Recorded live at the Newport Jazz Festival, Newport, Rhode Island on July 7, 1956. Includes liner notes by George Avakian and Phil Schaap.

Digitally remastered by Phil Schaap (Sony Music Studios, New York, New York).

What makes this classic recording endure is the monumental level of intensity the band brings to each number. Ellington, in speaking of the band's competitive nature, recalled that they were all in a particularly fesity mode for this performance. That crackling energy translates to every number, and even extended to Count Basie's original drummer Jo Jones, who sat grinning from ear to ear in the front row, so moved by the swing of it all that he beat time for the band with a rolled up copy of The Christian Science Monitor.

From Johnny Hodges' ultra-suave "Jeep's Blues," to Paul Gonsalves' epic tenor marathon on "Diminuendo And Crescendo In Blue" (which set the crowd to dancing and screaming), ELLINGTON AT NEWPORT is one of the really great big band recordings.

2 Cds-Complete

Entertainment Weekly (6/24/99, p.133) - "...dizzying jazz, from the swinging orchestra suite composed for the festival to saxophonist Paul Gonsalvas' 27-chorus improvisation in "Diminuendo and Crescendo in Blue." - Rating: A
Q (9/99, p.125) - 3 stars (out of 5) - "...one of the most famous of jazz concerts of all time...generally acknowledged to have put him back on the map after a period in the commercial doldrums....every fan will want a copy."
JazzTimes (10/99, pp.82-4) - "...presents for the first time in true stereo every note that the band played at Newport over that famous weekend of July 7/8, 1956....To hear this classic performance in stereo...is alone worth the price of admission..."

5 stars Ellington at his peak with a FANTASTIC sax riff.
This is one of those concerts which you hope someone would record, and they did. Of historical significance - yes - but more than that, a great piece of music. The sax playing alone is rare and wonderful, and the band on top of that is great.

3 stars Perhaps the greatest album ever
This is an Ellington fan's dream: the complete Newport concert, along with a new stereo mix of the non-fake music from side two. If "Festival Junction" and "Diminuendo and Crescendo in Blue" don't thrill you to the bone, you're dead, Jack!

Beat The Donkey
Cyro Baptista Beat The Donkey CD  (2002)

Ellington At Newport 1956 album
CD $13.39  Audio Samples
Make no mistake -- Beat the Donkey (translated from the Portuguese "Pau la Mula" as "let's go" or "let's do it") is not a reference to animal cruelty, but percussion Cyro Baptista's calling card to party. This debut recording for the group is split into fragments of small ensembles, a rotating cadre of players (a sextet at best) from many different disciplines. They range from riotous celebratory dance to multi-ethnic elements, cerebral, lighthearted, at times goofy and at other times heavy. There is no real core band, but rather a Gypsy circus loose association with Baptista clearly the madcap ringleader. Brazilian music can be the center of Beat the Donkey, but also Balkan sounds, nomadic music, rock and funk, and a festive attitude that surely appeals to summertime outdoor merrymaking. Carnival meets hard rock circus at a stoner party during "Caranguejo Estrela Brilhante" (The Crab and the Shining Star) with fuzz guitar from Viva DeConcini and electric cello by Erik Friedlander; an expressive madlib rock & roll style identifies "O Canto da Ema," centered by Marc Ribot's wah-wah guitar; and the ethnic "Mr. Bugaloo" is a percussion workout accented by John Zorn's sax and the accordion of Toninho Ferragutti. On the softer side is the excellent "Parar de Fumar," a pleasant straight samba with featured clarinetist Anat Cohen. A circular acoustic guitar from Ribot during "Cyrandeiro" recalls West African kora music, ...

Fabolous scored rather sudden hip-hop celebrity with his catchy crossover hit "Can't Deny It" and the mega-successful album GHETTO FABOLOUS, with a style showcasing the perfect balance of the hardcore and the mainstream. However, while his rhymes were certainly palatable, his outer brash persona belied a subtle wit and unique ...
