It was clear early on in her recording career that Long Island's own Mariah Carey possessed a rare combination of qualities that would make her special. She had a commanding voice, an uncanny ear for a hit, commanding stage presence and an effervescent personality. She was, in short, an American pop diva just waiting to be discovered.

When her eponymous 1990 debut sold more than 12 million copies, it was clear Carey would become the pop queen she'd always dreamed she'd be. From the doo-wop-influenced opening track "Vision of Love" to the sweet, last-dance ballad "Love Takes Time," Carey's debut was one of biggest-selling records of the '90s. It was so popular, in fact, that four of the 11 tracks on the album hit #1 on the Billboard singles chart. MARIAH CAREY is Top 40 perfection with a remarkable young talent at the center of it all.

Recorded at Cove City Sound Studios, and Shakedown Studios, New York, New York.

"Dreamlover" was nominated for Best Pop Vocal Performance, Female in the 36th Annual Grammy Awards. "Hero" was nominated for Best Pop Vocal Performance, Female in the 37th Annual Grammy Awards. Mariah Carey's ascension to the top of the charts is an affirmation of her deep affection for the roots of popular music, to wit, gospel and R&B. She's not the first pop vocalist to find commercial and artistic bliss in black music, but her efforts are among the most heartfelt and convincing. And with the surehanded support of contemporary music's most creative producers and songwriters, Carey has developed a smooth, brassy sound signature all her own. What makes it all happen is that luminous, vaulting voice, one of the surest most impassioned instruments in all of pop, capable of leaps in register most vocalists can't even imagine, yet alone execute. Her dark ornaments and trilling upper register cries on "Dream Lover" make this plain. On power pop ballads like "Hero" and "Anytime You Need A Friend"--with their gospelish "To dream the impossible dream/The greatest love of all" cadences--Carey's over-the-top expressive range sparks these arrangements to one emotional catharsis after another. It is Carey's new found restraint--reining in her voice to suit the emotional fabric of each tune--that marks her growing maturity. The lush understatement of her singing and Walter Afanasieff's charts on the title tune, allow the tender grace of the song's lyrics to shine through--without superfluos vocal acrobatics. Ultimately it's Carey's reserves of vocal power, barely constrained on "Never Forget You" (with Babyface), that brings her fans back time and again. Engineers: Dana Jon Chappelle, David Gleeson, Manny LaCarrubba. Personnel: Mariah Carey (vocals, background vocals); Michael Landau (guitar); Walter Afanasieff (acoustic guitar, keyboards, synthesizer, bass synthesizer, Synclavier, programming); Dave Hall, David Beano Hall (keyboards, synthesizer, programming); David Cole

Mariah Carey
CD $7.45  4.6 stars Top 500 Audio Samples
All songs co-written by Mariah Carey except "Open Arms" (S. Perry/J. Cain). Samples included "Genius Of Love" (as performed by Tom Tom Club). DAYDREAM was nominated for 1996 Grammy Awards for Album Of The Year and Best Pop Album. "One Sweet Day" was nominated for Record Of The Year and Best Pop Collaboration With Vocals; "Fantasy" was nominated for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance; and "Always Be My Baby" was nominated for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance. On DAYDREAM, Mariah Carey's singing expands the panorama of its emotional release--her voice, having been a strictly powerful pure instrument, now taking on the thespian strategies of great vocalists. She has added subtle understatement to her bag of tricks. On the hit single "Fantasy," a groovin' piece of soulful pop based on a sample of the Tom Tom Club's "Genius Of Love," the chorus layers generous helpings of her voice. But rather than featuring the high-pitched lead she's famous for, the vocal parts reflect off each other in penetrating harmony. When she gets to cooing the key "I'm in heaven..." refrain as the fade-out hook, Carey's voice carries an enticing faux-innocence to match any of Madonna's good girl/bad girl come-ons. There is also her cover of Journey's "Open Arms," on which the a capella opening drifts into the stardust sound effects and the electric piano accompaniment, and the singer pours herself into a striking, minor-key declaration. There's also a more obvious modern R&B sheen to DAYDREAM than any of Carey's previous work. "One Sweet Day," her collaboration with Boyz II Men, sways with the sugary gospel cum synth-soul feel of the Philadelphia quartet's grandest romantic ballads. "Always Be My Baby," co-produced by Carey and Jermaine Dupri, expresses the simple, catchy melodic poise of the R&B girl-groups of the late 1950's and early '60s. And a Carey album wouldn't be complete without a track that rushes the listener onto the dance-floor. DAYDREAM'S nominee is David Morales' rolling "Day

