Matmos Civil War CD (2003)
Indigo Girls/Strange Fire/Nomads Indians Saints buy CD music Ever-searching electronica experimentalists Matmos change their game yet again on THE CIVIL WAR. Renaissance folk, contemporary classical, Irish jigs, and a variety of other stylistic elements are mixed into Matmos's rapid-fire collages, with a blanket of martial drums and sonic warfare echoing the album's title. While its usual noise-guerilla ethos is in full effect, there is an undeniable artistry to the group's dense sound painting, cluttered as they are with microbeats, off-kilter melodies, and sonic detail. THE CIVIL WAR reinforces Matmos's status as one of the most consistently challenging and brilliant groups in the IDM genre.
The second Matador album from San Francisco duo Matmos, The Civil War represents a bit of a departure - beats meet folk/bluegrass, closely miked acoustic instruments and honky-tonk mixed with highly unorthodox samples such as a rabbit pelt, or the pounding of blood in M.C. Schmidt's carotid artery. The album features contributions from Kevin Blectum, David Grubbs and more. Digipak. 2003.
Additional personnel includes: Jay Lesser (dobro); Mark Lightcap (tuba); Ned Howey (bassoon).
Personnel: Martin C. Schmidt (acoustic guitar, dobro, hurdy-gurdy, recorder, piano, synthesizer, bass guitar, glass, percussion, chimes, sound effects); Mark Lightcap (electric guitar, banjo, trumpet, tuba); Drew Daniel (electric guitar, autoharp, sampler, sound effects); Jim Putnam (electric guitar); Keenan Lawler (National guitar, pipe); Jay Lesser (dobro); Blevin Blectum (violin); Matt Thrasher (melodica); David Grubbs (piano); Keith Fullerton Whitman (synthesizer); Steve Goodfriend (drums); Andrew Price (sound effects).

Black Cat Music October, November CD (2004)
Indigo Girls/Strange Fire/Nomads Indians Saints CD music Black Cat Music's 2001 Lookout debut, Hands in the Estuary, Torso in the Lake, wasn't really ahead of its time -- it sounded like too many things to be too much of that. But it was ahead of the nervy curve cresting in 2004, when types like Ex Models and Von Bondies are successfully putting the arch rhythms of '70s post-punk and the fashionable mess that came after it to work once again. That means Black Cat Music has a built-in back story for its sophomore effort, October, November, and its addicting wet chrome gleam. The record? It's a power stroke of slutty charm. Vocalist Brady (come on, enough with the first names already!) sings in a warbling, vaguely in key monotone from a place behind his tongue; he could sound like Britt Daniel (and does on "Kiss Until Kissed"), but it's usually just that generalized cool frontman detachment that comes to mind. His lyricisms are disjointed, too, but they make a kind of sense, like when you discover in the dank booth of an after-hours diner that you're actually fluent in Dutch. Rank guitars cut and rattle through opener "The Bridal Veil" and "Suicide Party," coalescing into satisfying melodies with seemingly very little effort. "Hearts of Chrome" might be the bomb track here. Driven by an absolutely enormous blues riff rumble, the song brings post-punk artiness in through a side door, suggesting what might happen if the Immortal Lee County Killers moved to the hip part of the city. "Jet Trash" does kick off a mid-album flirtation with Strokes-like dynamics, complete with a vocal filter and double-tracked guitars; "Thirteen Foot Waves" continues it. But the dourness and relative misdirection of those tracks (relative, since "Trash" also briefly flirts with one of October, November's most gorgeous chorus melodies) are forgiven in full by the rejiggered new wave black triangle strut of "Suicide Party" and "French Exit"'s manic '70s rock buzz. Dig the full-on electric guitar solo; match it with the bluesy punk ghosts lingering in Black Cat Music's margins -- and the "Superfly" bassline of "In the Lights" -- to hear a band that would rather entertain than make arty statements catered to backwards-speak elitists. ~ Johnny Loftus

Cameo Classic Cameo CD (2003)
Indigo Girls/Strange Fire/Nomads Indians Saints songs This compilation presents many of the biggest hits by the funk ensemble Cameo, along with lesser-known tracks such as "Sparkle" and "Freaky Dancin'."
Distributed in Europe, Classic Cameo is much like the U.S.-released Definitive Collection, since it relies far too much on Cameo's mid-'80s material to be considered definitive or even representative. Those who only know -- and only care about -- the era of the group that spawned electro-funk hits like "Word Up!," "Single Life," "She's Strange," and "Candy" will be left satisfied, but the disc does a great disservice to the catalog of one of funk's greatest and most prolific groups. Going by the presentation here, a newcomer would be led to believe that the biggest hits are at the beginning of the disc because they are the only noteworthy songs made by the group, and that the remainder is present only to fill out the disc. That's very wrong. Seek 2005's Gold for a much more accurate and justifiably extensive look. ~ Andy Kellman
European only 16-track collection on Universal.

Codgers Roar CD (2004)
Indigo Girls/Strange Fire/Nomads Indians Saints buy CD music HOIST THE JOLLY CODGER
Top anthemic alternative punk rock band THE CODGERS have now released their incredible E.
P " Roar" through Matchbox Recordings. The kick ass E.
P Features the powerful sing- a -long single " What You Talking About" and their own incredible football rock anthem " Hear us Roar". The Codgers are based in Germany ( Like label mates Groovycide ) but have 1 English member.
Codger History
The Codgers evolved in April 2002 by accident. The bass player, Stephan Frenken had no band at the time , one could ask one's self: "why?", so Carl Garratt and Thomas Hasenau (who have big hearts ) formed the band with him. Their next problem was that they had no Dave Grohl because he's too expensive, but they found Dirk Godenrath. The band was almost complete, but something was missing! Then Stephan pulled Kalle Kamlage into the Codgers boat. Bingo! This group of musicians got together for a one off gig at "Chez Heinz", which is a popular Club in Hannover for the "Dead Pop Star Festival". They proudly played the part of the Sex Pistols due to the sad death of Sid Vicious (Bless his soul!). The amazing thing was that they had never played together until they met on stage, due to the fact that Kalle lives about 70 miles away . The gig was just 20 minutes long, and the audience went wild. After which, the organizer approached us and said: "You guys kick ass, f**k Rock, f**k Pop, you guys have gotta play PUNK!" So we did, and The Codgers were born.
The Codgers are not merely a punk band but an anthemic alternative rock band with substance and massive stadium size tunes that get you singing in the aisles. They are set to take Internet Radio by storm

Woodpecker Street Bold New City CD (2006)
Indigo Girls/Strange Fire/Nomads Indians Saints songs Life in Jackson is a major theme of this second Woodpecker Street release by Steve Smith of the Assemblers, sometimes refracted through other notable views of the world like the Merode Altarpiece by Robert Campin ("House Assembles"), The Black Prince by Iris Murdoch ("My Dark Master"), and the Enneads of Plotinus ("Lose the Thread"). The style ranges from bopping guitar pop ("Bold New City Pipes") to honking synth pop ("Lick My Lips") to moodier pieces ("Dreamtown") to progressive keyboard rock instrumental ("The Rhubarb Path") to a Gershwin-meets-Satie solo piano reverie ("Amsterdam Notebook"). Not only that, there's a neat picture inside of the back of the King Edward Hotel before its promised restoration.
The last track, a rudely taped improv, is named "Playing Doctor" for the DR-770 "Dr. Rhythm" featured in several tunes on this album, and the process of composing with it; but here the drum machine isn't the DR-770, it's the ancient TR-505.
