This is part of the Columbia 16 Most Requested Songs series. 16 Most Requested Songs is a mid-priced collection that spotlights many of Billie Holiday's best-known and most popular performances for Columbia Records, including "Body and Soul," "The Way You Look Tonight," and "Easy Living." 16 Most Requested Songs is far from a perfect retrospective of her total career, but it is a nice sampler of good performances and songs by famous songwriters. However, a casual fan who only wants the hits might want to track down First Issue: Great American Songbook or a collection with more and better-known songs. ~ JT Griffith This well--documented and interestingly notated collection of earlier Holiday material includes the enjoyably weird detail of how high each of these tunes went on the charts and how long each lasted there. It's actually a fine reminder that musicians like Holliday and her stellar bandmates were once real live popular musicians, playing nightclubs, selling records, and probably too busy making a living to wonder how their prewar recordings would eventually stackup against their postwar work. For Holiday is one of those musicians, much like her foil Lester Young, whose efforts seem to fall into such categories, and of these 16 MOST REQUESTED SONGS, all but one fall into the prewar category. While the image for many people is of Holiday the drug--ravaged diva, struggling through the sheer pain of existence to cough up one more world--weary performance, her early work displays a clarity, freshness and flexibility that dovetails perfectly with the musicians around her. And Holiday was fortunate enough to be matched with cream of the swing era; these recordings bristle with first--rate musicians, including Teddy Wilson, Benny Goodman, Harry Carney, Johnny Hodges, Ben Webster, Buck Clayton, Lester Young, and the Basie rhythm section. 16 Most Requested Songs Music Billie Holiday 16 Most Requested Songs Songs | 1. | Miss Brown to You - (with Teddy Wilson & His Orchestra) | $0.99 | |

$20.49 FRIENDS & ENEMIES contains the LPs WITH FRIENDS LIKE THESE (1979) and WHO NEEDS ENEMIES (1983), plus an unreleased live album from 1984 as well as new material recorded in 1999. Personnel: Fred Frith (acoustic & electric guitars, violin, piano, organ, marimba, 4- & 6-string basses, drum programming); Henry Kaiser (acoustic & electric guitars, banjo, electric sitar, piano, 6-string bass, drum programming). Recorded at Mobius Music and Wolfgangs, San Francisco, California; McCabe's, Santa Monica, California; Kuuwumba Jazz Society, Santa Cruz, California. Includes liner notes by Oliver DiCicco. Personnel: Fred Frith (acoustic guitar, electric guitar, violin, piano, marimba, drums); Henry Kaiser (acoustic guitar, electric guitar, banjo, electric sitar, piano, drums). Recording information: 1979-1999. In 1979, guitarists Fred Frith and Henry Kaiser made an album titled With Friends Like These... on the Metalanguage label. It was one of the defining documents of the downtown avant-garde scene, a collection of improvised duets on which both players essentially redefined the sound of the guitar, Frith with his physically altered (and sometimes beaten) instruments, and Kaiser with his virtuosic and harmonically adventurous technique. Four years later they ...

$15.65 Personnel: Fred Hersch (piano); Bill Frisell (guitar). Recorded at Mobius Music, San Francisco, California. Includes liner notes by Bob Blumenthal. Personnel: Fred Hersch (piano); Bill Frisell (guitar). Audio Mixer: Christian Jones. Liner Note Author: Bob Blumenthal. Recording information: Möbius Music, San Francisco, CA. Photographer: Christine Alicino. At first glance, the combination of pianist Fred Hersch and guitarist Bill Frisell as a duo might not seem all that logical, particularly if one relies on stereotypes that only fit part of their music (i.e., Hersch is an introspective player in the Bill Evans vein, while Frisell is a sound-oriented guitarist influenced by rock). In reality, both Hersch and Frisell are well-rounded, versatile players who share an adventurous spirit and a strong musical curiosity. The nature of their collaboration is a bit of a surprise; rather than playing originals specifically written for the occasion, Hersch and Frisell simply decided to perform ...

16 Most Requested Songs
$12.95 Released in conjunction with the 2007 Sigur Ros documentary HEIMA, the double-CD HVARF/HEIM set presents the revered Icelandic post-rock ensemble in two different settings. HVARF consists largely of previously unreleased tracks that capture the group's majestic sound, most notably "Hljomalind," which features the quartet building to glorious crescendos in full-blown rocked-out mode, and "I Gaer," a dark, dramatic number that harks back to Sigur Ros's goth-tinged early material. HVARF's companion disc, HEIM, finds the act working in a pared-down acoustic vein, with Jon Por Birgisson's fragile, emotive vocals more prominently showcased in the mix, as on the soaring "Staralfur" (from the lauded AGAETIS BYRJUN album) and the slowly unfurling "Von" (from the band's debut of the same name). While this compilation most readily appeals to diehard Sigur Ros fans, the first disc is dynamic enough to pull in new listeners, and the second radiates an intimate warmth, making the compilation much more than just a rarities collection. After floating in the same cirrus clouds for a decade, it would seem that the time has come for a change. Not to say that the lulling orchestral swells or Jon Birgisson's schoolboy falsetto have lost any of their magic over time; it's just ...
