(4 Customer Reviews)
System of a Down sees itself as being an integral part of a new musical revolution of heavy music. On the surface, the band's manifesto seems tangential to Rage Against the Machine's; but musically SOAD is a groove-metal machine, with a sound that incorporates a punk ethic, Panteraesque riffs, and a schizophrenic vocal approach reminiscent of Mike Patton.
Like a dose of chicken soup for a disconnected moshing youth, SYSTEM OF A DOWN is unrelenting. "Sugar" segues from neo-jazz verses into pounding thrash-core choruses. "Spiders" shows more depth, dynamics, and even poetic, melodic vocals. The production of the album is raw and very close to that of a live album, surely a deliberate stroke by producer Rick Rubin (who has put many metal bands on the map under his guidance). On "Soil," vocalist Serj Tankian questions the ideology of democracy. With possibly more conspiracy theories than an episode of THE X-FILES, System of a Down explores the concept of mass influence through technology in "War?" The essence of SYSTEM OF A DOWN can be found in "P.L.U.C.K"; the song's title says it all, an acronym for "politically lying, unholy, cowardly killers."
Principally recorded at Sound City, Van Nuys, California.
System Of A Down: Serj Tankian (vocals, keyboards, samples); Daron Malakian (guitar, background vocals); Shavo Odadjian (bass); John Dolmayan (drums).
Additional personnel: Rick Rubin (piano).

System Of A Down album
$14.89 "Scar Tissue" won the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Rock Song. CALIFORNICATION was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Rock Album. "Scar Tissue" was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Rock Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal.
"Californication" was nominated for the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal and for Best Rock Song.
CALIFORNICATION finds The Red Hot Chili Peppers once again in the more straightforward punk-funk mode of BLOOD SUGAR SEX MAGIK. This return to their original sound also marks the return of prodigal son John Frusciante, who takes over for his replacement, Dave Navarro. The Chili Peppers fill CALIFORNICATION with material shaped by personal and professional turmoil, resulting in a somewhat more sensitive approach than one might expected from a band whose hard-core following are skate-punks and drunken frat-boys. Songs such as "Otherside," "Scar Tissue" and "This Velvet Glove" overflow with background harmonies, while Frusciante's unadorned guitar provides support for Anthony Kiedis' emotive singing and broken-hearted lyrics.
The title track is one of the most impressive songs this quartet has written--It tells a tale of wandering souls who've lost their way searching for the American Dream in California. This sensitive showing does nothing to undermine the Chili Pepper's trademark aggressive musical style. If anything, ...
| | Linkin Park Hybrid Theory CD (2000)
System Of A Down CD music
$12.85 "Crawling" won the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock Performance.
Linkin Park's mixture of metal, industrial rock, and rap fits comfortably into the niche created by the likes of Kid Rock, Korn, and Limp Bizkit. The opening "Papercut" is every bit as angular and unavoidable as its title. "With You" opens with electronic squeaks and squiggles before leaping into a mix of heavy guitar riffs and hip-hop rhythms. "Crawling" bears a largely subdued tone and atmospheric synth coloring that provides a respite from the crushing riffs and grinding rhythms that typify HYBRID THEORY, but even this relatively sedate song is full of tension and sonic angst. The five young men of Linkin Park are on a mission to communicate their inner turmoil through a non-stop barrage of confrontational lyrics and aggressive aural constructions, and their debut gets the point across with alacrity.

