Recorded live at the Village Vanguard, New York, New York on December 11 & 12, 1976. Includes liner notes by Robert Palmer.
Digitally remastered by Mark Wilder (CBS Records New York Studios, New York, New York).
A double-disc document of the legendary saxophonist's gig at the Vanguard in 1976 (commemorating his return from a 15-year residence in Copenhagen), HOMECOMING captures Gordon in outstanding form. Well-seasoned and displaying elements of a more adventurous, experimental approach than was evidenced in his earlier recordings, Gordon wildly riffs through 12-bar blues ("Gingerbread Boy," "Backstairs") and creates modern, modal explorations in trumpet player Woody Shaw's two compositions ("Little Red Fantasy," and "In Case You Haven't Heard").
The classic Gordon is here as well, however--the gorgeous, commanding tone, the richly-considered phrases and warm inflection. In the bright, conversational "Fenja" and in his signature number "Body and Soul" (a piece Gordon may be able to lay claim to more than any other saxophonist save Coleman Hawkins) his playing is at once familiar and newly impressive. The live energy is palpable throughout and the combo provide solid, focused support. A varied, meaty and seductive set, HOMECOMING is an excellent summation of the career of one of jazz's best-loved horn players.
Personnel: Dexter Gordon (tenor saxophone); Woody Shaw (trumpet, flugelhorn); Ronnie Matthews (piano); Stafford James (bass); Louis Hayes (drums).
Producer: Michael Cuscuna.

Homecoming: Live At The Village Vanguard album
$7.59 "The Midnight Blues" was nominated for a 1999 Grammy for Best Instrumental Composition.
Wynton Marsalis has often spoken of his interest in and love of the playing the music of Louis Armstrong, but here he seems to be more in tune with the spirit of Harry James. In each of these 12 arrangements for string orchestra and rhythm section, Marsalis is out ...
| | VH1 Presents The Corrs Live In Dublin CD (2002)
Homecoming: Live At The Village Vanguard CD music
$6.39 This audio document of The Corrs' Dublin homecoming concert has pretty much everything fans of Irish pop could wish for, including an appearance from Bono in his earthly incarnation, fresh from an audience with President George W. Bush. It's to the band's credit that the charismatic singer fails to steal the show, despite creditable efforts via an anthemized version of Ryan Adams' beautifully downtempo "When the Stars Go Blue," ...

Homecoming: Live At The Village Vanguard music CDs
$8.69 Gerry Mulligan's 1959 studio date with Johnny Hodges is one of the most satisfying sessions of his various meetings with different saxophonists for Verve, yet it was inexplicably the last to be made available on CD. With a hand-picked rhythm section consisting of pianist Claude Williamson, bassist Buddy Clark, ...

| | Green Day International Superhits! CD (2001)
Homecoming: Live At The Village Vanguard music CDs
$10.29 Filling in grunge's fading pop appeal, Green Day and peers Offspring and Rancid kicked off a neo-punk revolution in the mid-90s still reverberating seven years later with bands like Blink-182 and Fenix TX. INTERNATIONAL SUPERHITS is a compact overview of the band's career-making major label run starting with 1994's DOOKIE right up to new songs like the rambunctious "Maria" and choppy charm of "Poprocks And Coke" recorded specifically for this compilation.
D.I.Y. to the core, Billie Joe Armstrong, Mike Dirt and Tre Cool clung to K.I.S.S. (Keep It Simple Stupid) best exemplified by the straightforward punk of "Jaded". Basic ingredients include punchy guitar chords, undeniable hooks and tight harmonies that can be heard in ...

Homecoming: Live At The Village Vanguard songs
$15.89 Ryan Oliver is one of many promising Canadian jazz musicians to emerge on the scene at the dawn of the 21st century, joined by four of his countrymen for his solid recording debut as a leader. "Tune for Bernie" is his delightful reworking of Bernie Miller's "Bernie's Tune" (made famous by Gerry Mulligan in the early '50s) which also salutes his pianist on the session (veteran Bernie Senensky), while his turbulent "Solidarity" is a driving post-bop vehicle. Oliver also proves effective as an interpreter of ballads like "It's Easy to Remember" ...
