Alice In Chains: Layne Staley, Jerry Cantrell (vocals, guitar); Michael Starr (bass); Sean Kinney (drums).
Additional personnel: Tom Araya (background vocals).
Recorded in 1992.
Dirt is Alice in Chains' major artistic statement and the closest they ever came to recording a flat-out masterpiece. It's a primal, sickening howl from the depths of Layne Staley's heroin addiction, and one of the most harrowing concept albums ever recorded. Not every song on Dirt is explicitly about heroin, but Jerry Cantrell's solo-written contributions (nearly half the album) effectively maintain the thematic coherence -- nearly every song is imbued with the morbidity, self-disgust, and/or resignation of a self-aware yet powerless addict. Cantrell's technically limited but inventive guitar work is by turns explosive, textured, and queasily disorienting, keeping the listener off balance with atonal riffs and off-kilter time signatures. Staley's stark confessional lyrics are similarly effective, and consistently miserable. Sometimes he's just numb and apathetic, totally desensitized to the outside world; sometimes his self-justifications betray a shockingly casual amorality; his moments of self-recognition are permeated by despair and suicidal self-loathing. Even given its subject matter, Dirt is monstrously bleak, closely resembling the cracked, haunted landscape of its cover art. The album holds out little hope for its protagonists (aside from the much-needed survival story of "Rooster," a tribute to Cantrell's Vietnam-vet father), but in the end, it's redeemed by the honesty of its self-revelation and the sharp focus of its music. [Some versions of Dirt feature "Down in a Hole" as the next-to-last track rather than the fourth.] ~ Steve Huey
Brutal and hard but exciting and surprisingly melodic, DIRT made Alice In Chains national stars in 1992 after being around the Seattle alternative rock scene for many years. They produce a blindingly together sound, with the bass of Mike Starr able to switch between following the bass drum beat and cloning Jerry Cantrell's guitar note for note, albeit a few octaves lower. They have such polish that they are often reminiscent of the heyday of Led Zeppelin. Lyrically they plow the familiar angst furrow with tracks such as 'Junkhead', 'Sickman' and 'God Smack'. Equally satisfying are 'Them Bones' and 'Rooster', which saw them start in a direction that led to Jar Of Flies two years later.

Spin (11/92, p.114) - Recommended - "...There's a brutal, though troubling, honesty in the lyrics...as a means of cutting yourself open and letting the listener look inside, Alice In Chains has certainly spit out a mouthful..."
Entertainment Weekly (10/16/92, p.76) - "...The pain and insight that went into these 12 songs make Alice In Chains shine above and beyond most of its Seattle neighbors..." - Rating: A
Q (2/02, p.120) - 4 stars out of 5 - "...DIRT's layered harmonies and fashionable nihilism transformed AIC from sludge metal also-rans to short-lived stars of the post-grunge landscape..."
Alternative Press (3/93, p.40) - "...a big leap forward from 1990's FACELIFT. Where the latter was buried deep under water, DIRT surfs with abandon..."
Vox (12/92, p.63) - 8 - Very Good - "...At their best guitarist Jerry Cantrell's towering riffs and singer Layne Staley's impassioned caterwaul make for a dramatic, vital dose of New Metal..."

4 stars Brutally Awesome
Back before days of pre-manufactured pop, Alice emerged from the Seattle scene to take the world on with these hard hitting, excellently crafted songs. Lyrics based in Layne's heroin addiction... and the foggy murky guitars of Jerry Cantrell... this cd delivers more bang for the buck than anything that followed. while Billy Corgan and his girls birthed emo... AIC served up rock the way it should be served... Loud... In your face... and honest A surprise from Seattle (they were known as "kinder - garden" locally) they weren't given much of a shot... and took the opportunity by the throat... positively slaying the Lollapalooza audiences that year. "Would" has to be one of the most hauntingly moving songs of all time

5 stars Grunge's Finest
This is by far Alice In Chain's best cd (no disrespect to Facelift) and also the greatest grunge cd ever created. Ten, Nevermind and Core are other grunge greats, but they fall short of being as great as AIC's Dirt. There is not a flaw on this cd, every single song is excellent especially Them Bones and Junkhead.