$9.29 "Chop Suey!" was nominated for the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance.
"Aerials" was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards for Best Hard Rock Performance.
While System of a down are often cast with the nu-metal crowd, their sound is closer to '80s thrash (and even hardcore punk) than to any of the rap-metal hordes. Grinding guitars and death-knell drums may be the order of the day, but they work in service of a highly developed socio-political consciousness. In fact, when he's not lacerating his vocal cords, singer Tankian delivers his rebellious lyrics in a tone reminiscent of infamous Dead Kennedys frontman Jello Biafra. Make no mistake, the thrash quotient on TOXICITY is high enough to satiate even the hungriest headbanger, but System of a Down understands the power of dynamics, often moving from a whisper to a scream over the course of the album (though they obviously spend far more time on the scream end of the spectrum). Additionally, they deliver their eye-gouging riffs with an unerring ...
| | System Of A Down Mezmerize CD (2005)
System Of A Down songs
$9.59 Many rock bands talk endlessly about their "sound," refining a basic formula until it's either perfect or perfectly boring. System of a Down, however, developed a loyal fanbase with the opposite approach--the group mixes genres so freely that describing what their music sounds like is nearly impossible. Sure, SOAD is, at its core, a metal band, but on MEZMERIZE's first two songs alone, vocalist/guitarist/mastermind Daron Malakian and crew zigzag their way though Beach Boys-like stacked vocal harmonies, Anthrax-esque hardcore thrash, Cameo-style funk, and prog rock of a CARESS OF STEEL-era Rush variety. "Revenga" adds a touch of swooping Freddie Mercury vocal drama to the mix, while "Sad Statue" ...
| | System Of A Down Hypnotize CD (2005) DualDisc
System Of A Down album
$16.69 This is a DualDisc, which contains a CD on one side of the disc and a DVD on the other.
Just when it seemed that System of a Down couldn't do anything to improve on their standing as the most unique and ambitious band in the alternative metal world, they decided to drop their sprawling, Rick Rubin-produced double album by releasing each disc separately. Early 2005 saw the arrival of MESMERIZE. After that album gained significant exposure via tours, radio, and videos, the album's counterpart, HYPNOTIZE, was released in late November. The albums were recorded in the same sessions--so there is a strong sense of musical cohesion, and even the CD packages themselves are designed to fit together to form one set.
"Attack" and "Dreaming" the first songs on HYPNOTIZE, are classic System of a Down with their furious riffage, schizophrenic song structures, and the slinky, nasal vocals of lead singer Serj Tankian. The band knows how to craft a hook ("Kill ...

$13.49 | | Tangents: The Tea Party Collection CD (2000)
System Of A Down CD music
$24.45 Alternative rock and metal outfit the Tea Party perform a compilation of their greatest hits and their obscure B-sides and remixes on this hard-hitting 15-track release.
It may puzzle some why a band like the Tea Party that has only put out four albums and an enhanced EP thus far would already choose to release a collection of their "greatest hits," so to speak, but one has to keep in mind that Martin, Chatwood, and Burrows have been playing music together and putting out albums for a decade now (and were playing together in other bands, shapes, and forms as far back as their childhood) which is longer than other better-known, more influential "power trio" bands like the Jimi Hendrix Experience or the Police ever managed to survive; more importantly, like those bands, the Tea Party have an extremely enviable and disproportionately strong output of material in their catalog. Plus, with their last album, Triptych, the band seemed to turn an exciting corner both musically and personally, so, really, it is no surprise that they elected to compile and submit Tangents: The Tea Party Collection before embarking upon the sessions for another album. Despite the unfortunate and more than a little bewildering omission of such staple Tea Party standards as "A Certain Slant Of Light," "Correspondences," and "Transmission," Tangents actually performs the difficult task of capturing the band's past highlights in a one-disc retrospective glance backward very well with quite a bit of grace, and of course, though fans may argue over what songs were excluded as fans always will, all of the band's biggest and best known songs ("Sister Awake," "Save Me," "Temptation," and "Heaven Coming Down") are standing present and accounted for here. Although it's disappointing to discover that great older songs like "Let Me Show You The Door" and "Watching What The Rain Blows In" -- both of which could have easily stood their ground even in this fine company -- are absent along with everything else yet to be re-released from the band's nearly impossible to find 1993 indie album, they did take the time to gather up the small trove of obscurities and B-sides (strangely minus "The Woman Is A Devil" from certain bonus disc European versions of Triptych) they have collected over the years, the best of these being the elegant and near-anthemic euphoria of "Lifeline," a song which is as good as anything released on their albums, and the worst of these being an interesting but poorly chosen cover of the Stones' classic, "Paint It Black," which provides an exercise in the saying "if it ain't broke, don't fix it." Also included is the pre-released "Walking Wounded" from the band's upcoming album which was hyped perhaps too much as the next "Sister Awake" due to the song's inherent multi-part complexities; yet, while being an excellent composition in its own right, it doesn't quite break the barrier of its own expectations for some reason. All in all, Tangents is the undisputed indispensable affair of those searching for a comprehensive composite introduction to the the Tea Party as well as those who are already fans because it provides both the broad sweep of classics for

