| | Benny Goodman Live At Carnegie Hall 1938 - Complete CD Benny Goodman Discography of CDs

The Benny Goodman Orchestra was in top form when this concert was performed on January 16th, 1938. But this is more than just a concert; this date is significant because it represents the first time a jazz ensemble ever played in a concert hall.
The full Goodman orchestra is featured on many tracks of this two-disc set. Goodman also splits up the evening with some performances by his trio and quartet. Additionally, he gives a 20-year retrospective of jazz, highlighting the Dixieland sound and innovators such as Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, and others. (On "Blue Reverie," some of Ellington's musicians even sit in with Goodman.) Highlights include "Sing Sing Sing (With a Swing)," a classic tune that helped to define the Swing Era itself. This piece features the charismatic drummer Gene Krupa, whose tom-tom rhythms convey a kind of "jungle feel," as the brass figures mimic the call of elephants. On "Avalon," another Goodman favorite, vibraphonist Lionel Hampton really shines. His meticulous arpeggiated runs up and down the vibes are just as exciting today as they must have been in 1938. LIVE AT CARNEGIE HALL 1938 is truly a jazz milestone.

College memories brought back The original Columbia release on 78s was issued when I was at Columbia Business School. I must have worn out the vinyl from so many playings. The CD's are just as enjoyable. This set captures a major musical event that was a first ever. The only reason I have not given it 5-stars is the last tracks on disk 2. It consists of Goodman narrating various pieces that are at the start of the concert-but these naratives belong with each piece. What you hear is his introduction followed by ...and that's how it sounded. The music is elsewhere on the set. It would have been better to incorporate the tracks again so they followed each narration instead of one narration after the other without the music. A Masterpiece Gets Its Proper Treatment Phil Schaap sought perfection, and got it. If you're familiar with the history of this concert and all the various packages issued by Columbia for 50 years - you will understand Phil's tireless mission to track down the original acetates and preserve them for future generations.
This is the complete concert, including the breaks for instrument/musician changes. Thankfully, no noise reduction was used in the mastering process. You get the real deal, as noted in the extensive booklet on page 38. Krupa's brushwork and Green's rhythm guitar are fully evident now, and more importantly, the DYNAMICS of the entire ensemble are astounding.
This recording belongs on every jazz fan's shelf, right next to "Kind Of Blue" and "Time Out". This performance set the standard for 20 years, and it still shines almost 70 years later. Submitted by jtlh (Worthington, KY, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
