After a decade with Warner Bros., Béla Fleck jumped to Sony's Columbia Records, signing a five-record deal that called for two releases on Sony Classical, a solo album, and two discs with his band the Flecktones of which Outbound is the first. It is a typically eclectic effort. For example, the Fleck original "Shuba Yatra" (its title, he explains in the press materials, "is an Indian term that means taking a journey with a safe return") features a tabla player and Fleck on a "sitar banjo," an electrified instrument with a banjo head and a sitar bridge. Such instruments give the tune something of an Indian flavor, except that much of it is borrowed from traditional Irish music with a touch of South African rhythm. Such odd juxtapositions of instrumentation and style are typical not only from track to track but also within tracks. Fleck and his bandmates seem to view all styles of music as readily and randomly interchangeable, but sometimes, as with a colorblind person picking out clothes, the results clash or otherwise disturb, and the rest of the time they come off as flashy and insubstantial. Fleck really offers no defense to the charge of being a musical dilettante, he simply celebrates the surface pleasures of different varieties of music, offering an overlapping series of appetizers. A fan of any particular style is liable to feel that it has been trivialized, but Fleck doesn't mean any harm. His music represents the pursuit of facileness as a musical goal, one that he and his band achieve with alacrity. ~ William Ruhlmann With OUTBOUND, Bela Fleck and his Flecktones blend their eclectic mix of high-energy bluegrass and jazz with instrumentalists and vocalists from a wide range of styles. Among these are B3 master John Medeski, eclectic guitarist Adrian Belew, and pop vocalists Shawn Colvin and Yes' Jon Anderson. As you may expect, this makes for some of the most unique aural adventures to come down the pike in a long while. Bela Fleck Outbound Songs Outbound Music Review Average Rating: (3.7 out of 5 stars) Disappointing I expected a great cd based on all the guest artists. The cd doesn't seem to be well defined, songs just don't know where they want to go. if you like bela, than it's a must have for the collection, but don't expect any new ground breaking tunes. Outstanding! This album is highly entertaining from begining to end. If what you're looking for is a neatly defined 3:30 min. set of tunes, you won't like it. However, if what you enjoy is musicians who stretch the boundaries of music and who are not confined by conventional writing wisdom you're going to love this album! These tunes stick in your head, they are there when you wake up in the morning luring you into one more listen before starting your day. This is an excellent album for any time of day or any type of activity from sitting and listening intently to parties to dinner music. Outbound was my introduction to Bela, and I find myself wanting to explore his entire discography based on the genius of this album. So my next purchase was "Little Worlds" - and guess what? It is just as wonderful of a musical experience as "Outbound". Submitted by lysistrata (Seattle, WA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Plenty of Enjoyable Music For this album, the Flecktones decided to add the efforts of many guest musicians. Some of them, such as Jon Anderson, singer of Yes, have a very quick cameo. Others, like amazing Steel Pan player Andy Narell, or guitarist Adrian Belew appear on more than one track. This album has plenty going on, and is really a solid CD. Moment So Close is one of the best Flecktones songs ever, featuring 3 lead singers, and backing vocals, plus Bela playing his nylon string guitar. Hoedown is the classic Aaron Copland song.
If you enjoy this CD, there is a big surprise for you. There is a live CD and DVD from the Outbound Tour 2000 called Live at The Quick, so you can see many of the musicians on this album in concert. Most of the album is on the DVD/CD as well. Submitted by a reviewer (Chicago, IL, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