| | Traditional Music Of Peru, Vol. 7: Lima Highlands CD (2001)
System Of A Down music CDs
$14.65 Includes liner notes in English and Spanish by Manuel P. Raez.
There are a number of striking factors about this set of field recordings. The first is the absence of pan pipes, so long associated with Andean music. The lilting melodies are there, but generally played on other instruments. Then there's the prevalence of violin, which presumably arrived with the Spanish, as brass instruments did with other peoples; the brass bands tend to be heard on the huaynos and marineras, but here are heard on "Negra," a traditional dance of a black slave. Split into three sections -- ceremonial music, dances, and music for popular theater -- there's a stunningly wide range of music, with older instruments predominating, as might be imagined, in the ceremonial music, where a cow horn and flute are as common as vocals; the ensembles come more for dances and theater music. The fact that these recordings were made during the '90s serves as a reminder that the traditions remain strong in rural Peru, a country wracked by war and civil unrest, but how long can they stand as progress casts its net wider and wider? To be fair, the prime audience for this is ethnomusicological -- not too many casual listeners will sit through 50 minutes of pieces that are often just snippets -- and the notes, though thorough, do tend to assume a certain level of knowledge. But it stands as an education and a realization ...

| | Catie Curtis Dreaming In Romance Languages CD (2004)
System Of A Down album
$14.79 It's hard to imagine anyone with even the slightest tolerance for rootsy singer/songwriter rock & roll not falling immediately under the spell of Catie Curtis, a Boston-based artist whose albums and live performances have been building her a substantial regional and national following over the past 15 years. Her fifth album is, thankfully, nothing substantially new: just a solid program of sturdy, sometimes anthemic, and occasionally darkly cathartic songs that chug along with the help of acoustic and electric guitars, the occasional Hammond organ or accordion, tasteful drums, and even a rhythm loop or two. Curtis is starting to rely a bit too much on one particular yodelly vocal trick, but other than that, her voice and delivery are perfectly suited to the material: on songs like "Hold On," "Saint Lucy," and a deeply affecting cover of the late Mark Sandman's "Night," she hits all the notes just right while making it sound as if she's not really trying to hit the notes at all. "Cross Over to Me," which Curtis wrote in collaboration with Beth Nielsen Chapman, is an artful expression of romantic yearning, and "Doctor" is an artless expression of dissatisfaction with a cruel world. All in all, this is a solid and satisfying effort ...

Hail the low frequency berserker.
One of those unorthodox musical endeavors which many might dismiss as a crude joke (or, well, utter sh*te), San Francisco's Burmese preoccupy themselves with churning out what alternately sounds like industrial white noise and Napalm Death-styled grindcore, fed through a metaphorical drainer of screeching feedback and distortion. Therefore, the overall effect of these ten songs (most lasting mere seconds) is highly original, but nerve-shattering and disorienting to the point of inducing ...

Coated with lush vocal harmonies, intricate guitar and keyboard work, the music here flows perfectly and effortlessly from beginning to end. Recorded and performed with a moderate 80's flare, "The Other Side" has been compared to artists such as Hall and Oates, The Tubes, 10cc, Toto, Brian May of Queen and The Alan Parsons Project. -----------------"It's amazing, this crazy world of music. $13.49 No, it's not just you. A few of the songs on Thump's Old School '80s compilation -- like Marvin Gaye's "Got to Give It Up" and Rufus & Chaka Khan's "At Midnight (My Love Will Lift You Up)" -- came out in the '70s. And one inclusion -- Bell Biv DeVoe's "Poison" -- came out in 1990. Even with the inexplicable slip, it's hard to fault the contents of a disc featuring nothing but ...