"Butterfly" was nominated for a 1998 Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance. "Honey" was nominated for 1998 Grammy Awards for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance and Best R&B Song. A mature and contemplative Mariah Carey emerges as if from a chrysalis on her seventh album, displaying her now-familiar otherworldly vocal abilities tempered by a new restraint, as well as an infallible ear for irresistible rhythm-based, hook-laden music. BUTTERFLY's uptempo songs, including "Honey" and "Fly Away (Butterfly Reprise)," are flawlessly produced and catchy, and the title track soars with the spirit of independence and freedom. BUTTERFLY is full of such hopeful, uplifting moments, but it is equally infused with a deep sense of sadness and loss, as displalyed on the album's numerous ballads, most notably "Breakdown," a simple, honest song with a "Tears Of A Clown" motif, on which Carey sings of hiding her sadness from the world. Both joy and grief are explored on this album with equal tenacity. Engineers include: Dana Jon Chappelle, Rich Travali, Glen Marchese, Mike Scott, David Gleeson. Mariah Carey Glitter CD  (2001)

Mariah Carey
CD $7.99  4.3 stars Top 500
Looking to go down the vocal-diva-becomes-movie-star path blazed by Diana Ross, Madonna, and Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey teamed with Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis to executive produce the soundtrack to her film debut. Keeping with her character Billie, a struggling 1980s singer trying to break into the biz via the club scene, GLITTER has a handful of vintage dance covers given a modern twist. Chief among these interpretations are a vintage electro-funk reading of Cherrelle's "I Didn't Mean to Turn You On" and a hip-shaking version of the underground classic "Funkin' for Jamaica," renamed "Don't Stop (Funkin' for Jamaica)," that features Mystikal's rough-neck rapping. Mariah also represents her love of hip-hop with a groove-heavy remake of "Last Night a D.J. Saved My Life" featuring Busta Rhymes, Fabulous, and DJ Clue. Elsewhere, Billie's real-life alter ego rips through a number of ballads with her powerful pipes, including the piano-driven "Reflections (Care Enough)," the heartfelt "Lead The Way," and the show-stopping "Never Too Far." Mariah's collaborations with Cameo (the funk-pounding "Loverboy"), Ja Rule and Nate Dogg (the loping reggae jam "If We"), and Eric Benet (the mid-tempo workout "Want You") also appear on this crossover project. Personnel includes: Mariah Carey, Cameo, Ludacris, Da Brat, 22, Mystikal, Nate Dogg, Ja Rule, Fabulous, Eric Benet, DJ Clue, Busta Rhymes, Shawnna. Producers include: Clark Kent, Mariah Carey, Damizza, Jimmy Jam, Terry Lewis.

After Mariah Carey seemingly hit a creative and personal bottom between all her emotional upheaval, a lost label deal, and a flop film debut, CHARMBRACELET appeared to be the highly anticipated record that could very well decide whether she could regain her status in the pop world. Deliver The Word
War Deliver The Word CD  (1973)

Mariah Carey
CD $9.69  4.8 stars Top 500 Audio Samples
Originally released on United Artists (128-F) in August 1973. Recorded at Crystal Industries, Caribou Studios and Wally Heider Studio, Los Angeles, California. Includes liner notes by Barry Alfonso. Focusing in part on their softer side, War unleashed Deliver the Word in fall 1973. A smooth blend of the band's more progressive jazz-rock fusion, the LP shot to the top of the R&B charts, their second of four number one records in a row. It was a perfect tonic to the mediocre MOR music rampaging its way through the early part of the decade. The opening "H2 Overture" is a restrained jazz jam that gives way to "In Your Eyes," which keeps the progressive momentum going but adds unexpected vocal twists that vary from interesting spoken pleasures to full vocal harmonies -- it's sex on a groove. Both "Southern Part of Texas" and a long-awaited studio recording of "Baby Brother -- now titled "Me and Baby Brother" -- swing the band back to their alter ego cutting-edge funk stomp. "Gypsy Man," meanwhile, is a near-12-minute mantric, tantric opus whose blues riffs are pinned down only by the song's low, unyielding rhythm. It's a memorable slab of pure prog passed through Lee Oskar's stroboscopic brain. An outstanding album split between War's two definitive styles, Deliver the Word ultimately delivers a vibe, a groove, and an intent that are hard to resist. A magical ride with plenty of surprises to keep the listener on his or her toes, this set is a perfect example of the band at their genre-fusing best. ~ Amy Hanson War: Howard Scott (guitar, percussion, vocals); Charles Miller (clarinet, alto, tenor & baritone saxophones, percussion, vocals); Lee Oskar (harmonica, percussion, vocals); Lonnie Jordan (organ, piano, synthesizer, timbales, percussion, vocals); B.B. Dickerson (bass, percussion, vocals); Harold Brown (drums, percussion, vocals); Papa Dee Allen (conga, bongos, percussion, vocals). Producers: Jerry Goldstein, Lonnie Jordan, Howard Scott.
Ray
Ray CD  (2004) Bonus DVD; Limited Edition

