| Beware: Poor Sound Quality Despite the wonderful selection of songs, the so called "remastering" is not good. The music sounds one dimensional and screechy. The wondeful voice of Doris, and the fine orchestral accompaniment, is wasted. By lawrencecerf (Houston, TX, USA) |

Andy Williams 16 Biggest Hits CD (2000) Top Seller
Golden Girl: Columbia Recordings 1944-1966 CD music Digitally remastered by Darcy M. Proper (Sony Music Studios, New York, New York).
This Columbia Legacy compilation presents a concise overview of vocalist Andy Williams's distinguished career, starting with his early, gentle rock & roll numbers (the 1957 Number One smash "Butterfly," "I Like Your Kind of Love"), and continuing on through his immense popularity as an interpreter of easy-listening standards during the '60s and '70s. Seven of these tracks are taken from film soundtracks, a medium that perfectly suited Williams's uniquely affecting tenor. The power of his singing is undeniable on Henry Mancini and Johnny Mercer's "Moon River" (from BREAKFAST AT TIFFANY'S) and 1972's "Speak Softly Love" (from THE GODFATHER). Also notable here is Williams's staccato, string-driven take on Doc Pomus and Mort Schuman's "Can't Get Used to Losing You," his graceful reading of "Quiet Nights of Quiet Stars (Corcovado)," and the swinging lounge-groove of 1967's "Music to Watch Girls By." As an introduction to the charismatic crooner, 16 BIGGEST HITS is ideal.
Recorded between 1957 & 1972.

Frank Sinatra Songs for Swingin' Lovers! CD (1956)
Golden Girl: Columbia Recordings 1944-1966 buy CD music All tracks have been digitally remastered using 20-bit technology.
Recorded on October 17, 1955 and on January 9-17, 1956. Originally released on Capitol. Includes liner notes by Pete Welding.
When Sinatra teams up with conductor/arranger Nelson Riddle, you know the results are bound to swing, and swinging is what this brash, jazzy and very upbeat album is all about. Though the Chairman has staked his claim as the preeminent saloon singer, telling tale after tragic tale of love gone awry, this album represents the sunny side of Sinatra. He is bold and energetic here. His undeniably authoritative readings of songs like "I've Got You Under My Skin" and "You Make Me Feel So Young" MAKE them into standards, no matter who has sung them before.
Riddle's orchestrations are subtle but powerful, and SWINGIN' LOVERS finds Sinatra's voice bouncing off punchy horn stabs and floating gently along sweet rivers of woodwinds. One of the most impressive aspects of Sinatra's talent is his control over the tone and shape of his voice. His singing is expansive and fluid-sounding, but it's plain that every atom of that sound is crafted with the utmost precision. Sinatra's depth of musical understanding makes his delivery of even light-hearted songs like "Anything Goes" and "Makin' Whoopee" cut as deeply as his most romantic ballad.
Recorded on October 17, 1955 and on January 9-17, 1956. Includes liner notes by Pete Welding.

Nat "King" Cole After Midnight CD (1957) Top Seller
Golden Girl: Columbia Recordings 1944-1966 songs Digitally remastered using 20-bit technology by Ron McMaster.
The AFTER MIDNIGHT sessions were Nat "King" Cole's attempt in 1956 to get a little more in touch with his jazz roots, once again accompanying himself on piano--at one time Cole was considered the heir to Teddy Wilson--and playing with a small combo that included Harry "Sweets" Edison on trumpet, Juan Tizol on trombone, and Ray Nance on violin. As such it was a highly succesful date for Cole and Co. and it stands up more than 50 years later. This was no mere jam session but a chance to hear Cole vocalizing in a non-orchestral setting, just like his early trio but this time singing full-fledged standards like "What Is There To Say?" and the beautifully rendered "You're Looking At Me," not just the familiar Cole trio novelties. THE COMPLETE AFTER MIDNIGHT SESSIONS gathers the 21 master takes that were recorded at the time, three more than the previous "complete" edition on Capitol.
Recorded at Capitol Studios, Los Angeles, California between August 15 & September 24, 1956. Includes liner notes by Ralph J. Gleason and Michael Cuscuna.
Reissue producer: Michael Cuscuna.

Andy Williams Dear Heart/The Shadow of Your Smile CD (1999)
Golden Girl: Columbia Recordings 1944-1966 album for sale Also available as part of the Collectables box THE LEGEND AT HIS BEST!.
DEAR HEART orignally released on Columbia (9138). THE SHADOW OF YOUR SMILE originally released on Columbia (9299). Includes liner notes by Mark Marymont.
This double-CD shows off Andy Williams as a brilliantly versatile performer. His ability to handle music of varying styles is one reason why he has endeared himself to millions for decades. Whether it's a masterpiece from Tin Pan Alley, a country serenade, or a Beatles tune, he forges an emotive drama from the raw material.
With a voice that's mellow and tender, he takes the old favorite, "That Old Feeling," and fairly turns the song into an aria with his broad, prolonged notes. He gets right to the point with "You're Nobody 'Til Somebody Loves You," gracing the melody with his effortless bravado. A tropic samba suits Williams as he buffers his belting for a soft and sultry rendition of "How Insensitive." He puts his touch on the Beatles' hit "Yesterday" and, as is his knack, gets to the emotional core of the oft-covered song.
2 LPs on 1 CD: DEAR HEART(1965)/THE SHADOW OF YOUR SMILE(1966).

Andy Williams Call Me Irresponsible/My Fair Lady CD (1999)
Golden Girl: Columbia Recordings 1944-1966 CD music In 1964, Andy Williams released two albums, one devoted to movie theme songs, the other to Broadway show tunes; they are combined on this CD reissue. Since becoming associated with the Henry Mancini-Johnny Mercer song "Moon River" and releasing an earlier film song album, Moon River & Other Great Movie Themes in 1962, Williams had become the undisputed king of such material, his reign extended by the success of his 1963 album Days of Wine and Roses, keyed to another Mancini-Mercer song. Call Me Irresponsible took its name from 1964's Academy Award-winning song from the film Papa's Delicate Condition, written by Sammy Cahn and James Van Heusen, and Williams also covered two of the year's other nominees, Mancini and Mercer's "Charade" and "More" from Mondo Cane. The rest of the album ranged back to the 1940s ("Laura") and up to the just-released film The Chalk Garden ("Madrigal"). The songs were ballads, sung warmly by Williams with sympathetic string arrangements. My Fair Lady was another story. Conceived to accompany the release of the film version of the long-running stage musical, it was given over half to songs from that show and half to other show tunes, including then-current hits such as "Hello, Dolly" and "People" from Funny Girl. But the overly busy arrangements often competed with the singer and the songs, distracting attention from both. Inappropriate at the time, they sound terribly dated 35 years later. Though both albums were released in succession in 1964, Collectables Records might better have chosen to pair Call Me Irresponsible with Moon River for a complete movie song compilation. As it is, the CD contains one excellent album and one mediocre one. ~ William Ruhlmann