5 stars Brilliant.
Dirt is without a doubt one of the top four albums to have come out of the grunge movement. While I personally prefer Nevermind and Ten, Dirt offers a unique experience that carved Alice In Chains a prominent niche in the scene that they had helped to create. The album can best (and perhaps only) be described as dark, and it paints a chilling picture indeed of addiction and isolation. It also has very good balance within the tracks: Hearing catchy, radio-friendly songs such as Them Bones, Down in a Hole, Rooster, and Would? allows for greater overall accessablility of the album and makes it listenable for a much longer time, while tracks such as Sickman, Junkhead, Dirt and Angry Chair establish its general mood and allow for a detailed portrait of what pain is really like. To support this, consider some of the lyrics: "Lonliness is not a phase, field of pain is where I graze...", "I want you to scrape me from the walls, and go crazy like you've made me...", or "See my heart, I decorate it like a grave...". Seeing these words may not mean anything to a person, but hearing them as Layne injects them into your system leaves a very significant mark on your mood, even if only for the duration of the album. It promises to please those who give it a chance and are ultimately able to relate to it. That said, I would definitely recommend Dirt to Grunge fans, rock fans, music fans, or anyone who's ever felt as though they lacked the desire to carry on through another day.

Dispelling rumors of their demise due to Layne Staley's heroin addiction, Alice in Chains is a sonically detailed effort that ranks as their best-produced record, and its best moments are easily some of their most mature music. Alice in Chains relies less on metallic riffs and more on melody and texturally varied arrangements than the group's previous full-length ...

CHRONO CROSS, the sequel to the SNES favorite CHRONO TRIGGER, is one of the most ambitious role-playing games ever made. There are over 40 playable characters, each with their back-story, special moves, abilities, and weapons. The story spans two discs and follows the story of Serge, a young man who is able to cross dimensions. Suddenly he is pulled between worlds, trying to figure out his own past at the same time. The graphics are bright and beautiful, utilizing the PlayStation's capabilities to the fullest. The polygonal character models are huge and detailed, and the pre-rendered backgrounds are immaculately detailed. The music is composed and arranged by Yasunori Mitsuda, and features very realistic-sounding synthesizers. The battle system revolves around Elements, which are used to grant magical powers, as well as to summon huge monsters. For anyone that wanted to see the story of CHRONO TRIGGER continue, this is your chance.
Key Features
  • Turn-based role-playing game
  • Sequel to popular Chrono Trigger
  • More than 40 characters
  • Has branching story line with multiple ending
  • Choose between 3 levels of attack
Bridge
Ace Of Base Bridge CD  (1995)

Dirt
CD $6.29  4 stars Audio Samples
Ace of Base's sequel to their multi-platinum debut The Sign sounds like the same record on the surface. There are the same bouncy Europop beats, ingratiatingly catchy melodies, and shiny production. However, underneath that gloss is an improved sense of songwriting. Ace of Base still might not be innovators, but they don't need to be. Instead, they turn out tightly constructed pop songs that are better written than they appear -- songs like the hit "Beautiful Life" would sound good in different arrangements or if they were performed acoustically. And the songs on The Bridge are, overall, better than the ones on The Sign. Ace of Base might not be able to replicate the phenomenal success of their debut, but they have managed to deliver an album that is just as satisfying. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
THE BRIDGE is another chewy hour of bubblegummy Europop that hews close to the one with which this brother-and-sister act put Sweden back on the international pop map in 1994. No stylistic breakthroughs, no daring rushes to the edge of pop's sphere, no deep personal outpourings--just delectable beats and undeniable hooks that apply thinner to Abba's wall-of-sound ...