Mariah Carey
CD $25.59  5 stars Audio Samples
This release includes a bonus DVD featuring music performance footage, a movie trailer, and a photo gallery. Even though RAY, the 2004 biopic featuring Jamie Foxx as Ray Charles, hit the theaters after the singer's death, Charles was heavily involved in the process of putting the film together, and co-produced the soundtrack. Consequently, the album functions as an extremely effective primer on the genre-transcending musical giant's career. As one might expect, it's heavy on Brother Ray's late-1950s/early-'60s salad days, digging into the gospel-inflected fervor of "I've Got a Woman," the gritty R&B of "Mess Around," and the soul-wracking distress call that is "Unchain My Heart." A number of live cuts are included as well, demonstrating the spontaneous invention that was part and parcel of Charles's gift, as on the jubilant "Hallelujah I Love Her So" and raw, sensual "What'd I Say." Ray's majestic way with a ballad is heard on two versions of his signature tune "Georgia on My Mind," and his pioneering R&B/country crossover work is ably represented by a live take on the sorrowful Eddy Arnold tune "You Don't Know Me." While there's no shortage of extant Charles anthologies, fans of the movie who take the soundtrack route to discovering the Genius's music will certainly not be short-changed. This soundtrack gathers 17 of Ray's original master recordings that Jamie Foxx lip synched in the film 'Ray'. Included are such classics as "Hit The Road, Jack," "Georgia On My Mind," and "I Can't Stop Loving You." Included is a bonus DVD (NTSC Code 0) that features five videos 'Mary Ann', 'Night Time Is The Right Time', ' What'd I Say', 'Hard Times (No One Knows Better Than I', 'Unchain My Heart' plus a movie photo gallery for 'Ray'. Ultimate Hip-Hop 30th Anniversary
Ultimate Hip-Hop 30th Anniversary CD  (2005) (Import)

Mariah Carey
CD $8.05
First off, Madacy's Ultimate 16: Ultimate Hip Hop 30th Anniversary isn't really very ultimate. No hip-hop collection with tracks by Snow ("Informer") or Rick James ("Loosey's Rap") could be considered such. The rest of the disc comes pretty close to being awesome, though, with old-school jams like Afrika Bambaataa & Soulsonic Force's "Planet Rock" and Kurtis Blow's "The Breaks" snuggled up against more recent classics like Das EFX's "They Want EFX," De La Soul's "Me, Myself & I," Coolio's "Fantastic Voyage," and Digital Underground's "The Humpty Dance." Still, there are better rap collections out there that cover a wider range of styles (and don't include two songs by Naughty by Nature and none by Public Enemy or Run-D.M.C. to name a couple), so this collection comes off as too scattered and lightweight to be of much use. ~ Tim Sendra

Octavia Harris Radical Sabbatical CD  (2007)

Mariah Carey
CD $16.45
CAPSULE REVIEWOctavia Harris, Radical Sabbatical One thing is clear from listening to the Portland based rapper, R&B singer and multi-talented hip hop artist’s high impact mix of heavy thumping grooves, old school soul atmospheres and hard hitting lyrics: Harris has truly been delivered from darkness in her life, and is excited about sharing her glorious coming out party and newfound joy of the Lord with the world. Over the course of fourteen completely infectious, soul-stirring tracks produced by some of the hip-hop world’s top studio cats (Doc Sizzo, F Major, Al Fraser, Sharpsounds, Ansane Productions, Hy-grade and others), she shares her deliverance in both personal and universal ways. The first lines of the opening title track say it all: “It’s a new day…it’s a new me.” She raps about spending more time with “the God who was living on the inside of me” and on “Enjoy The Sun” explores her wonder at the majesty of God’s mysterious creation. Beyond sharing the gospel message and the story of her own redemption, Harris also creates, on tracks like “For The Ladies,” powerful empowerment messages for females who struggle with their self esteem. The grooves and melodies flow seamlessly so the listener can focus on the message. While younger fans can enjoy the hard hitting danceable beats, Harris also taps into the classic R&B vibe on liquid soul tracks like “Different Kinda Love,” which almost find her channeling the cool, seductive spirit of Curtis Mayfield. You’ll want to take a sabbatical with this infectious, potentially life transforming album. –Jonathan Widran (freelance writer)
