Principally recorded at London Bridge Studio, Seattle, Washington from September 7-14, 1993. Written and recorded in about a week, Jar of Flies solidified Alice in Chains' somewhat bizarre pattern of alternating full-length hard rock albums with mostly acoustic, ballad-oriented EPs. That quirk aside, Jar of Flies is a low-key stunner, achingly gorgeous and harrowingly sorrowful all at once. In a way, it's a logical sequel to Dirt -- despite the veneer of calm, the songs' voices still blame only themselves. But where Dirt found catharsis in its unrelenting darkness and depravity, Jar of Flies is about living with the consequences, full of deeply felt reflections on loneliness, self-imposed isolation, and lost human connections. The mood is still hopelessly bleak, but the poignant, introspective tone produces a sense of acceptance that's actually soothing, in a funereal sort of way. Jerry Cantrell's arrangements keep growing more detailed and layered; while there are a few noisy moments, most of Jar of Flies is bathed in a clean, shimmering ambience whose source is difficult to pin down, but is well served by Cantrell's varied guitar tones and even occasional string arrangements. And coming on the heels of Dirt, the restraint and subtlety of Jar of Flies are nothing short of revelatory -- though it was written and recorded in about a week, it feels much more crafted and textured than Sap. Perhaps Jar of Flies would have gotten more credit if it had been a full-length album; as it stands, the EP is a leap forward and a major work in the Alice in Chains catalog. ~ Steve Huey Throughout Alice In Chain's body of work, an aura of menace and evil permeates the songs in a deceptively sinister way. JAR OF FLIES is their second EP (the first was SAP), and although they return to more of an unplugged, Alice In Chains Lite sound (as opposed to their usual waves of crashing distortion and dive-bombing leads), it's far from being a polite, poppy record. Collectively, the group goes out on a much more experimental limb. "Swing On This" has a faux-jazz groove to it with newest member Mike Inez's stand-up bass goosing along the rhythm section. "Rotten Apple" opens the album with an eerie, foreboding harmonica played through a chamber. As always, front man Layne Staley's lyrics deal with displacement, disillusionment and fighting with one's sense of self, particularly in the moving "Don't Follow." To further liven things, Alice In Chains use a string section as a major facet of "I Stay Away," building it up into a Wagnerian crescendo at the end of the song.Rolling Stone (3/24/94, p.95) - 3 1/2 Stars - Very Good - "...darkly gorgeous...." Spin (1/27/94, p.68) - "...Alice in Chains has broken out of its trademark art-metal grind with the seven-song EP JAR OF FLIES, the band's warmest, most relaxed record ever...." Q (2/94, p.93) - 4 Stars - Excellent - "...there's something deadly serious about the misery, rage and disgust that fuels them. Quite simply, they sound like they're playing for keeps....a powerfully suffocating album about powerlessness...." Melody Maker (1/22/94, p.33) - "...This is metal transposed into dream time....It's the real deal...." A beautifully written ep I love all of Alice's albums but Jar Of Flies is just awesome. I don't play it as often as I do the other cds, I don't know why, its an excellent ep. I like all the songs on Jar Of Flies, but if I had to pick one it would be Nutshell, that's the best track on this album, that and Rotten Apple. If you haven't heard this cd, I suggest you go pick it up. Submitted by Ryan (Weshester, Ohio) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Alice in Chains at their brilliant best I bought this album and this is Alice in Chains' best album - not only that but it is one of the best albums you can buy - period. The use of clean tone guitar almost throughout the entire album, with slow to moderately paced haunting melodies such as in Nutshell and Rotten Apple, Layne Staley's incomparably powerful vocals in I Stay Away, with some of the best backing guitar music you will listen to make this album one that you simply MUST have. Its very different its predecessors i.e. Facelift and the hugely popular DIRT, because distorted guitar is not used. This may sound like a disadvantage to many, but it is not - this album doesn't need it, in fact it would have made it worse. This is a masterpiece. Dare I say this is better than DIRT ? - You bet your +ss I dare. Submitted by lynchp (Ennis, Co. Clare, Ireland) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Alice In Chains: Layne Staley, Jerry Cantrell (vocals, guitar); Michael Starr (bass); Sean Kinney (drums). Additional personnel: Tom Araya (background vocals). Recorded in 1992. Dirt is Alice in Chains' major artistic statement and the closest they ever came to recording a flat-out masterpiece. It's a primal, sickening howl from the depths of Layne Staley's heroin addiction, and one of the most harrowing concept albums ever recorded. Not every song on Dirt is explicitly ...
