Personnel: Andrew Ridgeley (vocals, guitar, electric guitar); George Michael (vocals, keyboards, background vocals); Hugh Burns (guitar, acoustic guitar, electric guitar); David Baptiste, Steve Gregory (saxophone); Colin Graham, Paul Spong (trumpet); Andy Richards, Tommy Eyre (keyboards); Trevor Murrell, Trevor Morrell (drums). Recording information: France (07/1984-09/1984). Photographer: Tony McGee. Arranger: George Michael. The title was a promise to themselves, Wham!'s assurance that they would make it big after struggling out of the gates the first time out. They succeeded on a grander scale than they ever could have imagined, conquering the world and elsewhere with this effervescent set of giddy new wave pop-soul, thereby making George Michael a superstar and consigning Andrew Ridgeley to the confines of Trivial Pursuit. It was so big and the singles were so strong that it's easy to overlook its patchwork qualities. It's no longer than eight tracks, short even for the pre-CD era, and while the four singles are strong, the rest is filler, including an Isley Brothers cover. Thankfully, it's the kind of filler that's so tied to its time that it's fascinating in its stilted post-disco dance-pop rhythms and Thatcher/Reagan materialism -- an era that encouraged songs called "Credit Card Baby." If this dichotomy between the A-sides and B-sides is far too great to make this essential, the way Faith later would be, those A-sides range from good to terrific. "Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go" is absolute silliness whose very stupidity is its strength, and if "Everything She Wants" is merely agreeable bubblegum, "Freedom" is astounding, a sparkling Motown rip-off rippling with spirit and a timeless melody later ripped off by Noel Gallagher. Then, there's the concluding "Careless Whisper," a soulful slow one where Michael regrets a one-night stand over a richly seductive background and a yearning saxophone. It was an instant classic, and it was the first indication of George Michael's strengths as a pop craftsman -- which means it points the way to Faith, not the halfhearted Edge of Heaven. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine Make It Big Music | List Price | $7.99 (You save $0.40) | | Category | Rock Albums, Pop CDs, Rock/Pop, New Wave | | Label | Columbia | | Orig Year | 1984 | | All Time Sales Rank | 2728 | | CD Universe Part number | 1086180 | | Catalog number | 39595 | | Discs | 1 | | Release Date | Oct 25, 1990 | | Studio/Live | Studio | | Mono/Stereo | Stereo | | Producer | George Michael | | Recording Time | 38 minutes |

Wham! - Their best times The 80's was Wham! best time. They came out with several songs that were on the radio all the time. It was in my country: Dominican Republic where I heard all their beautiful songs, specially Careless Whispers. Submitted by marxreynoso (Bronx, NY, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Why the hell this ? As a 48 year old dedicated but failed, guitarist/song writer from Andover, England, I have amongst my collection: Ziggy Stardust, Abbey Road, Hotel California, Dark side of the moon, Texas Flood, Sunburst Finish, Rumours, Plastic ono band, Against the grain, Revolver, Pet sounds, Hunky Dory, Mighty like a rose, High land hard rain, Ok computer... so why the hell Make it Big as my favourite album ever? I just love it, I met my wife with this album everywhwere. The guitar sound all through? Top songs with four or five absolute bloody classics? I just don't know. It just captured the moment. I'm not a George Michael fan these days, but as I strolled around with my capped T-shirts and my big hair, Wham! and this album were just it. Timmy Darling, Andover. (Troggs country) England. Wham's Best selling Album Before desolving Wham's Make It Big album is by far the best selling album the band created before George Micheals took on a solo career.
Their farwell concert before 72,000 fans who poured into London's Wembley Stadium to say goodbye to Messrs Panayioto and Ridgeley as Wham! played their farewell concert.
As half of bubblegum pop band Wham! (with Andrew Ridgeley), bronzed, big-haired George Michael (real name Georgios Panayioto) churned out disposable pop such as Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go as well as 1984's ultimate fashion statement, the Choose Life T-Shirt.
But they provided more than just an image of gleaming cleanliness - they gave a generation of multicultural youths their first real, it's hip to be hirsute, role models.
George and Andrew met on the first day of the school year in 1975 at Bushey Meads Comprehensive School.
Wham! were without doubt the biggest British act of summer 1983. Their album Fantastic stormed into the UK charts at Number 1 in July as the boys started their first major tour (sponsored by a sportswear company).
George Michael released his first solo album in November 1987. Faith was an impressive debut from Michael, who produced and played many of the instruments on the album himself. It was obvious that the former Georgios Panayioto had gone firmly for credibility since leaving his pal behind, and quickly established himself as a sophisticated singer and songwriter.
