OUTBOUND won the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Jazz Album. "Zona Mona" was nominated for the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Pop Instrumental Performance.
With OUTBOUND, Bela Fleck and his Flecktones blend their eclectic mix of high-energy bluegrass and jazz with instrumentalists and vocalists from a wide range of styles. Among these are B3 master John Medeski, eclectic guitarist Adrian Belew, and pop vocalists Shawn Colvin and Yes' Jon Anderson. As you may expect, this makes for some of the most unique aural adventures to come down the pike in a long while.
With a nod to Oliver Nelson's BLUES & THE ABSTRACT TRUTH arrangement, Fleck offers a contemporary take on Aaron Copland's "Hoedown." He then launches into the intriguing "A Moment So Close," which mixes urban funk, Middle Eastern flavors, and contemporary pop vocals. If that's not enough to strip your gears, Adrian Belew's space-age guitar textures and Shawn Colvin's wordless vocal introduction into the otherwise rolling groove of "Hall of Mirrors" are likely to make you sit up and take immediate notice. More evidence of Fleck's stylistic wizardry is the exciting "Ainum," a piece that, while at first appearing as merely a pop vocal, incorporates everything from bluegrass and jazz to Indian drumming and funk. Other mesmerizing musical escapades include the lilting "Lover's Leap," the fusion-esque title track, and the impenetrable "Scratch & Sniff."

| Outbound Music Review Average Rating: (3.7 out of 5 stars) Disappointing I expected a great cd based on all the guest artists. The cd doesn't seem to be well defined, songs just don't know where they want to go. if you like bela, than it's a must have for the collection, but don't expect any new ground breaking tunes. Outstanding! This album is highly entertaining from begining to end. If what you're looking for is a neatly defined 3:30 min. set of tunes, you won't like it. However, if what you enjoy is musicians who stretch the boundaries of music and who are not confined by conventional writing wisdom you're going to love this album! These tunes stick in your head, they are there when you wake up in the morning luring you into one more listen before starting your day. This is an excellent album for any time of day or any type of activity from sitting and listening intently to parties to dinner music. Outbound was my introduction to Bela, and I find myself wanting to explore his entire discography based on the genius of this album. So my next purchase was "Little Worlds" - and guess what? It is just as wonderful of a musical experience as "Outbound". Submitted by lysistrata (Seattle, WA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Plenty of Enjoyable Music For this album, the Flecktones decided to add the efforts of many guest musicians. Some of them, such as Jon Anderson, singer of Yes, have a very quick cameo. Others, like amazing Steel Pan player Andy Narell, or guitarist Adrian Belew appear on more than one track. This album has plenty going on, and is really a solid CD. Moment So Close is one of the best Flecktones songs ever, featuring 3 lead singers, and backing vocals, plus Bela playing his nylon string guitar. Hoedown is the classic Aaron Copland song.
If you enjoy this CD, there is a big surprise for you. There is a live CD and DVD from the Outbound Tour 2000 called Live at The Quick, so you can see many of the musicians on this album in concert. Most of the album is on the DVD/CD as well. Submitted by a reviewer (Chicago, IL, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Purchase Outbound CD To buy, Click on price to add to cart | Paul Butterfield Blues Band CD (1965)

$6.19 The '60s Blues Revival begins here. Calling this album influential is an understatement akin to calling the Grand Canyon a rut; suffice to say that an entire generation of musicians (mostly young and white) heard this and had their lives changed forever. ...
| | VH1 Presents The Corrs Live In Dublin CD (2002)
Outbound
$6.39 This audio document of The Corrs' Dublin homecoming concert has pretty much everything fans of Irish pop could wish for, including an appearance from Bono in his earthly incarnation, fresh from an audience with President George W. Bush. It's to the band's credit that the charismatic singer fails to steal the show, despite creditable efforts via an anthemized version of Ryan Adams' beautifully downtempo "When the Stars Go Blue," and a great, leering rendition ...
| | Drive-By Truckers Southern Rock Opera CDs (2001) Digipak
Outbound
$11.99 A sprawling two-disc set, the Drive-By Truckers' SOUTHERN ROCK OPERA is a cracked masterpiece that's enjoyable on several different levels. Hipsters might enjoy the giggly premise of a two-disc set devoted to a slightly altered retelling of the rise and fall of 1970s Southern rock icons Lynyrd Skynyrd. Progressive rock fans lamenting the modern era's ...
| | Bright Eyes I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning CD (2005)
Outbound
$10.79 In early 2005, young indie icon Conor Oberst (AKA Bright Eyes) unveiled two full-length albums--I'M WIDE AWAKE, IT'S MORNING and DIGITAL ASH IN A DIGITAL URN. Whereas the latter proved to be a departure into electronic music, the former sticks to Oberst's established sound, which combines the urgency and heart-on-the-sleeve sentiment of emo-rock with twangy, down-home feel of alt-country and folk music.
I'M WIDE AWAKE begins with Oberst telling a story that morphs into "At the Bottom of Everything," a jangly, upbeat tune featuring My Morning Jacket's Jim James on backing vocals. Throughout the record, Oberst reaches nearly hysterical peaks, seemingly overcome with ...
| | Antony I Am A Bird Now CD (2005)
Outbound
$12.49 Though he probably achieved his greatest mainstream recognition backing up Lou Reed on tour, idiosyncratic songbird Antony is a fully established artiste in his own right. Backed by the Johnsons, as on I AM A BIRD NOW, he crafts delicate ballads that skirt the lines between cabaret, artsong, and pop, with the kind of voice that Stephin Merritt would probably kill for. Antony's unique pipes bring to mind an androgynous Bryan Ferry or a high, quavery summit meeting between Jimmy Scott (another Reed supporter) ...
| | Dredg Catch Without Arms CD (2005)

$8.49 Early on, critics often described Dredg as a metal group. However, the quartet has since matured into a hard-edged indie-rock ensemble that seeks diversity and refinement in its music. On CATCH WITHOUT ARMS, the band ...
| | Thomas Talbert Tom Talbert Jazz Orchestra 1946-1949 CD (1995)
Outbound
$13.75 Tom Talbert has long been a fixture in Los Angeles, writing arrangements, recording albums and occasionally appearing with his big band in local clubs. He is known for recording one classic set in the 1950s (Bix Duke Fats which has been reissued by the Modern Concepts label) but even veteran collectors can be forgiven for not being familiar with the historic recordings that are on his Sea Breeze CD since the majority of these valuable performances were previously unissued. Talbert led an orchestra in Los Angeles during the 1946-50 period that was (thanks to his advanced writing) as modern as the big bands of ...
