Blue Öyster Cult scored big with Agents of Fortune and its now-classic rock hit, "(Don't Fear) The Reaper." It took the album into the stratosphere and the band's profile with it; it put them in the visible pop space they'd tried for years to get to. But upon arrival, they found that kind of success difficult to respond to. Not only did the Cult want to respond, they wanted to cement their place. Spectres is not the masterpiece that Agents of Fortune is, but it didn't need to be. However, upon hearing Spectres again, the album offers proof that the commercial and creative bent of Agents of Fortune was still in place at certain moments, and the band laid out a major single in the opening cut, "Godzilla," a tune -- however silly it may be -- that is every bit as memorable as "(Don't Fear) The Reaper." It's not the only big number here either: "Goin' Through the Motions" and the truly spooky "I Love the Night" by Buck Dharma also scored. The former track is a wonderful blend of Tommy James & the Shondells, Boston, and Mott the Hoople's roots rock glam attack. Written by Eric Bloom and Ian Hunter, it's a stunning single. It sounds less like the Cult than anything they'd recorded, but as a classic rock & roll single it succeeds in spades. And "I Love the Night" (with its guitar part resembling "Reaper" for a moment) is one of rock & roll's truly strange and seductive love songs. There is more spook and darkness here, of course, in the album's closer, "Nosferatu." As a closer, "I Love the Night" may have been a better choice, but this track has all those layered harmonies, a reverbed piano, Dharma's power chords, and lyric fills that never lose their sense of menace and once more, a story. BOC were the only band in their league, walking the line between AOR rock and metal, and offering such detailed narratives. Spectres also contains tunes that were ready-made for touring, which is what the Cult did immediately after, resulting in the wildly successful live album Some Enchanted Evening. In sum, the only reason Spectres is not regarded as a classic is because it followed Agents of Fortune. Other than the false funk of "Searchin' for Celine," it's flawless as a finely tuned tome that begins with sci-fi humor and ends with gothic horror -- all of which can be hummed to. ~ Thom Jurek
Released during the year that punk broke, Blue Oyster Cult's sixth album was the important follow-up to the hugely successful AGENTS OF FORTUNE. SPECTRES found the group continuing to craft material that mated a trademark guitar-driven sound with intelligent lyrics. Although many short-sighted critics labeled the band heavy metal, this Long Island quintet was far more creative than this classification would suggest.
Although guitarists Eric Bloom and Buck Dharma dominate many of these songs with high-flying solos, the pristine harmonies of songs such as "Golden Age of Leather" and "Fireworks" are an often forgotten facet of Blue Oyster Cult's sound. Allen Lanier's keyboard contributions to SPECTRES are occasionally overlooked despite the fact that the album contains some of his best work. Lanier's influence can be heard on everything from the anthemic "R.U. Ready 2 Rock," a song where rollicking eighty-eights trade off with heavy guitar riffs, to the synths that make "Celestial the Queen" sound like the

4 stars Every bit as good as Agents Of Fortune
I bought this album because I feared it would go into the "Out Of Print" category, like so much other great groups CD's. Look at the price! I figured, "what do I have to Lose", you get Godzilla & R U Ready To Rock. It took a couple of times of listening to it, but it is one of BOC's best. "I Love The Night" is one of those songs, that I don't remember ever getting any air play, but is still a great song.

5 stars Blue Oyster Cult's Best Album
SPECTRES is Blue Oyster Cult's best album. The songs are all great, except for the last one, "Nosferatu." The band seemed to be moving away from darker rock towards a more pop-oriented style here, and the results are wonderful.

5 stars Excellent and underplayed
I'm a but new to the Cult but I do know that this is one of the finest rock albums of all time. BOC released this way back in 1977 and it has aged quite well. 1. Godzilla- 4/5 Although a good, rocking song, Godzilla is, along with stairway to heaven, one of the most overplayed songs in the history of rock. This doesnt make it bad though, it was a turning point in Blue Oyster Cult's career and I am thankfull for this. 2. Golden age of leather- 5/5 This may be one of the most underated songs in the cult's career. It is incredible all the way through; from the barber-shop-music beginning to the rocking end. 3. Death valley nights- 4/5 Another excellent track. This has great riffs from beginning to end. This has the epic feel of a conclusion song. 4. Searchin' for Celine- 4.5/5 This is a great track. It also shows the influence of the pop-culture at the time; it has a 'mild' disco beat through out but this doesnt make it cheesy, just more up-beat. 5. Fireworks- 3.5/5 Probably the weakest track on the album. But it isnt bad at all; some parts are interesting and pretty while others are simply boring. 6. R.U. ready 2 rock- 4.5/5 Another commercial hit but also a really original number. Live performances have out-done this version of the song with pure brute strength but this one is probably the smoothest. 7. Celestial the queen- 5/5 This is my personal favorite track on the album. It includes imaginative synthisizer, theme, and musicianship. Enough said. 8. Goin' through the motions- 4/5 This is an interesting little ditzy that has a late 60's melody to it. Probably the most out of place here but it is still a good listen. 9. I love the night- 4.5/5 I think that this song is technically the best here. This has a very dark, depressing feel to it. I dont know if it's just me but when I listen to BOC I get the feeling that I'm listening to Pink Floyd... 10. Nosferatu- 5/5 Finally at the end, we come to this incredible conclusion. Although this is a rather raw take, it is very melodic and depressing, never ommiting a chance at a soaring guitar run... I reccomend this album to beginners for the band and for people who listen to Pink Floyd.

5 stars a great album from b.o.c. that NEEDS REMASTERING !
spectres is a great album, in my opinion it is one of their best mid to late period efforts. this album along with mirrors, some enchanted evening, cultosaurus erectus,on your feet or onyour knees, fire of unknown origin, extra terrestrial live, and finally revolution by night need remastering treatment as soon as possible!

5 stars b.o.c. at their best
one of the upper echelon b.o.c. albums, even though if i hear godzilla one more time i'll vomit day-glo. other standouts include nosferatu, golden age of leather, death valley nights and celestial the queen, all top notch b.o.c songs filled with heavy, catchy music, bizarre lyrics and the overall feel that make blue oyster cult a unique oasis in a sea of corporate 70's rock

"From the rich percussive grooves of the short opener "Mo Drums," this live set from the Martha's Vineyard-based sextet positively exudes energy and good vibes. The band has a big joyous sound that reflects its underlying flair as reggae, Latin and African rhythms find their way into a myriad of textures. Strong hooks are laced with great vocals and crisp guitar work but it's the band's rhythmic power and vocals that are its strong points. They demonstrate this in the 11-minute "Mother Street," which begins with an almost Bo Diddley beat before sauntering off into more complex textures. Other standouts on this vibrant album are the fast-paced "Dancing in the Light" and the infectious title cut with its jazz-meets-reggae groove."- Mick Skidmore, Relix Magazine Entrain has received tremendous radio airplay of their first single, "Tarbosh (Dancin' in the Light)," from the album Can U Get It, now the music for the current Sylvania Light Bulb commercial running on national television as of 12/04.Over the last few years, Entrain has received regular rotation on over 200 radio stations across the country.
