THANKFUL won the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Soul Gospel Album.
Singer/songwriters Erica and Tina Atkins, the duo that makes up Mary Mary, combine modern R&B textures and spirituality in their debut album THANKFUL, produced by Warryn Campbell (Brandy, Boyz II Men). You can hear the joy, hope, and religious overtones in songs like "Joy," "Can't Give Up Now," and "Be Happy," while label mates Destiny's Child are featured on "Good to Me." Mary Mary display their unshakeable faith throughout this collection with a vibrant and joyous celebration of songs.
Other notable songs are the dance floor funk of "Shackles," "I Got It," and "What a Friend," a slower track depicting the Lord's grace. Erica and Tina contribute to all but one of the tracks, Andrew GouchT's "Wade In the Water." THANKFUL is uplifting, bright and extremely catchy.

Q (7/00, p.120) - 3 stars out of 5 - "...The lyrics are standard hallelujah fare, although neither craven nor proselytizing. On the brasher 'Shackles'...and the terrific title track there's soul to spare..." Buy Thankful CD | | Mary Mary

Thankful album
$8.99 Like so many American artists before him, pop-gospel singer/songwriter Donnie McClurkin brought his music to England to be received with open arms. McClurkin recorded his second album in London, the town that had taken him to its bosom, and it's the site of this live recording as well. From the near-religious ecstasy of the MC's introduction to the unabashed enthusiasm of the audience, it's plain that London loves this boy from the States.
McClurkin's music is a vehicle for his spiritual beliefs, but that doesn't mean dour theology lessons. Rather, his blend of pop, gospel, and R&B is an exciting, uplifting thing. Marvin Winans ups the ante by joining in on the subtly groovy, almost Bill Withers-like "Who Would've Thought." As shown on "Just For Me," McClurkin has a way with a ballad as well, and some canny choral backing ...
| | Yolanda Adams Mountain High...Valley Low CD (1999)
Thankful CD music
$7.49 MOUNTAIN HIGH...VALLEY LOW won the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Soul Gospel Album.
'90s gospel phenomenon Adams' major-label debut is about as high-gloss as it gets--the great production team of Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis is all over it--and if you weren't paying careful attention, you might not even notice that it was religiously themed; the opening "Time to Change," for example, with its lyrics about "a woman from down the streetątryin' to get the attention of a married man" sounds more like hip-hop social realism than a paean to the Lord.
It's not long before the listener gets the message, though; by the time "That Name" comes up, a massive production number that goes from a placid piano/strings intro to a mass choir blow-out with Adams' sultry alto soaring serenely above the din, you know there's some serious testifying going on here. The bottom line is that while the album's mix of gospel, hip-hop, and soul is designed for maximum cross-over appeal, it undeniably works, and has the capacity to strike even the secular as uplifting; in fact, you'd have to ...

Mary Mary is made up of two young sisters who write and sing together in a style that melds pop, R&B, and a touch of hip-hop with a spiritually oriented lyrical message. Their 2000 debut turned many heads, but the follow-up INCREDIBLE proved to be the one that broke the duo in a major way. The chirpy synths and bubbly groove of "God Bless" meld perfectly with the optimistic nature ...

| | Kirk Franklin Hero CD (2005)
Thankful album
$9.59 Though testimonies of faith and questions of morality are still at the heart of Kirk Franklin's message, 2005's HERO represents something of a musical departure for the gospel superstar. Recorded with a full orchestra--complete with lush strings and driving horns--HERO is one of Franklin's most musically ambitious outings.
Featuring guest appearances by Stevie Wonder ("Why"), Dorinda Clark-Cole ("Hero"), ...
