally completed, the predictions I made in it began to come true.Track 6. From Now On, 1986: And another one which says the same thing but uses a different tune and lyrics to do so. Basically that From Now On, I am going to live my life as I pleaseTrack 7. Tempted And Free But Unable, 1984: That age old scenario where a gorgeous young girl decides to make a play for you. You're both single and looking for love but there's one small technicality inasmuch as she is only 16 and just a wee bit to young. It is quite a haunting little piece and Angela's backing vocals in the second verse are absolutely spot on.Track 8. The Lost Friend, 1986: A strange little ditty that I found in my head one day where I encounter a familiar presence who takes me for a flight to his home which ...
