Recorded live at Osaka Festival Hall, Osaka, Japan on February 1, 1975. Includes liner notes by Lee Jeske.
Digitally remastered by Larry Keyes (CBS Records Studios, New York, New York).
Often derided or misunderstood during the time of their original release, Miles Davis' numerous releases following BITCHES BREW are now recognized for their startlingly unconventional beauty. Drawing on rock and funk, Miles unflinchingly followed his muse into the subtle dynamics to be found in hypnotically relentless repetition overlaid with fiery soloing.
This hundred-minute, two-disc set was recorded live in Japan in 1975 and finds Miles trading solos with saxophonist Sonny Fortune over an undulating rhythm thicket of two guitars, electric bass, drums and conga/percussion. Miles punctuates the proceedings and takes the ensemble on abrupt turns in the road with organ stabs and swells. Not for the faint of heart, this is as bracing and dazzling as waves breaking over a spit of shoreline, or fireworks exploding on all sides of you at once.

Took me a long time to check this out, but... It was worth it! I always loved In a Silent Way and other fusion from Miles. But people always told me this album was too dissonant. Finally, i decided to get it anyway. Excellent choice, because it isn't in fact any more dissonant than his other fusion work, and it grooves effortlessly. Seriously, the funk here is as thick as you'll ever hear! Pete Cosey is the centrepiece here-an astounding guitarist who i had until now been ignorant of. Listen and you'll see what i mean. Outstanding live jazz/funk/fusion. Submitted by Tighearnan O Floinn (Dublin, Ireland) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Miles pentultimate sessionfrom the mid seventies Miles was in Japan for a couple of sessions that turned out to be his last for a while. He had been one of the most prolific artists during the seventies, and to this point released an impressive set of double albums that surely tested the patience and wallets of his legion of die hard fans. Obviously not all Davis post Bitches Brew music was perfect. Some was good and some was mediocre and even testing but Davis pressed on and tossed out albums like he was giving away candy but at least we can't complain about the lack of his music at this time, or at any time. Too many artists left behind too little but Miles was on the ball as he keep on his feet and constantly unleashed a flow of fusion until this time in 1975. Agharta is better album that the previous live Miles. In Concert: At The Philharmonic Hall was a tedious mesh of capable musicians uncapable of turning it on. Agharta turns on the funk and spreads it over two albums. Sure it must have been a nightmare to edit and some of tends to ramble in traditional Davis style but it grooves too good to dislike. Never that exciting or explosive but the band are gelling, the emotion is saturating and the mood is entrancing. What the listener gets is a mix of Davis past few years work thrashing around like a busy New York street. Snippets of On The Corner and Jack Johnson are at least audible and much more besides. Davis puts on a decent show, it was his penultimate gig for a while so who could blame him. If lacking a little ingenuity there is plenty of passion, much aggression even, on Agharta. A good live effort. Submitted by philip Bourke (Cork, Ireland) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
listen guys and gals to the best Hey listeners, I have reviewed this CD once before. I now have the super enhanced remix from Japan - WOWWWWWW! This always was good however now all the subtleties are captured and it is like listening to a new recording. I paid $40 for this - it is worth every cent until Sony decide to get their rear in gear. If you get the chance to purchase this, buy the Japanese remix in preferance to the US & UK mix. It will blow your mind and don't Pete Cosey and Reggie Lucas deserve stellar status for their work on this. YES YES YES! Submitted by a_lankester (exeter, uk) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Agharta CD music
$15.95 Recorded between 1970 and 1974. Includes liner notes by Dave Liebman.
Digitally remastered by Seth Foster (Sony Music Studios, New York, New York).
By 1974, Miles Davis had become not only a music legend in general and a jazz legend in particular, but also a reclusive and confounding character. Davis' music had excited many and exasperated others, including many of his older fans, with its forays into space-age free-form meta-funk. Released in ...

| | Ian McLagan Rise And Shine CD (2004)
Agharta songs
$10.15 While Rod Stewart has been a wimp for decades, and his latest attempts at being Frank Sinatra are pathetic, the rowdy spirit of the Faces lives on in the tough, bluesy, rock & roll swagger of Ian McLagan. Rise and Shine is his sixth album, and is easily his finest. First there's the band, composed of guitar slingers Gurf Morlix and Scrappy Jud Newcomb, bassist George Reiff, and drummer Don Harvey. Add Mac's rootsy keyboards, and selective backing vocals by Patty Griffin (paying Mac back, no doubt, for playing on her wondrous Impossible Dream album) and what you have is an unbeatable combination. There are 11 tracks here ranging from the strolling pub rock-drenched country soul of "Date With an Angel," the pumped up rock & roll of "You're My Girl," the bluesy piano roll and pop of "Been a Long Time," the shimmering late-night balladry of "Anytime," the Jerry Lee Lewis infused "Your Secret," the bottleneck slide guitar and piano torchiness of "Lying," to the stomping barroom rock of "Rubies in Her Hair," it's all raw, up front, in your face, rollicking greasy good-time music done by a master. Rise and Shine crackles with an energy that once was the lifeblood of all rock & roll. This is an album that belongs on the shelf next to the Faces' material to be sure, ...

Agharta CD music
$15.29 Most jazz aficionados will rank Anita O'Day as one the very best vocalists that the genre had to offer in the 1940s and 1950s. Her satiny tone, natural sense of rhythm, and improvisational skills placed her alongside the elite voices of the day. Manhattan Transfer's Cheryl Bentyne recognizes O'Day's vocal contributions by paying tribute to the singer on her second Telarc Jazz release, Let Me Off Uptown. For those familiar with both O'Day and Bentyne, the pairing of the vocalists is ...
