who would have thought
I must add that i was really surprised by the sound quality especially for a festival (as in outdoor) performance. For my money i prefer this version of Tommy to that on the expanded Live at Leeds.

Do They Go To Eleven?
Indeed they do! This set was a real suprise. Usually performances at big festivals like this do not rank among any given bands finest.

Live at the Isle of Wight Festival 1970 album for sale Recorded between 1968 & 1971. Includes liner notes by Pete Townshend, John Atkins, and Chris Charlesworth. This remastered edition of WHO'S NEXT features seven bonus tracks. Though Pete Townshend was originally unhappy with WHO'S NEXT, it was quickly welcomed by critics and fans, becoming one of the most celebrated titles in their enduring catalog. His frustrations boiled down to the album being a compromised version of a larger work he'd envisioned, LIFEHOUSE, which proved too unwieldy to be realized. Expanded to a two-disc set with essays by both Townshend and John Atkins, the original nine-song album is expanded with six additional studio tracks. These include earlier versions of the album's songs and a cover of Holland-Dozier-Holland's "Baby Don't You Do It." Recorded in New York during the spring of 1971 in the midst of a fraying relationship with producer Kit Lambert, the early cuts clearly don't have the sonic breadth and wallop of what the Who achieved back in England later in the year, but are fascinating nonetheless. The second disc was recorded live before an invited audience, and was originally part of the album's grand plan. Mixing new material with covers ("Road Runner;" Mose Allison's "Young Man Blues") and original tunes from their past (the anthem "My Generation"), the band plays with a palpable urgency and fire. This was the Who at the peak of its powers, a status the group would retain as a live act through the '70s. Includes liner notes by Pete Townshend and John Atkins. All songs written by members of The Who except "Fortune Teller" (Naomi Neville), "Young Man Blues" (Mose Allison), "Summertime Blues" (Eddie Cochran/Jerry Capehart) and "Shakin' All Over" (Johnny Kidd). This 2-CD Deluxe Edition of LIVE AT LEEDS, recorded on February 14, 1970, contains the entire show including all of TOMMY which was previously unreleased. Recorded live at Leeds University, Leeds, England on February 14, 1970. Originally released on Decca (79175) in May 1970. In addition to making some of the finest studio albums in rock history (ranging in approach from proto-pop-punk to the first rock operas), the Who, live, epitomized the brash, electrifying energy that put a new face on the music in the 1960s. The original LIVE AT LEEDS album, released in 1970, looked straight into the eye of this hurricane on a single disc featuring six tracks. A 1995 reissue doubled the number of songs. The DELUXE EDITION, however, released in 2001, is the first document to feature the Leeds concert in its entirety. Spread out over two discs, this most recent update is definitive, and includes a 28-page booklet, sections of band-audience banter, and--most importantly--a full performance of TOMMY. The sound, enhanced here in a new mix supervised by guitarist/songwriter Pete Townshend, is crystalline, without losing any of the group's swirling chaos and bone-crushing sonic impact. Though the Who later began to abridge TOMMY live, disc two features the entire opera, while the first disc houses "Substitute," "My Generation," and a blood-pumping cover of "Summertime Blues," among other singles. For any Who fan, this edition is essential. Digitally remastered by Jon Astley. Live at the Isle of Wight Festival 1970 buy CD music This 1995 reissue of THE WHO SELL OUT includes songs and jingles not available on the original version. Originally released on Track (612002/613002). Released in the U.S. on Decca (4950/74950) in 1968. Only three albums into its recording career, the Who had already begun to distance itself from its proletarian R&B beginnings. Here, songwriter Pete Townshend follows up on the rock-opera idea he had introduced on A QUICK ONE with the extended, multi-part composition "Rael" and would later expand upon with TOMMY. The band had also begun exploring the form of the concept album. The songs are connected by bits of fake radio commercials and brass fanfares, and there's a little of everything thrown into the mix. All-out rockers like the vengeful "I Can See For Miles" vie for the listener's attention with the romantic declarations of "Our Love Was" and the soft, folky "Maryanne With The Shaky Hand" on this impressively eclectic album. Recorded in 1967 & 1968. Includes liner notes by Dave Marsh. The Who: Pete Townshend (vocals, guitar, piano); John Entwistle (vocals, bass); Roger Daltrey (vocals); Keith Moon (drums). Live at the Isle of Wight Festival 1970 songs ODDS AND SODS is a collection of outtakes and rarities from the 1960s through the early '70s, including "I'm The Face," recorded by The Who when they called themselves The High Numbers. ODDS AND SODS stands out a bit in the Who canon. The aptly titled 1974 collection features songs that, for one reason or another, didn't end up on their initial recordings. It's a mixed bag to be sure, one that includes pre-Who numbers like "I'm the Face," introspective and religious-themed pop ("Too Much of Anything," "Faith in Something Bigger"), and some inspired goofiness like the anti-smoking "Little Billy." Unlike a lot of out-takes collections, there are no clinkers here, and there are several gems. "Pure and Easy," from the aborted "Lighthouse" project, ranks with any of the great melodies Pete Townshend has written. The slowly building "Naked Eye," passionately sung in alternating verses by Daltrey and Townshend, ebbs and flows to an explosive climax. The most familiar tune here is probably "Long Live Rock," whose canny lyrics look back at the band's early days and boast, "We were the first band to vomit in the bar/and find the distance to the stage too far." A quirky collection that grows more appealing as time goes by. Originally released on MCA (2126) . The Who: John Entwistle (bass instrument, background vocals); Keith Moon , Pete Townshend (background vocals); Roger Daltrey.
