As the second album to document the second Mahavishnu Orchestra, this one isn't as, well, apocalyptic as its predecessor, yet it does focus more intently on the band itself. Jean-Luc Ponty's curling electric violin lines help give this Mahavishnu band a more European sound than its predecessor, and some of the orchestral concepts of Apocalypse work their way into the picture via comments by a string trio and trumpet/sax duo. This band also had some interest in a bombastic funk direction that may have been borrowed from Mr. "Chameleon" Herbie Hancock, and would later be followed by Mahavishnu Two's drummer, Michael Walden. Gayle Moran's ethereal vocals don't date as badly as those on many jazz-rock records; at least she can sing. Overall, this Mahavishnu edition is more refined and not as aggressive as the first -- although they could charge ahead pretty hard, as "Be Happy" and "On the Way Home to Earth" demonstrate -- yet they were still capable of making memorable electric music. ~ Richard S. | Visions Of The Emerald Beyond Music Visions Of The Emerald Beyond Music Review Average Rating: (4.8 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews Still fresh after 30 years I owned this on vinyl in the seventies, was blown away by it then and just purchased it again on CD. It still blows me away nearly 30 years later. A must have for the McLaughlin enthusiast. Submitted by chadw (Austin, Tx. USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Fantastic John MacLaughlin and his Mahavishnu Orchestra are probably the best you can get when it comes to Progressive Rock.
And in "Visions Of The Emerald Beyond", John managed to choose the best team that has ever joined him to represent the Mahavishnu Orchestra.
Extreme good taste. I love it. Fantastic. Submitted by a reviewer (São Paulo - Brazil) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Search over With this recording, the Mahavishnu Orchestra reached a new peak. After the amazing 'Inner Mounting Flame' launched their arrival, the band went into overdrive and burned out after only a few of albums, but McLaughlin's experimentation and search for the right blend of rock, classicism and spirit went on. The classical orchestra used on 'Apocalypse' was whittled down to just three string players, and 'Visions..' captures the elusive blend perfectly. Dreamy open spaces with strings and vocals, stellar guitar work, punchy bass from Ralphe Armstrong and soaring violin from Jean-Luc Ponty make this a landmark album. Great Great, wonderful, whatever words you want to say. One of THE most underated albums ever. Submitted by carlos santana (Bury Lancashire England) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Good, but... Excellent playing, complex and interesting compositions, but WAY too much of an appeal to commercial interests with this album. Clearly an attempt to "mainstream" MO's music, with some lyrics that have to rank as the silliest stuff I've heard in a long time. You can't really fault them, other fusion bands were looking for the same commercial appeal at the time of this release, too. Buy it for your MO collection, but don't expect it to be your favorite. $14.79 Among the most controversial recordings in the history of jazz, BITCHES BREW was Miles Davis' shot across the bow of jazz insularity, a bold statement about jazz's ability to draw upon elements of popular culture, without mitigating its spirit of spontaneous invention. Much as Ornette Coleman's THE SHAPE OF JAZZ TO COME set a new standard for harmonic and melodic freedom a decade before, BITCHES BREW signaled a sea change in jazz.
Davis became a lightning rod for jazz's transformation, by mixing the best elements of '60s free jazz with dancing funk rhythms, electric rock textures, blues phrasing and his own breakthroughs in harmony and modality. Davis employed the Electric Flag's Harvey Brooks to double up with upright bassist Dave Holland on the Fender ...

Visions Of The Emerald Beyond music CDs
$10.15 Within the first 30 seconds of "Spiritual Eternal," the opening track on Alice Coltrane's final studio album, Eternity, the listener encounters the complete palette of Alice Coltrane's musical thought. As her organ careens through a series of arpeggiated modal drones, they appear seemingly rootless, hanging out in the cosmic eternal. And they remain there ever so briefly until an entire orchestra chimes in behind her in a straight blues waltz that places her wondrously jagged soloing within the context of a universal everything -- at least musically -- in that she moves through jazz, Indian music, blues, 12-tone music, and the R&B of Ray Charles. This is the historical and spiritual context Alice Coltrane made her own, the ability to open up her own sonic vocabulary and seamlessly enter it into an ensemble context for an untold, unpredictable expression of harmonic convergence. While many other players have picked up on it since, Coltrane's gorgeous arrangements and canny musical juxtapositions never seem forced or pushed beyond the margins. Perhaps, as evidenced by "Wisdom Eye," "Om Supreme," and the "Loka" suite, it's because Coltrane already dwells on the fringes both musically and spiritually, where boundaries dissolve ...

Visions Of The Emerald Beyond songs
$13.79 During breaks from drum duties with the Rolling Stones, Charlie Watts used his time wisely by forming a band that could provide an outlet for his deep knowledge and love of jazz, especially bop. Watts assembled some of the U.K.'s finest musicians for this tentet, including bandleader, composer, arranger, and alto and soprano saxophonist Peter King, trumpeter, flügelhornist, and arranger Gerard Presencer, and the innovative avant-garde hero Evan Parker on tenor and soprano saxophones. The musical ground they covered over three nights in June 2001 at Ronnie Scott's club in London was captured on the Sanctuary double-disc Watts at Scott's. These 15 tracks provide an ample showcase for lyrical soloing and lively ...
